<B>ABSTRACT</B><B>Background:</B><P>Epidemiological studies have reported that higher education (HE) is associated with a reduced risk of incident Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, after the clinical onset of AD, patients with HE levels show more rapid cognitive decline than patients with lower education (LE) levels. Although education level and cognition have been linked, there have been few longitudinal studies investigating the relationship between education level and cortical decline in patients with AD. The aim of this study was to compare the topography of cortical atrophy longitudinally between AD patients with HE (HE-AD) and AD patients with LE (LE-AD).</P><B>Methods:</B><P>We prospectively recruited 36 patients with early-stage AD and 14 normal controls. The patients were classified into two groups according to educational level, 23 HE-AD (>9 years) and 13 LE-AD (≤9 years).</P><B>Results:</B><P>As AD progressed over the 5-year longitudinal follow-ups, the HE-AD showed a significant group-by-time interaction in the right dorsolateral frontal and precuneus, and the left parahippocampal regions compared to the LE-AD.</P><B>Conclusion:</B><P>Our study reveals that the preliminary longitudinal effect of HE accelerates cortical atrophy in AD patients over time, which underlines the importance of education level for predicting prognosis.</P>

A winged midge species, Parochlus steinenii is one of the most abundant species in Antarctica, which is distributed over a wide area from the South American continent to the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica. It was dispersed into islands in the South Shetland Islands from the South American continent, and it adapted to a variety of environments and settled. This species, therefore, is a good model organism to explain the evolutionary process of Antarctic terrestrial fauna. Nevertheless, there are few genetic studies on this species, which are necessary for understanding the genetic diversity, population structure, etc. Here, we developed and characterized 14 polymorphic microsatellite markers. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 5. The observed and expected heterozygosities were in the range of 0.024 to 0.561 and 0.024 to 0.535, respectively. Identifying genetic differences between populations, they are suitable markers for researches investigating genetic diversity and population structure of P. steinenii, which provide us with clues to dispersion, evolution and ecology of this species.
Gray and white matter changes linking cerebral small vessel disease to gait disturbances

<P>Objective: To investigate the topographic changes of white matter (WM) integrity and cortical thickness related to gait disturbances and determine whether these neural correlates mediate the association between cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and gait disturbances. Methods: A total of 129 patients with subcortical vascular cognitive impairment were included. CSVD severity was quantified as global and regional WM hyperintensities (WMH) volume and lacune and microbleed numbers. Amyloid burdens were assessed using Pittsburgh compound B (PiB)-PET scanning. Gait score was measured using a standardized scale. WM integrity was assessed by applying tract-based spatial statistics. Cortical thickness was measured using surface-based methods. Path analysis for gait score was performed using regional CSVD markers as predictors and fractional anisotropy (FA) and cortical thickness as mediators. Results: Periventricular WMH (PWMH) volume was associated with gait score, regardless of other CSVD. PiB retention ratio was not associated with gait score. Gait score was correlated with FA in the frontal and parietal WM and bilateral corpus callosum and with cortical thinning in the bilateral frontal and lateral temporo-parieto-occipital regions. Path analysis for gait score showed that PWMH contributed to gait disturbances with the mediation of mean FA or cortical thickness. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that WMH-related cortical thinning as well as disrupted integrity of periventricular WM is linked to gait disturbances.</P>
UV-curing kinetics and performance development of <i>in situ</i> curable 3D printing materials

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>As three-dimensional (3D) printing technology is emerging as an alternative way of manufacturing, the high resolution 3D printing device often requires systems such as drop jetting printing of <I>in situ</I> UV-curable photopolymers. Accordingly, the key issue is process control and its optimization to ensure dimensional accuracy, surface roughness, building orientation, and mechanical properties of printed structures, which are based on the time- and temperature-dependent glass transition temperature (<I>T<SUB>g</SUB> </I>) of the resin system under UV-curing. In this study, the UV-cure kinetics and <I>T<SUB>g</SUB> </I> development of a commercially available UV-curable acrylic resin system were investigated as a model system, using a differential scanning photocalorimeter (DPC). The developed kinetic model included the limited conversion of cure that could be achieved as a maximum at a specific isothermal curing temperature. Using the developed model, the <I>T<SUB>g</SUB> </I> was successfully described by a modified DiBenedetto equation as a function of UV curing. The developed kinetic model and <I>T<SUB>g</SUB> </I> development can be used to determine the 3D printing operating conditions for the overlay printing and <I>in situ</I> UV curing, which could ensure high-resolution and high-speed manufacturing with various UV-curing materials.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> UV-cure kinetic analysis were applied to a commercial Multi-jet 3D printing material. </LI> <LI> The developed kinetic model included the limited conversion of cure by temperature. </LI> <LI> The <I>T<SUB>g</SUB> </I> was described by a modified DiBenedetto equation as a function of UV curing. </LI> <LI> The developed kinetic model showed an excellent agreement to isothermal experiments. </LI> <LI> The overlay printing time for each isothermal temperature was determined. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Purpose: Hypothermia upon admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) contributes significantly to various neonatal complications, particularly in preterm infants. This study aimed to assess the impact of quality improvement (QI) interventions, including using plastic bags and head caps, and adjusting delivery room temperatures, on improving the admission body temperature and reducing hypothermia in infants born at less than 32 weeks or weighing 1,500 g. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed the medical records of infants born at less than 32 weeks or weighing 1,500 g who admitted to the NICU at Samsung Medical Center from January 2022 to February 2024. The QI program that was initiated in April 2023 focused on managing admission temperatures using plastic bags and head caps, and maintaining delivery room temperatures at ≥25 °C. The admission temperature and short-term outcomes pre- and post-QI were compared. Results: In a study of 270 patients, implementing QI initiatives significantly raised the admission temperature from 36.2±0.5 to 36.4±0.4 °C (P<0.01), particularly impacting infants weighing ≥1,000 g, in whom mild hypothermia occurrences dropped from 76.3% to 43.9% (P<0.01). This improvement in temperature management significantly decreased both mild and severe hypothermia rates post-QI. Additionally, implementing all three initiatives was more effective than when two or fewer initiatives were implemented. Conclusion: Simple and cost-effective QI interventions can increase admission temperatures and decrease hypothermia in neonates. Further research is essential to explore the long-term outcomes and develop effective hypothermia management strategies in neonatal care.

<P>Pathophysiological evidences of AD have indicated that aggregation of Aβ is one of the principal causes of neuronal dysfunction, largely by way of inducing oxidative stresses such as free radical formation. We hypothesized that the known antioxidative attribute of SFN could be harnessed in Alzheimer’s treatment. SFN is an indirect, potent antioxidant derived from broccoli that has previously been found to stimulate the Nrf2-ARE pathway and facilitate several other cytoprotective mechanisms. In this study, administration of SFN ameliorated cognitive function of Aβ-induced AD acute mouse models in Y-maze and passive avoidance behavior tests. Interestingly, we found that the therapeutic effect of SFN did not involve inhibition of Aβ aggregation.
