        The purpose of this study is to analyze the actual state and to suggest the way of improving English grammar instruction. The recent movement toward communicative teaching has brought a decrease in explicit grammar instruction in language teaching. However, grammar teaching helps learners to develop explicit knowledge and learners in EFL setting should be given grammar instruction to compensate the lack of exposed time in target language. Also, grammar should be taught as a useful tool for language acquisition, not as a goal in itself. Thus, it is suggested that grammar instruction has some positive effects on second language acquisition and that learners should learn explicit knowledge and make practical application of it in target language in order to improve communicative competence.

      • Application of ICT-based Dual Infrared Sensors for efficient honey bee monitoring

        Honey bees are affected by a variety of factors, so they have to be thoroughly managed according to their lifestyle. The activity of the honey bee foragers represent an important parameter of the hive state. Here, the real-time and automatic monitoring system using dual infrared sensors was applied for counting the foraging activity of honey bees based on ICT. According to this study, this system is very accurate with a relative error of 3.98% / 4.43% compared to manual counting through video analysis. This system showed the scalability of the system through the internal and external temperature sensors connected through the main board and BLE module. Furthermore, the data measured through this system for one month were analyzed, the monthly average foraging activity and the number of lost foragers were measured (1.88% of outgoing bees), and at the same time, the foraging patterns according to the changes of temperature and time were analyzed. This study suggests that the development of apicultural, scientific and educational materials with more powerful real-time monitoring tools through expansion of a complex monitoring system and big data accumulation.

      • Study on creation of ecological environment aiming for biodiversity and insect phases according to limited ecological environment in urban area

        본 연구는 산림, 하천, 자연 녹지 등 자연생태환경과 격리된 도심 속의 생태적 패치를 분석하고 이해하여 생태적 가치가 높은 생태 환경을 조성하는 방안을 모색해 보고자 실시하였다. 분석 대상지역은 도심 속의 생태적 패치로 다양한 입지 조건으로 조성되어 활용되고 있는 국립과천과학관(경기도 과천시 상하벌로 110일원) 일대를 중심으로 선정하였다. 생태적 패치(patch) 입지별 4개의 구역으로 구분하였고 각 조사 구역 별 결과에서 곤충상은 Ⅰ구역에서 61과 135종, Ⅱ구역에서 31과 46종, Ⅲ구역에서 31과 42종, Ⅳ구역에서 13과 14종 등으로 구분되었다. 전체 조사구역의 군집 분석 결과, 다양성 지수 4.30, 종풍부도 22.74, 균등도 0.84 등으로 구분되었다. 조사 결과, 수환경과 키 작은 수목을 중심으로 하고 경작 및 원예가 재배되는 Ⅰ구역에서 종 조성이 다양하게 분포하였고 소규모 생태적패치를 조성할 경우 수환경과 원예화원, 소규모 경작지 등이 분포할때 종 다양성이 높고 생태적으로 안정된 양상이 될 것으로 기대된다.

        Pain Assessment in Brain Tumor Patients after Elective Craniotomy

        Objective: This study was performed to assess the postoperative pain of brain tumor patients who underwent elective craniotomy and to evaluate the factors associated with pain intensity. Methods: From January 2010 to December 2011, 47 patients with newly diagnosed brain tumors who underwent craniotomy were enrolled. The postoperative pain status was assessed daily until discharge using the visual analogue scale (VAS). Results: The study participants comprised of 22 males and 25 females with ages ranging from 18-76 years (median age, 50 years). Patients were divided into two groups: the painful group included patients who had a VAS score of more than 3 during their hospital stay after the craniotomy, and the tolerable group included patients who had a VAS score of 1 to 3 during their hospital stay. There were no differences between the two groups in terms of age, sex, location of surgery, history of diabetes, hypertension and smoking, body mass index, and hospital stay. Univariate analysis revealed that operating time, length of wound, head fixation, and perioperative administration of opioid were not associated with the intensity of postoperative pain. Daily assessment of VAS revealed the two peaks of pain on the operation day and the 4th postoperative day. The intensity of pain during the ambulation period was higher than that during intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Conclusion: Pain following elective craniotomy for brain tumor removal is insufficiently managed, especially after discharge from the ICU. More attention needs to be paid to patients` pain throughout the hospital stay.

        ICT 기반 이중 적외선 센서를 이용한 꿀벌 출입 자동 모니터링 시스템

        Honey bees are a vital part of the food chain as the most important pollinators for a broad palette of crops and wild plants. The climate change and colony collapse disorder (CCD) phenomenon make it challenging to develop ICT solutions to predict changes in beehive and alert about potential threats. In this paper, we report the test results of the bee-counting system which stands out against the previous analogues due to its comprehensive components including an improved dual infrared sensor to detect honey bees entering and leaving the hive, environmental sensors that measure ambient and interior, a wireless network with the bluetooth low energy (BLE) to transmit the sensing data in real time to the gateway, and a cloud which accumulate and analyze data. To assess the system accuracy, 3 persons manually counted the outgoing and incoming honey bees using the video record of 360-minute length. The difference between automatic and manual measurements for outgoing and incoming scores were 3.98% and 4.43% respectively. These differences are relatively lower than previous analogues, which inspires a vision that the tested system is a good candidate to use in precise apicultural industry, scientific research and education.

        Fuel pump is essentially functional component of automotive engine assembly whose power is supplied from engine and which is transferred to pressure and flow velocity of oil. In this study, the flow analysis of oil pump is carried out on the angle of is 0, 15, and 30 degree between inlet and outlet ports. With numerical simulation it can be calculated whether the flow rate is over 190.0 LPH(Liter Per Hour) and the pulsation is occurred. Therefore the port angle of oil pump can be designed to increase the power and decrease the noise in the diesel automobile optimally.

        Neurolysis for Megalgia Paresthetica

        Objective : Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is a syndrome of pain and/or dysesthesia in the anterolateral thigh that is caused by an entrapment of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) at its pelvic exit. Despite early accounts of MP, there is still no consensus concerning the effectiveness of neurolysis or transaction treatments in the long-term relief for medically refractory patients with MP. We retrospectively analyzed available long-term results of LFCN neurolysis for medically refractory MP in an effort to clarify this issue. Methods : During the last 7 years, 11 patients who had neurolysis for MP were enrolled in this study. Nerve entrapment was confirmed preoperatively by electrophysiological studies or a positive response to local anesthetic injection. Decompression of the LFCN was performed at the level of the iliac fascia, inguinal ligament, and fascia of the thigh distally. The outcome of surgery was assessed 8 weeks after the procedure followed at regular intervals if symptoms persisted. Results : Twelve decompression procedures were performed in 11 patients over a 7-year period. The average duration of symptoms was 8.5 months (range, 4-15 months). The average follow-up period was 33 months (range, 12-60 months). Complete and partial symptom improvement were noted in nine (81.8%) and two (18.2%) cases, respectively. No recurrence was reported. Conclusion : Neurolysis of the LFCN can provide adequate pain relief with minimal complications for medically refractory MP. To achieve a good outcome in neurolysis for MP, an accurate diagnosis with careful examination and repeated blocks of the LFCN, along with electrodiagnosis seems to be essential. Possible variation in the course of the LFCN and thorough decompression along the course of the LFCN should be kept in mind in planning decompression surgery for MP.

      • Fundamental Study of Traffic Noise Characteristic due to Change Transverse Rumble Strip Shape

        <P>Transverse rumble strips were commonly installed on approaches to intersections, toll plazas, and horizontal curves. The main function is to alert drivers by creating noise and vibration. This TRS has been demonstrated to be effective in reducing traffic accident due to sleeping. However, there are some disadvantages in its utilization, such as traffic noise produced by TRS. The objective of this study was to quantify the level of traffic noise; to verify the effects of speed and TRS shapes. Two types of vehicles [sedan and minivan] were driven over four different patterns of TRS and over cement concrete pavement at four different speeds. Researchers measured the produce noise at 7.5m distance with 1.2 m height from center of the vehicle lane at each test section. Results indicate that vehicle type, speed, TRS shape affects created traffic noise. The sound level of Type A was statistically highest among others.</P>

        Blood Compatibility of Novel Zwitterionic PEG-Grafted Nitinol Alloy for Peripheral Arterial Stents

        <P>In this study, newly synthesized zwitterionic PEG was grafted on Nitinol alloy using oxidation treatment. The surface property and blood compatibility of surface-modified Nitinols were examined. The results of surface analysis showed that the contact angle and the ratio of oxygen to carbon significantly decreased with Nitinol alloys. The total amount of fibrinogen (0.095 μg/cm2) adsorbed onto TiNi-PEG2K-N+-S- was lower than that of TiNi control (0.12 μg/cm2). The platelet adhesion decreased in the order of TiNi control > TiNi-MPEG2K > TiNi-PEG2K-N+-S. Particularly, zwitterionic PEG with PEG2K was proven better than any others. The results indicated that zwitterionic PEG surface could significantly suppress platelet adhesion and protein adsorption as compared to other samples. The present study suggested that grafted zwitterionic PEG structure may possess improved blood compatibility.</P>
