      • Initial Public Offerings, Earnings Management and Venture Capital : Evidence of Bull and Bear Market Conditions in Korea

        Jaemin Cho,Jaeho Lee 한국재무학회 2012 한국재무학회 학술대회 Vol.2012 No.08

Earnings management at the time of the IPO is an important issue and has captured considerable attention of academic literatures. However, there have been few studies testing earnings management in the context of market condition, and when financial intermediaries such as venture capital (VC) involve in the IPO process. This study investigates how VCs influence on earnings management of IPOs upon market condition. We find evidence that if IPO firms go public in the bear market periods, VCs are more likely to inflate their earnings more aggressively at the IPO, compared to the bull market periods. Specifically, while most of studies have argued that VCs have certification effect and monitoring effect to discourage earnings management, we argue that, with empirical finding in Korea, VCs have incentives to inflate their IPOs’ earnings for harvesting high returns in the IPO year and the inflated earnings are more deepened in bear market periods.

Protective Effect of Boiled and Freeze-dried Mature Silkworm Larval Powder Against Diethylnitrosamine-induced Hepatotoxicity in Mice

        Jae-Min Cho,Kee Young Kim,Sang Deok Ji,김은희 대한암예방학회 2016 Journal of cancer prevention Vol.21 No.3

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a representative inflammation-associated cancer and known to be the most frequent tumors. HCC may also induce important pro- and anti-tumor immune reactions. However, the underlying mechanisms are unsatisfactorily identified. We investigated the protective effect of boiled and freeze-dried mature silkworm larval powder (BMSP) on diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced hepatotoxicity in mice. Methods: Mice were fed with diet containing BMSP (0.1, 1, and 10 g/kg) for two weeks and DEN (100 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) was injected 18 hours before the end of this experiment. Liver toxicity was determined in serum and histopathological examination was assessed in the liver tissues. Infiltration of immune cells and expressions of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines were also examined. Results: Pretreatment with BMSP reduced necrotic and histopathological changes induced by DEN in the liver. Measurement of serum biochemical indicators, the levels of alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase, showed that pretreatment with BMSP also decreased DEN-induced hepatotoxicity. In addition, BMSP inhibited the macrophage and CD31 infiltration in a dose-dependent manner. The expressions of interleukin-1β, IFN-γ and chemokines for T cell activation were decreased in BMSP pretreatment groups. Conclusions: BMSP may have a protective effect against acute liver injury by inhibiting necrosis and inflammatory response in DEN-treated mice.

Multifunctional Green Solvent for Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

        Jaemin Cho,Beomsoo Kim,Seokjoo Ryu,Alan Jiwan Yun,Bumjin Gil,Jiheon Lim,Jihyun Kim,Jinhyun Kim,Byungwoo Park 대한금속·재료학회 2023 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.19 No.5

Organometal trihalide perovskite has recently been considered as one of the leading candidates to achieve highly effi cient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, current PSC procedures commonly rely on the large volume of highly toxic halogenated or highly fl ammable solvents which are not favorable for the large-scale commercialization of PSCs. Herein, we employ nontoxic and nonhalogenated salicylaldehyde from the buckwheat as a both nonpolar (antisolvent) and polar (posttreatmentdissolving) solvent for the multifunctional purpose. Salicylaldehyde has a semipolar characteristic due to the hydroxyl group (–OH) attached to the benzene ring, enabling it to utilize both polar and nonpolar solvents in the PSCs fabrications. As a result, the PSC using green solvent achieved a power conversion effi ciency (PCE) up to 20.23%. Encapsulated devices retained over 80% of their initial PCE, after ~ 750 h of constant 1-sun illumination, and after ~ 1100 h under 60 °C heat. Overall, this work demonstrates that salicylaldehyde can be an alternative solvent for green and effi cient fabrication in the PSC.

Protective Effect of Silkworm (Bombyx mori) Powder against Diethylnitrosamine-induced Hepatotoxicity in Mice

        ( Jae-min Cho ),( Kyung-sook Hong ),( Da-young Lee ),( Kee-young Kim ),( Sang-deok Ji ),( Eun-hee Kim ) 한국산업식품공학회 2016 산업 식품공학 Vol.20 No.4

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a representative inflammation-associated cancer and known to be the most fre-quent tumor. However, the preventive agents for hepatocarcinogenesis are unsatisfactorily identified. We investigated the protective effect of steamed and freeze-dried mature silkworm larval powder (SMSP) on diethylnitrosamine (DEN)-induced hepatotoxicity in mice and compared the effect of three silkworm varieties: white-jade, golden-silk, and light-green strains. The mice were fed with diet containing 0.1, 1, and 10 g/㎏ of three types of SMSP for two weeks while DEN (100 ㎎/kg, i.p.) was injected 18 h before the end of this experiment. Liver toxicity was deter-mined as serum indicator, histopathological examination, and expression of inflammatory enzyme. Pretreatment with SMSP reduced necrotic and histopathological changes induced by DEN in the liver. The measurement of serum bio-chemical indicators showed that pretreatment with SMSP also decreased DEN-induced hepatotoxicity, the levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). In addition, SMSP inhibited the expressions of inflammatory enzymes, cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase. White-jade SMSP showed the most effective hepatoprotective results against hepatotoxicity among the three silk-worm strains used in this study. SMSP may have a protective effect against acute liver injury by inhibiting necrosis and inflammatory response in DEN-treated mice.

      • Optimal Pulse Sequence for Ferumoxides-Enhanced MR Imaging Used in the Detection of Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Comparative Study Using Seven Pulse Sequences

        SeungHoonKim,DongilChoi,JaeHoonLim,WonJaeLee,Hyun-JungJang,HyoKeunLim,SoonJinLee,JaeMinCho,SeungKwonKim,GabChulKim 대한영상의학회 2002 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.3 No.2

Objective: To identify the optimal pulse sequence for ferumoxides-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in the detection of hepatocelluar carcinomas (HCCs). Materials and Methods: Sixteen patients with 25 HCCs underwent MR imaging following intravenous infusion of ferumoxides. All MR studies were performed on a 1.5-T MR system, using a phased-array coil. Ferumoxides (Feridex IV) at a dose of 15 mol/Kg was slowly infused intravenously, and axial images of seven sequences were obtained 30 minutes after the end of infusion. The MR protocol included fast spin-echo (FSE) with two echo times (TR3333 8571/TE18 and 90-117), singleshot FSE (SSFSE) with two echo times (TR /TE39 and 98), T2*-weighted gradient-recalled acquisition in the steady state (GRASS) (TR216/TE20), T2*-weighted fast multiplanar GRASS (FMPGR) (TR130/TE8.4 9.5), and T2*-weighted fast multiplanar spoiled GRASS (FMPSPGR) (TR130/TE8.4 9.5). Contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRs) of HCCs determined during the imaging sequences formed the basis of quantitative analysis, and images were qualitatively assessed in terms of lesion conspicuity and image artifacts. The diagnostic accuracy of all sequences was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: Quantitative analysis revealed that the CNRs of T2*-weighted FMPGR and T2*-weighted FMPSPGR were significantly higher than those of the other sequences, while qualitative analysis showed that image artifacts were prominent at T2*-weighted GRASS imaging. Lesion conspicuity was statistically significantly less clear at SSFSE imaging. In term of lesion detection, T2*-weighted FMPGR, T2*- weighted FMPSPGR, and proton density FSE imaging were statistically superior to the others. Conclusion: T2*-weighted FMPGR, T2*- weighted FMPSPGR, and proton density FSE appear to be the optimal pulse sequences for ferumoxidesenhanced MR imaging in the detection of HCCs.
