Pediatric Eosinophilic Granuloma in the Skull after Minor Head Trauma: A Case Report

Here, we report a case of eosinophilic granuloma (EG) of the skull in a pediatric patient after minor head trauma without hemorrhage or fracture. A 15-year-old boy presented with a soft mass on the left side of his forehead. The mass was 2 cm in size and was associated with tenderness. It had grown rapidly in 1month. He had been hit by a baseball on the left side of his forehead 9 months before. Cerebral computed tomography revealed a 2-cm-sized mass in the frontal bone region on the left side with a lytic bony defect. This mass was wellenhanced on cerebral magnetic resonance imaging, and the margin was well-demarcated without intracerebral infiltration. The mass was removed surgically. Total excision was performed through craniectomy around the mass, and the bony defect was reconstructed using bone cement. Three years postoperatively, there was no local or distant recurrence. Minor trauma without hemorrhage or fracture can trigger the development of EG. In pediatric patients, clinicians should be aware of a possible association between solitary EG of the skull and minor head trauma.

본 논문에서는 SVM을 이용한 번호판 위치 추출 알고리즘을 제안한다. 일반적으로 번호판 영역은 가로-세로 비율 컬러, 공간 주파수 성분 등의 특징을 포함하고 있다. 제안하는 기법은 영상 획득, 번호판 후보 영역 추출, 번호란 위치 검증 세가지 단계로 구성되어 있다. 번호판 후보 영역 추출 단계에서는 컬러 필터링과 경계선 검출을 하여 번호판 후보 영역을 찾아내고 후보 영역의 DCT 계수를 SVM에 적용하여 검증한다. 이러한 검증과정을 거침으로써 잘못된 추출을 막아 신뢰성 있는 번호판 영역 추출이 가능하다. 실험을 통해 제안한 방법을 검증하였다. In this paper, we propose a license plate locating algorithm by using SVM. Tipically, the features regarding license plate format include height-to-width ratio, color, and spatial frequency. The method is dived into three steps which are image acquisition, detecting license plate candidate regions, verifying the license plate accurately. In the course of detecting license plate candidate regions, color filtering and edge detecting are performed to detect candidate regions, and then verify candidate region using Support Vector Machines(SVM) with DCT coefficients of candidates. It is possible to perform reliable license plate location bemuse we can protect false detection through these verification process. We validate our approach with experimental results.

In an ongoing search of compounds from natural sources that exhibit anti-allergic properties, 3 flavonoids were isolated from the ethyl acetatefraction of methanol extracts of gujeolcho (Chrysanthemum zawadskii var. latilobum), with guided histamine release inhibitory effects. The isolated compounds were identified as eriodictyol-7-O-${\beta}$-D-glucuronide, 5,7-dihydroxy-4-chromene, and 6-methoxyluteolin based on spectroscopic evidences including NMR and MS spectra. These results suggest that gujeolcho extracts and 3 compounds would be candidates as therapeutic or preventive agents for allergic reaction.

We have proposed and demonstrated an gas-flow sensor using optical fiber bragg grating(FEG). The flow sensor has no electronics and no mechanical parts in its sensing part and the structure is th11s simple and immune to electromagnetic interference(EMI). The FEG sensor was consisted qf the sensing element and a coil heater. The metal coil was used to supply the current to the FEG. While some currents supply to the coil, the refractive index of the FEG under the coil is changed and thus the wavelength shift of fiber optic sensor was induced In this work, the wavelength shift according to flow-rate was experimentally studied and was used to evaluate the gas flow-rate in a gas tube. As a result, it was possible to measure the flow-rate in a linear range from 5 to $20{\ell}/min$ with a resolution of approximately $1{\ell}/min$ at the applied currents of 100 mA and 120 mA. The measured sensitivities were $15.3\;pm/\ell/min$ for 100 mA and $20.2\;pm/\ell/min$ for 120 mA.

Verbena officinalis (Verbenaceae) has been used as herbal medicine or health supplement in both Western and Eastern countries for centuries. In the present study, we examined the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of the methylene chloride fraction of V. officinalis (VMC). To elucidate the anti-inflammatory properties of VMC, we investigated the inhibition effects of nitric oxide production in interferon-gamma (IFN-$\gamma$) and lipopolysaccharide-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages. VMC suppressed nitric oxide production, inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 expression dose-dependently without notable cytotoxicity. In various radical scavenging assays, VMC exhibited strong scavenging effect on DPPH radical, superoxide radical, nitric oxide radical and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical. VMC also showed potent reducing power. These findings strongly suggest that VMC may be beneficial in oxidative stress-mediated inflammatory disorders.

<P>BACKGROUND: Anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) abnormalities have been implicated consistently in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet it remains unclear whether these abnormalities originated during early neurodevelopment. In this study, we examined the ACC sulcal/gyral patterns to investigate whether neurodevelopmental anomalies of the ACC were present in patients with OCD. We hypothesized that patients with OCD would show reduced cortical folding of the ACC compared with controls. METHODS: We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of 169 healthy volunteers and 110 patients with OCD to examine the paracingulate sulcus and cingulate sulcus. We assessed cortical folding patterns according to established classification criteria and constructed 3 categories of paracingulate sulcus morphology according to its presence and anteroposterior extent: 'prominent,' 'present' and 'absent.' We classified the cingulate sulcus as 'interrupted' or 'continuous' according to the interruptions in its course. In addition, we evaluated ACC sulcal asymmetry based on interhemispheric comparisons of paracingulate sulcus morphology. RESULTS: Analyses revealed that patients with OCD were significantly less likely than controls to show a well-developed left paracingulate sulcus: 50.0% of patients and 65.1% of controls showed a 'prominent' or 'present' paracingulate sulcus in the left hemisphere. However, there were no differences in regard to cingulate sulcus continuity, and patients also showed the same leftward ACC sulcal asymmetry as controls. LIMITATIONS: Our study was limited by the fact that we obtained the MRI scans from 2 different scanners, and we did not calculate cerebral fissurization as our study was restricted to 1 specific brain region. Moreover, patients and controls differed significantly in terms of sex ratio and IQ, although we controlled these variables as covariates. CONCLUSION: Our findings imply a subtle deviation in the early neurodevelopment of the ACC in patients with OCD, but the extent to which these anomalies contributed to the pathogenesis of OCD remains unclear. Further studies that link the ACC morphologic anomalies to the pathophysiology of OCD are recommended.</P>

Background: Laparoscopic surgery has increased in popularity due to its small skin incision, reduced postoperative pain and short hospital day. But increased abdominal pressure caused by CO_2 insufflation and Trendelenburg position or reverse Trendelenburg position affects cardiovascular function and pulmonary ventilation. Some studies suggested that Trendelenburg position affect more serious results on pulmonary ventilation than reverse Trendelenburg position, but others do not. So we designed this study to compare the difference of peak inspiratory pressures and arterial blood gases between Trendelenburg position and reverse Trendelenburg position in laparoscopic surgery. Methods: Twenty patients undergoing laparoscopic operation were randomized into two groups. Group Ⅰ (n = 10) was laparoscopic gynecological surgery under Trendelenburg position, and group Ⅱ (n = 10) was laparoscopic cholecystectomy under reverse Trendelenburg position. All patients were mechanically ventilated (a tidal volume of 12 ㎖/㎏ at a respiratory rate of 12 breaths/minute) with 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen with enflurane. We measured peak inspiratory pressure, PaO_2 and PaCO_2 at pre-CO_2 insufflation, 10 minute after CO_2 insufflation, 30 minute after CO_2 insufflation and 10 minute after CO_2 deflation, respectively. Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups in peak inspiratory pressure, PaCO_2 and PaO_2. Conclusions: We suggest that there are no changes in pulmonary ventilation between Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg position in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery.

Volatiles from Mallus pumila Miller Var. Fuji, Ralls Janet and Jonathan during maturity were examined. The volatiles of apples were collected by the headspace trapping method using. Tenax GC and identified by gas liquid chromatography and GC-mass spectrometry. Among over 34 GLC peaks, 23 esters, 9 alcohols and 2 aldehydes were identified. The quantity of volatiles produced was increased in proportion to the degree of maturity, and 1-butanol, isobutyl butyrate, 2-pentanol, ethyl valerate and hexanal were major.
