This paper demonstrates the application of the θ-method of convergence to the solution of absorber, stripper, and liquid-liquid extraction. By the solution of a wide variety of examples, it is demonstrated that the θ-method is exceedingly fast and converges for all problems of the type which appear to be of commercial interest.

The gonadotropins follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) and their receptors play critical roles in vertebrate reproduction. In order to study intra- and interspecies ligand promiscuity of gonadotropins, COS-7 cells were transiently transfected with one of the gonadotropin receptor genes, FSHR or LHR, and tested for activation by gonadotropins from representative fish orders: Aquilliformes (eel; e), Salmoniformes (trout; tr), and Perciformes (tilapia; ta), and of mammalian origin: porcine (p), bovine (b) and human (h). The study reveals complex relations between the gonadotropin hormones and their receptors. Each gonadotropin activated its own cognate receptor. However, taLHR was also activated by hCG and eLHR was activated by hFSH, hCG, and trFSH. For FSHR, the only cross-reactivity detected was for hFSHR, which was activated by pFSH and bFSH. These findings are of great interest and applicability in the context of activation of various GTHRs by their ligands and by ligands from other vertebrates. Analysis of the three-dimensional models of the structures highlights the importance of residues outside of the currently established hormone-receptor interface region. In addition, the interface residues in taFSHR and the effect of exon duplication, which causes an insert in the LRR domain, are suggested to affect the interaction and binding of taFSH.
OECD/NEA Sandia Fuel Project phase I: Benchmark of the ignition testing

The OECD/NEA Sandia Fuel Project provided unique thermal-hydraulic experimental data associated with Spent Fuel Pool (SFP) complete drain down. The study conducted at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) was successfully completed (July 2009 to February 2013). The accident conditions of interest for the SFP were simulated in a full scale prototypic fashion (electrically heated, prototypic assemblies in a prototypic SFP rack) so that the experimental results closely represent actual fuel assembly responses. A major impetus for this work was to facilitate severe accident code validation and to reduce modeling uncertainties within the codes. Phase I focused on axial heating and burn propagation in a single PWR 17x17 assembly (i.e. ''hot neighbors'' configuration). Phase II addressed axial and radial heating and zirconium fire propagation including effects of fuel rod ballooning in a 1x4 assembly configuration (i.e. single, hot center assembly and four, ''cooler neighbors''). This paper summarizes the comparative analysis regarding the final destructive ignition test of the phase I of the project. The objective of the benchmark is to evaluate and compare the predictive capabilities of computer codes concerning the ignition testing of PWR fuel assemblies. Nine institutions from eight different countries were involved in the benchmark calculations. The time to ignition and the maximum temperature are adequately captured by the calculations. It is believed that the benchmark constitutes an enlargement of the validation range for the codes to the conditions tested, thus enhancing the code applicability to other fuel assembly designs and configurations. The comparison of lumped parameter and CFD computer codes represents a further valuable achievement.
Grand Designs? The Architecture of Building EU Studies in New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific

Superficially, the architecture of EU Studies in the Asia-Pacific can appear complex, occasionally overlapping and subject to changing contexts. However, the construction of five separate identities over the last quarter-century reflects local demands and opportunities rather than any incoherence or implied competition between actors. The glue linking all of these initiatives together has been the University of Canterbury’s management of five distinct EU Studies personalities: EUSANZ; NCRE; EUSAAP; EUCN; and latterly ESAANZ. The separate functions, linkages and membership of each of these are discussed and the fundamental role played by EU funding support underlined.
