NELL2 Function in Axon Development of Hippocampal Neurons

Neurons have multiple dendrites and single axon. This neuronal polarity is gradually established during early processes of neuronal differentiation: generation of multiple neurites (stages 1-2); differentiation (stage 3) and maturation (stages 4-5) of an axon and dendrites. In this study, we demonstrated that the neuron-specific n-glycosylated protein NELL2 is important for neuronal polarization and axon growth using cultured rat embryonic hippocampal neurons. Endogenous NELL2 expression was gradually increased in parallel with the progression of developmental stages of hippocampal neurons, and overexpression of NELL2 stimulated neuronal polarization and axon growth. In line with these results, knockdown of NELL2 expression resulted in deterioration of neuronal development, including inhibition of neuronal development progression, decreased axon growth and increased axon branching. Inhibitor against extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) dramatically inhibited NELL2-induced progression of neuronal development and axon growth. These results suggest that NELL2 is an important regulator for the morphological development for neuronal polarization and axon growth.

The precision equipment for precision processing, manufacturing, and inspection process are usually managed in a strictly vibration-controlled environment that uses vibration isolators. To complement the weaknesses of these isolators, we designed and tested two types of mechanical adjustable dampers with helical gear: a box-like adjustable damper with a comb-type orifice and a round damper with a wing-type orifice. Additionally, we designed two versions for the latter: a standard version and an enhanced version to improve the variable performance. We then compared the performance of these two versions during their modal tests. Not surprisingly, the test showed that the enhanced version was superior to the standard version in variable damping. For this reason, we expect this damper to be particularly useful to semiconductor manufacturing facilities where the precision equipment are located.

Background A shift is being made from a mass production system centered on large corporations to a design-driven and mass-customization system focused on consumers by 3D printing technology, which is effective for small quantity production of various types. However, it is difficult for small and medium-sized industrial design companies to activate their business by utilizing the industrial value of 3D printing. Methods Literature research was conducted on basic data for corporate demand surveys in 56 papers related to '3D printing', and business model components were derived from 12 papers related to 'business models'. A survey was conducted on 437 design-specialized companies in G area, and business model RAV and framework were proposed based on the responses of 101 companies and the results of previous research. Results Through literature research, the industrial characteristics of 3D printing, applications in the industrial design field, and components of business models were derived. Key Resource, Key Activities and Key Value Proposition were derived as components of the business model using 3D printing. 'Business Model RAV' and a framework were proposed by applying them to the four business activation fields based on 3D printing. Conclusion We found the necessity of research on the product development process and design marketing according to the product life type beyond the concept of the product development process according to the product life cycle. In the future, we intend to expand and apply business models by product life type based on the contents of this study.
