        IDENTIFICATION AND EVALUATION OF HUMAN FACTORS ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH EMERGING NUCLEAR PLANT TECHNOLOGY

        This study has identified human performance research issues associated with the implementation of new technology in nuclear power plants (NPPs). To identify the research issues, current industry developments and trends were evaluated in the areas of reactor technology, instrumentation and control technology, human-system integration technology, and human factors engineering (HFE) methods and tools. The issues were prioritized into four categories based on evaluations provided by 14 independent subject matter experts representing vendors, utilities, research organizations and regulators. Twenty issues were categorized into the top priority category. The study also identifies the priority of each issue and the rationale for those in the top priority category. The top priority issues were then organized into research program areas of: New Concepts of Operation using Multi-agent Teams, Human-system Interface Design, Complexity Issues in Advanced Systems, Operating Experience of New and Modernized Plants, and HFE Methods and Tools. The results can serve as input to the development of a long-term strategy and plan for addressing human performance in these areas to support the safe operation of new NPPs.

        「이생규장전(李生窺墻傳)」과 「그 여자네 집」 함께 읽기를 통한 한문소설 수업 방안 모색

        본고에서는 한문소설 강독 수업에서 학습자의 흥미를 유발하고 학습 효과를 제고하기 위해 비교 독서의 방법을 시도해 보았다. 김시습의 「이생규장전」과 박완서의 「그 여자네 집」이 그 비교 독서의 대상이 되었다. 각각 14세기와 20세기를 시간적 배경으로 삼은 이 두 작품의 남녀 주인공, 즉 이생과 최씨 그리고 장만득과 곱단은 저마다 용모가 준수하고 총명한 데다 문예 취향이 있는 인물들이다. 이들은 같은 마을에 살며 그 마을을 대표할 만한 아름답고도 이상적인 청춘남녀로 귀하게 여겨졌으며, 가족과 마을 사람들의 지지와 축복 속에 자연스럽게 가까워지게 되었다. 학생 신분의 두 남자 주인공이 옆구리에 책을 끼고 오가던 낯익은 통학길은 그들이 저마다 연인을 만나고 사랑을 가꾸어가는 장소가 되어 주었다. 그 장소는, 각각의 소설이 창작된 시간의 간극 500년을 뛰어넘어, 지금 북한의 황해북도 개성이라는 공간적 일치점을 갖는다. 요컨대 두 쌍의 청춘남녀, 그리고 그들을 사랑한 가족과 공동체는 모두 개성 사람인 것이다. 이 두 쌍의 청춘남녀의 행복한 사랑은 오직 짧은 시간 동안만 환하게 빛났을 뿐, 그 뒤에는 곧 길고 어두운 이별이 영원히 이어졌다. 이생과 혼인한 지 얼마 되지 않은 최씨는 1361년 홍건적의 침입 때 外賊의 겁탈에 저항하다 목숨을 잃었다. 만득과의 혼인을 기다리던 곱단은 1945년 ‘정신대’에 끌려가지 않기 위해 중년 남자의 재취가 되어 고향 마을을 떠났고 다시는 돌아오지 못했다. 두 주인공 여성은 전쟁과 외침에 수반되는 여성에 대한 성폭력을 피하는 과정에서 처참한 죽음, 혹은 죽음과 다름없는 희생을 당했다. 그리고 두 주인공 남성은 가장 사랑하는 사람을 영영 잃은 채 세상에 남겨졌으나 끝내 그 사람을 마음에 간직했다. 이처럼 주인공 남녀가 ‘짧은 만남과 긴 이별’을 겪었다는 점, 그리고 이들의 인연을 관통하는 가치가 사랑을 넘어선 信義라는 점이 또한 「이생규장전」과 「그 여자네 집」이 공유한 바라 할 수 있을 것이다. 창작시기 면에서 500년이 넘는 간극에도 불구하고, 이 두 한국소설은 이처럼 상당한 공통점을 가지고 있다. 이 점에서 학습자는 「그 여자네 집」을 디딤돌로 삼아 한문소설인 「이생규장전」 등장인물의 성격과 내면심리의 이해를 보다 구체화할 수 있다. 아울러 북한의 개성을 공간적 배경으로 삼은 이 두 작품의 공통점과 그 이유를 탐구하는 과정은, 한반도 주민의 당면 과제인 평화와 통일이라는 문제와 관련하여 시야를 열어나가는 데 도움이 될 수 있다. In this thesis, by comparing a Korean novel of the Joseon Dynasty with a modern Korean novel, I tried to find a method to induce the interest of learners and enhance the learning effect in the class reading Sino-Korean novels. Kim Si-seup's “Yisaeng peeks inside the fence” and Park Wan-seo's “Her House” are the objects of comparison. With the 14th and 20th centuries as temporal backgrounds, respectively, the male and female protagonists of these two novels, namely, Yisaeng and Lady Choi, and Man-deuk and Gopdan, each have a good appearance, intelligent, and literary taste. They lived in the same village and were regarded as precious as beautiful and ideal young men and women who could represent the village, and they naturally came close to the support and blessings of their families and villagers. The familiar commute road where two male protagonists of student status came and went with books on their sides became a place where they met their lover and made love. The place, beyond the 500-year gap in the time when each novel was created, has a spatial congruence point of Gaeseong in North Korea. In short, the two pairs of young men and women, and the family and community who loved them, are all Gaeseong people. The happy love of these two pairs of young men and women shone brightly only for a short period of time, and a long and dark farewell followed forever. The two female protagonists suffered a terrible death or a sacrifice equal to death in the process of avoiding sexual violence against women accompanying war and foreign invasion. And the two male protagonists were left in the world with their loved ones forever lost, but in the end they kept that person in mind. Despite the gap of more than 500 years in terms of creation period, these two Korean novels have such a great deal in common. In this respect, the learner can understand the character's inner psychology more specifically. Moreover, the learners who are residents of the Korean peninsula can advance to deep thoughts on the issue of peace and reunification of Korea.

        Atlanto-occipital assimilation: embryological basis and its clinical significance

        Atlanto-occipital assimilation is an osseous embryological anomaly of the craniovertebral junction in which the atlas (C1) is fused to the occiput of skull. Embryologically, this assimilation may happen due to failure of the segmentation and separation of the caudal occipital and the cranial cervical sclerotome. The segmentation clock is maintained by NOTCH and WNT signalling pathways along with Hox genes and retinoic acid. This condition is likely to be a consequence of mutation in above mentioned genes. The knowledge of this assimilation may be crucial for the clinicians as it may lead to various neurovascular symptoms. The present case report involves the analysis of atlanto-occipital assimilation with its clinical significance and embryological basis.

      • Imaging Individual Proton-Conducting Spots on Sulfonated Multiblock-Copolymer Membrane under Controlled Hydrogen Atmosphere by Current-Sensing Atomic Force Microscopy

        <P>The proton-conductive spots on the membrane surface of sulfonated poly(arylene ether) multiblock copolymer were successfully imaged by current-sensing atomic force microscopy under hydrogen atmosphere at various temperatures and humidities. These spots should be connected to the proton-conductive paths inside the membrane. The average diameter of the spots was approximately 12 nm, consistent with the size of hydrophilic domains observed by transmission electron microscopy. The size of the proton-conducting spots was almost unchanged regardless of the temperature and humidity, whereas the number of the spots increased at higher humidity; the total area of the proton-conducting spots increased accordingly on the membrane surface.         Enzymatic Degradation of Poly(γ-glutamic acid) Hydrogel Prepared by γ-Ray Irradiation

        A bacterial strain PHA which produces an enzyme catalyzing the degradation of crosslinked poly(γ-glutamic acid) hydrogels, was isolated and identified as a Flavobacterium sp. The enzyme was obtained by the sonication of the bacterial cells preincubated in a Bouillon medium with shaking, without adding of poly(γ-glutamic acid) as an inducer. The products of the hydrogel degraded by the crude enzyme agreed closely with the depolymerized materials in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis using methylene blue staining, and with a glutamic acid monomer on thin-layer chromatography, thereby suggesting that strain PH-4 produced a kind of exohydrolase.

      • Multilevel Model Analysis to Detection of the Fake News

        Social media has changed into a platform that people can create, consume and exchange information, including fake news. With the growing influence of fake news, people need to have the ability to distinguish fake news from real news. Fake news can be defined as an article that includes inappropriate content, ranging from random misinformation to intentionally inaccurate and deceitful information. Different emotions cause different judgments, which means fake news encouraged peoples emotional dependence. People can block fake news primarily by two approaches. The linguistic approach is to find language leakage or deceptive cue in the content of the article. The network approach is using network properties and behavior that rely on deceptive language and leakage cues to predict deception. Statistical models are hierarchical linear models (HLM) and structural equation models (SEM). The governments must come up with regulations for combating fake news. We have to go through a fact-checking process in advance to see if the news is trustworthy or not before accepting any information. Also, we should not redistribute the news, such as sharing it with others or posting it on our social media, until it is revealed whether the news is accurate or not.

        Contributed Mini Review : The role of microRNAs in cell fate determination of mesenchymal stem cells : balancing adipogenesis and osteogenesis

        Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells capable of differentiating into adipocytes, osteoblasts, or chondrocytes. A mutually inhibitory relationship exists between osteogenic and adipogenic lineage commitment and differentiation. Such cell fate decision is regulated by several signaling pathways, including Wnt and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP). Accumulating evidence indicates that microRNAs (miRNAs) act as switches for MSCs to differentiate into either osteogenic or adipogenic lineage. Different miRNAs have been reported to regulate a master transcription factor for osteogenesis, such as Runx2, as well as molecules in the Wnt or BMP signaling pathway, and control the balance between osteoblast and adipocyte differentiation. Here, we discuss recent advancement of the cell fate decision of MSCs by miRNAs and their targets. [BMB Reports 2015; 48(6): 319-323]

        Experimental Study on Low-Speed Control for Motorcycles Using SPACAR Model and Gain-Scheduling Control

        Recently, many studies have presented on realizing novel mobility technologies with consideration for aging society. The aim of these studies is to establish autonomous driving technology (ADT). The objects of ADT are mainly four-wheel motor vehicles. On the other hand, ADT for motorcycles has not been fully addressed yet. Motorcycles have straight-line stability in the state of high-speed driving. However, their stability tends to diminish when being driven at extremely low speed. This study addresses how a motorcycle should be stabilized under low-speed driving. From the viewpoint of actual use, including high-speed driving, major structural changes should be avoided. In order to obtain a linearized motorcycle model without skidding, a model based on SPACAR, a finite element method computation program, is introduced. Furthermore, velocity-dependent gain-scheduling control is applied to utilize the feedback control gains obtained by the linearized model with respect to velocity. Following the deceleration simulation success in the authors’ previous paper, we mainly verify the experimental investigation of the above model and control system design. The gain-scheduling method is improved from that in the previous simulation study. The experimental responses show stable driving at 1.5 km/h.
