<P>Kahweol, a diterpene molecule, has antiproliferative effects on several types of human cancer cells, but whether it has apoptotic effect in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is not known. To explore this possibility, we incubated cells from two NSCLC cell lines, NCI-H358 and NCI-H1299, with different concentrations of kahweol and used the MTS assay, DAPI staining, propidium iodide staining, Annexin V staining, immunocytochemical test, and western blot analysis to characterize this molecule and the signaling pathway underlying its effects. The kahweol-treated cells showed significantly decreased cell viability, increased nuclear condensation, and an increased number of Annexin V-positive NSCLC cells. Suppression of basic transcription factor 3 (BTF3) was followed by apoptosis induced by kahweol via the ERK-mediated signaling pathway in a dose- and time-dependent manner. In addition, kahweol modulated the protein expression of BTF3 genes involved in cell-cycle regulation and apoptosis-related proteins, resulting in apoptotic cell death. Our results collectively indicated that kahweol inhibited the proliferation of NSCLC cells through ERK-mediated signaling pathways and the downregulation of BTF3.</P>

To study the control of postharvest decay caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Penicillium expansum, gamma irradiation alone or in combination with fumigation was evaluated to extend the shelf life of apples in South Korea. An irradiation dose of 2.0 kGy resulted in the maximum inhibition of C. gloeosporioides and P. expansum spore germination. The gamma irradiation dose required to reduce the spore germination by 90% was 0.22 and 0.35 kGy for C. gloeosporioides and P. expansum, respectively. Microscopic observations revealed that when the fungal spores were treated with gamma irradiation (4.0 kGy), conidial germination was stopped completely resulting in no germ tube formation in C. gloeosporioides. Treatment with the eco-friendly fumigant ethanedinitrile had a greater antifungal activity against C. gloeosporioides and P. expansum in comparison with the non-treated control under in vitro conditions. The in vitro antifungal effects of the gamma irradiation and fumigation treatments allowed us to further study the effects of the combined treatments to control postharvest decay on stored apples. Interestingly, when apples were treated with gamma irradiation in combined with fumigation, disease inhibition increased more at lower (< 0.4 kGy) than at higher doses of irradiation, suggesting that combined treatments reduced the necessary irradiation dose in phytosanitary irradiation processing under storage conditions.

This study was conducted to investigate health management and health awareness of industrial workers and use the information for the development of health education program and the guidline of health management for industrial workers. The survey was carried out on 1,200 workers who were selected from Incheon, Ulsan, Pohang. Masan, Changwon city from Oct. 2 to Oct. 31. 1995. The main results are summarized as follows. 1. With regard to health behavior after regular physical examination, 48.3% of subjects answered "consulting with medical doctors or health workers" and 7.9% answered "non action anything". 2. As for need of environmental control of work, of the total subjects, 96.1% answered "need". 3. As for participation of health education, 61.2% of the subjects were positive, which was higher in male, in higher age groups, in middle school graduates, in healthy group by self assessment than other groups respectively. 4. As for knowledge level of the disease, the average score was 4.97±1.41 point to 7 point full mark (71 point to 100 point full mark), the score level was higher in male higher economic, in office workers, in higher education groups, in working period longer groups, in healthier groups, in higher age groups than other groups respectively. 5. As for attitude level of the disease, the average score was 4.70±1.25 point to 7 point full mark (67.1 point to 100 point full mark), which was lower, in higher age group, in longer education level, in healthier groups in longer working period than other groups respectively, while the score was higher in male, in day-time workers, in urban residence than other groups respectively.

<B>ABSTRACT</B><P>To extend the shelf life of apples in South Korea, we evaluated the effect of gamma irradiation alone or gamma irradiation combined with fumigation on the control of postharvest decay caused by Botrytis cinerea and Monilinia fructigena. An irradiation dose of 1.0 kGy caused the maximal inhibition of B. cinerea and M. fructigena spore germination. The gamma irradiation dose required to reduce the spore germination by 90% was 0.76 and 0.78 kGy for B. cinerea and M. fructigena, respectively. Inhibition of conidial germination of both fungal pathogens occurred at a greater level at the doses of 0.2 to 1.0 kGy compared with the nontreated control; 0.2 kGy caused 90.5 and 73.9% inhibition of B. cinerea and M. fructigena, respectively. Treatment in vitro with the ecofriendly fumigant ethanedinitrile had a greater effect compared with the nontreated control. The in vitro antifungal effects of the gamma irradiation and fumigation treatments allowed us to further study the effects of the combined treatments. Interestingly, when irradiation was combined with fumigation, the percentage of disease inhibition increased more at lower (<0.4 kGy) than at higher doses of irradiation, suggesting that the combined treatments reduced the necessary irradiation dose in phytosanitary irradiation processing under storage conditions.</P>

This study aims to research toxic parents` rearing attitudes and the effects on their children personality development. For this purpose first, preceding research of parents` rearing attitudes and their children personality development were presented. And then 6 types of toxic parents suggested by Susan Forward and the effects on children personality development were explained. The toxic parents` children have similiar life style and personality. Most of them can`t feel their self-esteem and often have self-destrictive personality. Sometimes they have a problem to find their self-value, to give and take love eachother, and perceive that they are not enough. Although they were reared by toxic parents, they have many ways of getting out of guilty and self-distrust from parents. Finally, desirable rearing attitude were introduced that included realizing dysfunctional family dynamic, giving hope and courage of life, and providing unconditional love to children.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Experiments on high pressure steam condensation inside a nearly horizontal tube were performed for application into Passive Auxiliary Feedwater System (PAFS) of Advanced Power Reactor Plus (APR+). At KAIST, a Single-tube COndensation experiment facility of PAFS (SCOP) was constructed. The one-through type open loop test, where steam circulation is driven by pressure difference between the steam generator and the venting valve, was conducted in order to compensate for insufficiency of the heater power. We found out that the open loop test produced the same condensation heat transfer coefficients as those of the closed loop within 1% difference. Using the open loop, we were able to generate the higher steam flow rate by three times than that done by the heater power. Sensitivity studies were performed to validate the heat transfer performance of the PAFS in regard to the pressure effect, the diameter effect and the angle effect. The operating range of experiments are 1–7MPa (pressure), 50.4mm (reference tube) and 33.4mm (comparing tube) (tube outer diameter) and 2–4° (tube angle). The comparing tube gave 30% higher heat transfer coefficients over the reference tube. In our tests, the slug flow was not observed. Compared with the reference case with the inclined angle of 3°, the case with the inclined angle of 2° showed just a bit lower heat capacity without any transition into slug flow.</P>

Recently, many buildings are constructed around marine environment because of the excellent landscape and the good view. therefore, it is increased the damage as a chloride from the sea. For this reason, many researches of chloride ion penetration have been conducted. but there is no study about the effect of aggregate. In this study, the effect on chloride ion diffusion coefficient and the durability of concrete was investigated along with the change of the grading. From the results, the effect of aggregate on chloride ion diffusion coefficient and the durability of concrete is too little to evaluate it. and diffusion coefficient for steady state was evaluated as low as 1/10 of that for non-steady state. The future direction of this study will be one that estimate the effect of aggregate on chloride diffusion coefficient under low W/C.

Biogenic amines have been used as chemical indicators of fermented foods. So far, several chromatography methods have been developed to detect biogenic amines in foods. However, few methods have identified these compound in domestic cheese. We analyzed the biogenic amines (histamine dihydrochloride, tyramine hydrochloride, β-phenylethylamine hydrochloride, putrescine dihydrochloride, cadaverine, spermidine, tryptamine hydrochloride, ethanolamine hydrochloride and butylamine) in cheese by using HPLC. The calibration curves of the biogenic amines were found to be linear over the concentration range of 10-50 ppm with a correlation coefficient of above 0.99. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of the biogenic amines in the given order were 3.7 and 11.3 ppm, 3.4 and 10.4ppm, 3.4 and 10.3 ppm, 4.0 and 12.2 ppm, 3.4 and 10.4 ppm, 3.4 and 10.5 ppm, 3.5 and 10.7 ppm, 4.1 and 12.5 ppm, and 3.4 and 10.4 ppm, respectively. Recovery rates of the biogenic amines in the given order were 112, 104, 93, 108, 91, 102, 101, and 92%, respectively. The findings of this study suggest that HPLC is a suitable method for the determination of biogenic amines, thereby indicating its potential application in the quality control of aging cheese.
