        NRBF2-mediated autophagy contributes to metabolite replenishment and radioresistance in glioblastoma

        Overcoming therapeutic resistance in glioblastoma (GBM) is an essential strategy for improving cancer therapy. However, cancer cells possess various evasion mechanisms, such as metabolic reprogramming, which promote cell survival and limit therapy. The diverse metabolic fuel sources that are produced by autophagy provide tumors with metabolic plasticity and are known to induce drug or radioresistance in GBM. This study determined that autophagy, a common representative cell homeostasis mechanism, was upregulated upon treatment of GBM cells with ionizing radiation (IR). Nuclear receptor binding factor 2 (NRBF2)—a positive regulator of the autophagy initiation step—was found to be upregulated in a GBM orthotopic xenograft mouse model. Furthermore, ATP production and the oxygen consumption rate (OCR) increased upon activation of NRBF2-mediated autophagy. It was also discovered that changes in metabolic state were induced by alterations in metabolite levels caused by autophagy, thereby causing radioresistance. In addition, we found that lidoflazine—a vasodilator agent discovered through drug repositioning—significantly suppressed IR-induced migration, invasion, and proliferation by inhibiting NRBF2, resulting in a reduction in autophagic flux in both in vitro models and in vivo orthotopic xenograft mouse models. In summary, we propose that the upregulation of NRBF2 levels reprograms the metabolic state of GBM cells by activating autophagy, thus establishing NRBF2 as a potential therapeutic target for regulating radioresistance of GBM during radiotherapy.

        Effects of selected herb extracts on iron-catalyzed lipid oxidation in soybean oil-in-water emulsion

        Effect of herb extracts on the oil oxidation of an oil-in-water emulsion containing iron was studied. The emulsion comprised tocopherol-stripped soybean oil (40 g), citrate buffer (60 g, pH 4.0), xanthan gum (35 mg), and $FeSO_4$ (0.5 mg) with 80% ethanol extracts of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), basil (Ocimum basilicum), peppermint (Mentha piperita), thyme (Thymus vulgaris), or oregano (Origanum vulgare). Hydroperoxide contents and p-anisidine values were significantly (p<0.05) lower in the emulsions with the added herb extracts compared with the control emulsions. The antioxidant activity of the basil and peppermint extracts containing higher proportions of rosmarinic acid was significantly higher (p<0.05) than that of the other herb extracts, but the polyphenol degradation rate was not significantly different. The antioxidant activity of the basil and peppermint extracts showed concentration-dependence within 400 mg/kg. This study suggests that the oxidative stability of oil-in-water emulsion containing iron can be improved by addition of basil or peppermint extract.

        Predicting Mortality in Patients with Tuberculous Destroyed Lung Receiving Mechanical Ventilation

        Background: Patients with acute respiratory failure secondary to tuberculous destroyed lung (TDL) have a poor prognosis. The aim of the present retrospective study was to develop a mortality prediction model for TDL patients who require mechanical ventilation. Methods: Data from consecutive TDL patients who had received mechanical ventilation at a single university-affiliated tertiary care hospital in Korea were reviewed. Binary logistic regression was used to identify factors predicting intensive care unit (ICU) mortality. A TDL on mechanical Ventilation (TDL-Vent) score was calculated by assigning points to variables according to ${\beta}$ coefficient values. Results: Data from 125 patients were reviewed. A total of 36 patients (29%) died during ICU admission. On the basis of multivariate analysis, the following factors were included in the TDL-Vent score: age ${\geq}65$ years, vasopressor use, and arterial partial pressure of oxygen/fraction of inspired oxygen ratio <180. In a second regression model, a modified score was then calculated by adding brain natriuretic peptide. For TDL-Vent scores 0 to 3, the 60-day mortality rates were 11%, 27%, 30%, and 77%, respectively (p<0.001). For modified TDL-Vent scores 0 to ${\geq}3$, the 60-day mortality rates were 0%, 21%, 33%, and 57%, respectively (p=0.001). For both the TDL-Vent score and the modified TDL-Vent score, the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve were larger than that of other illness severity scores. Conclusion: The TDL-Vent model identifies TDL patients on mechanical ventilation with a high risk of mortality. Prospective validation studies in larger cohorts are now warranted.

        건조 다래순의 조리 중 라디칼 소거 활성과 알파글루코시데이스 억제 활성의 변화

        다래순 묵나물을 찬물에 16시간 불리고, 30분 삶은 후 1시간 찬물에 불리는 재수화 과정을 거친 후 다래순의 라디칼 소거 활성과 알파글루코시데이스 억제활성은 유의하게 감소하였으며 재수화된 다래순을 180℃에서 10분 또는 20분 동안 가열 조리한 경우 들기름 첨가와 관계없이 라디칼 소거활성은 증가하였으나 알파글루코시데이스 억제 활성은 들기름을 첨가하고 가열 조리한 경우에만 증가하였다. 다래순의 라디칼 소거 활성과 알파글루코시데이스 억제 활성 변화는 색소보다는 산화방지제, 플라보노이드 또는 토코페롤보다는 폴리페놀 화합물 함량 변화와 더 유사한 경향을 보였다. 따라서 본 결과는 다래순 묵나물의 재수화 또는 가열 조리 시 산화 방지, 항당뇨 등 건강기능성 개선을 위해 폴리페놀 화합물의 손실을 줄이는 것이 바람직함을 시사하였다. This study evaluated the in vitro radical scavenging and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of dried daraesoon (shoot of hardy kiwi) during cooking involving rehydration and subsequent heating at 180℃ with or without perilla oil. Pigments and antioxidants were quantified by HPLC and spectrophotometry. Unlike the tocopherol content, the polyphenol, flavonoid, chlorophyll, and carotenoid contents as well as the DPPH radical scavenging and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of daraesoon extract were significantly decreased by rehydration (p<0.05). Heating the rehydrated daraesoon for 10 or 20 min increased its radical scavenging activity irrespective of perilla oil addition, whereas the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity increased significantly only after heating with perilla oil (p<0.05). During cooking, changes in both activities showed a similar pattern to that showed by polyphenol content changes. These results suggest that the health functionality of daraesoon can be enhanced by an appropriate cooking process that retains polyphenols.

        Quality Improvement Specialists’ Experiences of Implementing an Assessment of Patients’ Experiences in South Korea

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to explain the patient assessment experiences of the medical staff responsible for customer satisfaction and quality improvement at their respective medical institutions. Methods: This was a qualitative study using a focus group with quality improvement or custom service department managers. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted with seventeen participants divided into three focus group interviews from July 3 to 5, 2017. Each interview took an average of 1 hour and 40 minutes. Transcribed data were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. Results: Base on the analysis, four categories and eight themes were derived. The categories were: 1) what is the quality of hospital service? 2) between directionality and timeliness, 3) variations in recognition and application, and 4) changing in hospital culture Conclusion: The assessment of patient"s experience has spread a patient-centered culture and elicited significant changes in the behavior of medical and hospital staff. However, the survey instruments and procedures for assessing patient experiences need to be continuously improved, and additional research is required to secure evidence related to patient experiences.

        예비 초등교사들의 수학학습양식 및 유형 분석

        학습자의 수학학습양식과 유형을 알면 학습자에게 적절한 학습 자료와 학습 방법을 제공할 수 있다. 그러므로 학습자의 학습양식과 유형을 파악하는 것은 교육적 효과를 높이기 위해 필요하다. 본 연구는 서울, 경기와 인천, 청주, 광주 지역의 예비 초등교사 523명을 대상으로 설문조사를 하고, 그 중 457명의 자료를 분석하여 예비 초등교사들의 수학학습양식과 학습유형을 확인하였다. 또한 242명에 대해서는 고등학교 계열에 따른 수학학습양식 및 유형을 비교하였고, 초, 중, 고등학생의 학습양식에 관한 선행연구와 결합하여 초·중·고등학생 및 예비 초등교사들의 수학학습양식과 학습유형의 변화 추이를 살펴보았다. 자료 분석에는 SPSS 25.0을 이용하였으며, 빈도분 석과 교차분석 및 평균에 대한 t검정을 실시하였다. 본 연구에서는 수학학습양식을 기존의 이분법적 구분이 아니라 삼분법적으로 구분하여 설문 응답자에게 보다 상세한 정보를 제공하도록 하였다. Knowing the learners mathematics learning style and type can provide learners with appropriate learning materials and learning methods. Therefore, it is necessary to grasp the learning style and type of the learner to enhance the educational effect. This study surveyed 523 preliminary elementary teachers in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Cheongju and Gwangju and analyzed the data of 457 of them. In addition, 242 students were compared with mathematical learning styles and types according to the high school series, and combined with previous studies on learning styles of elementary, middle, and high school students, mathematics learning styles and learning styles of elementary, middle and high school students and pre- I examined the change trend. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0, frequency analysis, crossover analysis and t test for mean. In this study, the mathematical learning style was divided into three parts, not the existing dichotomy, to provide more detailed information to the respondents.

        삼각형의 세 내각의 크기의 합과 관련 교과서 분석 및 지도방안 연구

        삼각형의 내각의 크기의 합을 지도할 때, 내각의 크기의 합이 얼마인가 하는 문제 보다는 내각의 크기의 합을 구해보려고 하는 생각이 더 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 이연구는 삼각형의 내각의 크기의 합을 구해보려는 생각 또는 삼각형의 세 내각의 크기의 합이 일정하다는 생각을 초등학생 스스로 할 수 있게 하는 방법을 찾아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 초등학교 삼각형의 내각의 합에 관련된 우리나라의 수학 교과서를 분석하였고, 클레로의 아이디어를 적용한 수업을 실시하여 그 결과를 분석하였다. When students are taught the sum of triangle s internal angles, it is more important that they intend to sum the three of internal angles in triangle before how big the sum of three of internal angles of the triangle. In this study, Clairaut s ideas were applied and the results were analyzed in order to find a way to make students think that the sum of the sizes of the triangle s internal angles or the sum of the sizes of the three angles of the triangle is constant. For this purpose, we analyzed the Korean mathematics textbooks related to the sum of triangle s internal angles of elementary school triangles.
