A Retrospective Study of the Effect of Spinopelvic Parameters on Fatty Infiltration in Paraspinal Muscles in Patients With Lumbar Spondylolisthesis

        Jia-Chen Yang,Jia-Yu Chen,Yin Ding,Yong-Jie Yin,Zhi-Ping Huang,Xiu-Hua Wu,Zu-Cheng Huang,Yi-Kai Li,Qing-An Zhu 대한척추신경외과학회 2024 Neurospine Vol.21 No.1

Objective: The effect on fat infiltration (FI) of paraspinal muscles in degenerative lumbar spinal diseases has been demonstrated except for spinopelvic parameters. The present study is to identify the effect of spinopelvic parameters on FI of paraspinal muscle (PSM) and psoas major muscle (PMM) in patients with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis. Methods: A single-center, retrospective cross-sectional study of 160 patients with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) and lumbar stenosis (LSS) who had lateral full-spine x-ray and lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging was conducted. PSM and PMM FIs were defined as the ratio of fat to its muscle cross-sectional area. The FIs were compared among patients with different pelvic tilt (PT) and pelvic incidence (PI), respectively. Results: The PSM FI correlated significantly with pelvic parameters in DLS patients, but not in LSS patients. The PSM FI in pelvic retroversion (PT > 25°) was 0.54 ± 0.13, which was significantly higher in DLS patients than in normal pelvis (0.41 ± 0.14) and pelvic anteversion (PT < 5°) (0.34 ± 0.12). The PSM FI of DLS patients with large PI ( > 60°) was 0.50 ± 0.13, which was higher than those with small ( < 45°) and normal PI (0.37 ± 0.11 and 0.36 ± 0.13). However, the PSM FI of LSS patients didn’t change significantly with PT or PI. Moreover, the PMM FI was about 0.10–0.15, which was significantly lower than the PSM FI, and changed with PT and PI in a similar way of PSM FI with much less in magnitude. Conclusion: FI of the PSMs increased with greater pelvic retroversion or larger pelvic incidence in DLS patients, but not in LSS patients.

Screening, Gene Cloning, and Characterizations of an Acid-Stable α-Amylase

Liu, Xinyu,Jia, Wei,An, Yi,Cheng, Kun,Wang, Mingdao,Yang, Sen,Chen, Hongge The Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnol 2015 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.25 No.6

Based on its α-amylase activity at pH 5.0 and optimal pH of the crude enzyme, a strain (named B-5) with acid α-amylase production was screened. The B-5 strain was identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens through morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics analysis, as well as 16S rDNA phylogenetic analysis. Its α-amylase gene of GenBank Accession No. GU318401 was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The purified recombinant α-amylase AMY-Ba showed the optimal pH of 5.0, and was stable at a pH range of 4.0-6.0. When hydrolyzing soluble starch, amylose, and amylopectin, AMY-Ba released glucose and maltose as major end products. The α-amylase AMY-Ba in this work was different from the well-investigated J01542-type α-amylase which also came from B. amyloliquefaciens. AMY-Ba exhibited notable adsorption and hydrolysis ability towards various raw starches. Structure analysis of AMY-Ba suggested the presence of a new starch-binding domain at its C-terminal region.

A comparative study on population development patterns of Sogatella furcifera between tropical and subtropical areas

        Yang Hu,Jia-An CHENG,Zengrong Zhu,Kong Luen Heong,Qiang Fu,Jiachun He 한국응용곤충학회 2014 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.17 No.4

The White-backed Planthopper (WBPH), Sogatella furcifera (Horváth (Hemiptera: Delphacidae)) has been the most serious pest threatening rice production in Asia since the late 1970s. A series of field experiments using the same research protocol was carried out to compare the effects of main environmental factors on population development of WBPH in tropical (Philippines) and subtropical (China) areas in 2010–2012 and to provide further evidences of ecological mechanisms involved that cause frequent outbreak in subtropical rice. Outcomes showed that WBPH population in subtropical area could be characterized as the higher population growth rates and higher peak densities. The average growth rate (116.60 ± 46.16) in subtropical area was significantly higher than that in tropical area (24.02± 11.25). The higher realized fecundity in subtropical area indicated that the higher growth rates and higher peak densities were mainly related to the poor natural regulating forces in subtropical area. Our results showed that resistant variety could significantly reduce the peak density in subtropical areas, but not in tropical areas. We inferred that the reason for not detecting the effect of resistant variety in tropical area was due to the dominant controlling effects provided by natural enemies, which means that the natural regulating effect in tropical areawas strong enough to disguise the effects of resistant variety. The significant interactions between plant resistance and location demonstrated that integration of natural enemies and use of plant resistance could play important roles for reducing outbreak frequency of WBPH effectively in subtropical rice.

      • Mobile sand barriers for windblown sand mitigation: Effects of plane layout and included angle

        Li Gao,Jian-jun Cheng,Bo-song Ding,Jia Lei,Yuan-feng An,Ben-teng Ma 한국풍공학회 2022 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.34 No.3

Mobile sand barriers are a new type sand-retaining structure that can be moved and arranged according to the engineering demands of sand control. When only used for sand trapping, mobile sand barriers could be arranged in single row. For the dual purposes of sand trapping and sand stabilization, four rows of mobile sand barriers can be arranged in a staggered form. To reveal the effect of plane layout, the included angle between sand barrier direction and wind direction on the characteristics of flow fields and the sand control laws of mobile sand barriers, numerical computations and wind tunnel tests were conducted. The results showed that inflows deflected after passing through staggered arrangement sand barriers due to changes in included angle, and the sand barrier combination exerted successive wind resistance and group blocking effects. An analysis of wind resistance efficiency revealed that the effective protection length of staggered arrangement sand barriers approximately ranged from the sand barrier to 10H on the leeward side (H is sand barrier height), and that the effective protection length of single row sand barriers roughly ranged from 1H on the windward side to 20H on the leeward side. The distribution of sand deposit indicated that the sand interception increased with increasing included angle in staggered arrangement. The wind-breaking and sand-trapping effects were optimal when included angle between sand barrier direction and wind direction is 60°-90°.

The utilization and industrialization of insect resources in China

        Chuan-Xi Zhang,Xu-Dong TANG,Jia-An CHENG 한국곤충학회 2008 Entomological Research Vol.38 No.-

Insecta is the biggest group of animals on earth. The insects are thought to be one of the biggest biological resources that have not been fully exploited by humans. China is one of the earliest countries to exploit insect resources in the world and has been the top producer for over one thousand years of many insect-related industrial products, such as silk, insect wax and Chinese gallnuts. The exploitation and industrialization of insect resources in China is generally classified into four different levels. The first level is the direct utilization of insect bodies and their secretions, the history of which can be traced back for thousands of years. This level includes the culture and utilization of the silkworm Bombyx mori, the Chinese honeybee Apis cerana cerana, the Chinese white-wax scale Ericerus pela, the Chinese gall aphid Schlechtendalia chinensis, and the lac insects Kerria spp. Additionally, numerous other insects are typically used for Chinese traditional medicines and food, such as Eupolyphaga sinensis, Opisthoplatia orientalis, Aspongopus chinensis, Martianus dermestoides, Polyrhachis vicina, Hepialus spp, Vespa, Hydrillodes repugnalis, and Tenebrio molitor. Pollinators (Megachile rotundata, Osmia cornifrons, O. excavata) and ornamental insects like butterflies, katydids Gampsocleis grafiosa, and fighting crickets Scapsipedes micado are also among the insects included in this level. Accordingly, a related industry is insect-breeding, including sericulture and apiculture, which lays the basis for all insect industrialization. The second level is the utilization of insects as enemies of pests and insect pathogens for biological control. The enemy insects, including the egg parasites tricogramma Trichogramma spp, the seven spotted lady beetle Coccinella septempunctata, the Chinese green lacewing Chrysopa sinica, and Anastatus sp. could be produced in large scale. The insect pathogens that have been extensively used for commercial biocontrol in China include Helicoverpa armigera Nucleopolyhedrovirus (HaSNPV), Ectropis oblique Nucleopolyhedrovirus (EcobNPV), Spodoptera exigua multicapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV), Autographa californica multicapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV), Plutella xylostella Granulosis (PxGV), Pieris rapae granulosis (PiraGV), and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Related industries include the biopesticide industry and the enemy insect production industry. The third level of utilization is the extraction and synthesis of insect materials with diverse bioactivities. Some insect pheromones and hormones extracted from insect bodies or chemically synthesized have been used for insect pest control and for regulating the silkworm breeding. Toxins from honeybees and wasps have been used in medicine. Some insect materials from the larvae of honeybees, silkworms, tasar silkworms, and houseflies have been developed into health products. The fourth level is using the insects as bioreactors to produce peptides for medical and veterinary uses. Hundreds of foreign genes have been successfully expressed in the insect cells and larvae. The hGM-CSF expressed in silkworm pupae is commercially available. In this article, we review the culture and utilization of important industrial insects in China.
