SMA(Shape Memory Alloy) has unique properties compared to other metals and metallic alloys; shape memory effect, superelasticity, damping property etc. The research for the application of those unique properties of SMA to the industry have generated extraordinary interesting for the past a few years. In this study, a chucking/clamping system of micro-factory system using Ni-Ti SMA ring with one-way shape memory effect was developed. Ar of the SMA is 15℃. In order to evaluate the tool chucking/clamping system, three kinds of SMA rings with different diameter (Φ7, Φ8.5, Φ10㎜) were tested about recovery property and position accuracy. Stress and displacement on the collet caused by SMA's shape memory effect were analysed using FEM(Finite Element Method). Finally, we found the SMA has great potential for the mechanical chucking/clamping applications in micro-factory tool holder system.
