Enhanced antioxidant, anti-wrinkle, and anti-inflammatory potential of fermented licorice

Glycyrrhiza uralensis (licorice) has long been used for medicinal and dietary purposes. This study investigated the impact of fermented G. uralensis extract (FGE) and non-fermented G. uralensis extract (GE) on their antioxidant, antiwrinkle, and anti-inflammatory effects. The results demonstrated that FGE exhibited increased polyphenol content and enhanced antioxidant capacities compared with GE. FGE also showed increased antioxidant enzyme activity, reinforcing cellular protection against oxidative stress in 3-morpholinosydnonimine-treated HaCaT cells. FGE also indicated elevated in vitro collagenase and elastase inhibitory effects compared with GE. Furthermore, FGE demonstrated excellent antiinflammatory effects by suppressing inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, and interleukin-6 in lipopolysaccharide-treated RAW264.7 cells, indicating its potential in alleviating inflammatory conditions. Moreover, FGE decreased the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 cytokines compared with GE in phorbol 12-myristate 13- acetate plus A23187-stimulated HMC-1.2 cells. This study provides evidence that fermentation of G. uralensis enhances its antioxidant, anti-wrinkle, and anti-inflammatory effects.
Anti-Inflammatory Effect of Korean Soybean Sauce (Ganjang) on Mice with Induced Colitis

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), characterized by chronic inflammation of the gut, is caused by several factors. Among these factors, microbial factors are correlated with the gut microbiota, which produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) via anaerobic fermentation. Fermented foods are known to regulate the gut microbiota composition. Ganjang (GJ), a traditional fermented Korean soy sauce consumed worldwide, has been shown to exhibit antioxidant, anticancer, anti-colitis, and antihypertensive activities. However, its effects on the gut microbiota remain unknown. In the present study, we aimed to compare the anti-inflammatory effects of GJ manufactured using different methods and investigate its effect on SCFA production in the gut. To evaluate the antiinflammatory effects of GJ in the gut, we performed animal experiments using a mouse model of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. All GJ samples attenuated DSS-induced colitis symptoms, including reduced colonic length, by suppressing the expression of inflammatory cytokines. In addition, GJ administration modulated SCFA production in the DSS-induced colitis model. Overall, GJ exerted anti-inflammatory effects by reducing DSS-induced symptoms via regulation of inflammation and modulation of SCFA levels in a DSS-induced colitis model. Thus, GJ is a promising fermented food with the potential to prevent IBD.
발효 황기 추출물의 항산화, 항염, 콜라게나아제 및 엘라스타아제 활성 저해 효과

본 연구는 발효 황기 추출물이 발효 전 황기 추출물 보다 항산화, 항염, 콜라게나아제 및 엘라스테아제 억제 효과가 뛰어난지 평가하고자 하였다. FAE의 총 폴리페놀 및 플라보노이드 함량이 AE보다 높은 것으로 나타났으며, DPPH, ABTS 및 환원력 측정에서 FAE에서 AE보다 높은 항산화 활성을 보였다. HaCaT 세포에 SIN-1을 처리하여 효소 활성을 측정하였을 때 FAE 추출물의 처리는 감소된 SOD, catalase, GPx 활성을 AE보다 증가시키는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 LPS로 자극된 RAW264.7 세포에서 증가된NO, PGE2 및 IL-6의 발현을 AE보다 FAE에서 더 억제하는 것을 확인하였다. 또한, collagenase와 elastase의 억제활성이 AE보다 FAE에서 우수하였다. 종합하자면, FAE는 AE보다 항산화, 항염, 콜라게나아제 및 엘라스타아제 억제 효능이 있는 천연기능성 소재 및 건강기능식품 등의 소재로 활용될 수 있을 것이라 사료된다. We aimed to evaluate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-collagenase, and anti-elastase effects of fermented and non-fermented Astragalus membranaceus extracts (FAE and AE). The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of FAE were higher than those of AE. DPPH, ABTS, and reducing power assays confirmed that the radical scavenging efficacy and reducing power of FAE were higher than those of AE. In SIN-1-stimulated HaCaT cells, reduced superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase activity levels were rescued in the FAE group but not in the AE group. FAE also suppressed increases in NO, PGE2, and IL-6 levels more potently than AE in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. FAE also exhibited more potent collagenase and elastase inhibitory activities than AE. In summary, this study suggests that FAE can be used in functional foods and cosmetics with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-collagenase, and anti-elastase properties.

Object detection in aerial images is continuously studied for various purposes such as national security, disaster monitoring, and meteorological observation. It is difficult to improve recent object detection methods based on a single model using deep learning due to severe class imbalance. This paper proposes a deep ensemble method combining two models with different strengths and a class-dependent thresholding method by considering the object distribution. We demonstrate the superiority of our methods in a series of experiments. In addition, we take 1st place in both public and private scores in the Arirang satellite image AI object detection contest.
