This paper presents the tangent stiffness method for 3-D geometrically nonlinear folding analysis of a reversal arch. Experimental tests are conducted to verify the numerical analysis. The tangent stiffness method can accurately evaluate the geometrical nonlinearity due to the element translating as a rigid body, and the method can exactly handle the large rotation of the element in space. The arch in the experiment is made from a thin flat bar, and it is found that the folding process of the arch may be captured exactly by the numerical analysis with a model consisting of only 18 elements with the same properties.
The Regeneration of Traditional Music in a Chinese Rural Village

The loess plateau (or Yellow River Valley), the place of the cultural origin of mainland China, might be seen as a backward district. But during the last two decades, the 'economic reform' and the mordernisation had an effect on this area, in particular Yangjiagou village which is located in northern Shaanxi province. Here, people live in cavelike dwellings (yaodong) dug into the mountainside. They cultivate the mountain (loess hills) and grow mainly potato and millets. There are many kinds of music and sound in this village, and the 'sonic environment' of this village is an extraordinary one because of this specific landscape.The most traditional and popular music is 'chuidayue' (literally 'blowing-hitting music' with shawm and various percussion), which plays an important role in wedding and funeral rituals. While funeral ritual was preserved very rigidly, wedding was changed drastically since 1980's because of economic and social changes. In the beginning of spring 2004, some Japanese researchers organised a wedding ceremony which was planed to revive the lost wedding tradition, including the carrying of bride in a sedan chair, clothing, food, music and so on. It seems that this project was very welcomed in the village, and the villagers acknowledged the value of their lost traditions. Yet, the subsequent wedding of a villager took place in a modern style, in which the bride rode in the car and they hired a Western brass band which played popular music. I think the traditional 'chuidayue' will disappear from the wedding and even from the funeral in the near future. In fact, during a funeral in 2004, for the first time a villager used the CD of Western classical music such as the Mozart's 'Requiem'. In this reconstructed wedding ceremony, the foreign researchers showed their own notion of aesthetic value to the villagers. But there exists a gap between researchers and the local people, since the aesthetic value of the villagers is changing under Westernization and globalization.

The persistent and ubiquitous environmental contaminant, tributyltin chloride (TBT), induces not only imposex in gastropods but also the differentiation of adipocytes in vitro and increases adipose mass in vivo in vertebrates. TBT is a nanomolar affinity ligand for retinoid X receptor (RXR) in the rock shell(Thais clavigera) and for both the RXR and the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor $\gamma(PPAR\gamma)$ in the amphibian (Xenopus laevis), mouse, and human. The molecular mechanisms underlying induction of imposex by TBT have not been clarified, though several hypotheses are proposed. TBT promotes adipogenesis in the murine 3T3-L1 cell model and perturbs key regulators of adipogenesis and lipogenic pathways in vivo primarily through activation of RXR and $PPAR\gamma$. Moreover, in utero exposure to TBT leads to strikingly elevated lipid accumulation in adipose depots, liver, and testis of neonate mice and results in increased adipose mass in adults. In X. laevis, ectopic adipocytes form in and around gonadal tissues following organotin, RXR or $PPAR\gamma$ ligand exposure. TBT represents the first example of an environmental endocrine disrupter that promotes adverse effects from gastropods to mammals.

Purpose: To investigate potential beneficial effects of tocotrienols which have been suggested to inhibit hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) pathway, on partial bladder outlet obstruction (PBOO)-induced bladder pathology. Materials and Methods: PBOO was surgically created in juvenile male mice. Sham-operated mice were used as controls. Animals received daily oral administration of either tocotrienols (T3) or soybean oil (SBO, vehicle) from day 0 to 13 post-surgery. Bladder function was examined in vivo by void spot assay. At 2 weeks post-surgery, the bladders were subjected to physiological evaluation of detrusor contractility in vitro using bladder strips, histology by H&E staining and collagen imaging, and gene expression analyses by quantitative PCR. Results: A significant increase in the number of small voids was observed after 1 week of PBOO compared to the control groups. At 2 weeks post-surgery, PBOO+SBO mice showed a further increase in the number of small voids, which was not observed in PBOO+T3 group. PBOO-induced decrease in detrusor contractility was similar between two treatments. PBOO induced bladder hypertrophy to the same degree in both SBO and T3 treatment groups, however, fibrosis in the bladder was significantly less prominent in the T3 group than the SBO group following PBOO (1.8- vs. 3.0-fold increase in collagen content compared to the control). Enhanced levels of HIF target genes in the bladders were observed in PBOO+SBO group, but not in PBOO+T3 group compared to the control. Conclusions: Oral tocotrienol treatment reduced the progression of urinary frequency and bladder fibrosis by suppressing HIF pathways triggered by PBOO.

This study investigated the sexual maturation process, release of spermatozoa or eggs and oocyte diameter of the rhizostomid medusae Nemopilema nomurai using samples collected from August 2006 to June 2008 from the waters around Korea and Japan, including peripheral areas outside the species’ usual habitat. Immature medusae were observed from June to October only in the western sector of the study area. The onset of spermatozoa and egg release occurred in September and October, respectively, and peaked in December and January. Medusae migrated eastward from source areas with the Tsushima Warm Current, where they formed gametes and spawned. Peak position and maximum oocyte diameter increased as the gonads developed according to the size-frequency distribution of oocytes. No fertilized eggs or embryos were found in the gonads. The correlation was analyzed with bell diameter, maximum oocyte diameter, sampling date, surface water temperature and gonad color to estimate which environmental factors and maturation indices were related to the maturation stage of females. Maturation stage correlated well with maximum oocyte diameter, which correlated negatively with surface water temperature. There was no significant correlation between bell diameter and maturation stage. Therefore, bell diameter was inappropriate for determining maturation index. Sex could not be distinguished clearly by gonad color. However, light pink gonads were more prevalent in males and various deep colors such as orange and brown were more frequent in female medusae.

A new stamping method developed by the authors, in which a temperature gradient is imposed on the workpiece during stamping, is capable of improving stretch formability in stamping of ferritic stainless steel sheets. Unlike the conventional warm stamping method, the temperature gradient is utilized in order to diffuse the strain distribution induced in the material. Basically, the portions of the sheets which are in contact with the top of the punch and die face are heated, while simultaneously, the portions in contact with the punch corners and die corners are intensively cooled The authors developed a finite element simulation model of stamping which analyzes mechanical and thermal behaviors simultaneously utilizing LS-DYNA3D. The numerical analysis, combined with a numerical model which evaluates the ductile fracture limit of the material in the high temperature region, confirmed that the new stamping method improves stretch formability and the optimal temperature gradient is given. In order to verify the numerical analysis, an experimental apparatus was constructed, comprising a set of stamping tools containing heaters and cooling circuits. The experiments demonstrated the correctness of the numerical analysis and the effectiveness of the new stamping method.
