Background/Aims: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the major cause of chronic liver disease and hepatocellular ADAM17 gene was more increased in CD133+ cells than CD133- cells treated with g-irradiation. In addition CD133+ cells from radiation exposure were consistently expressed higher levels of vascular endothelial growth factor by Multiplex cytokine analysis. After irradiation, CD133+ cells migrated more actively, and showed an increased invasion rate compared to CD133- cell. Gelatin zymography showed that MMP-2, -9 expressions are significantly higher in CD133+ cells. Furthermore, shADAM17CD133+ cells reduced migration activity after g-irradiation exposure. Conclusions: These results suggest that CD133+ cells have more metastatic capacity than CD133- cells after treating irradiation. These data further suggest that molecular therapeutic inhibition of cell migration and invasion through ADAM17 suppression may represent a new approach for improving the therapeutic efficacy of radiotherapy for HCC. Background/Aims: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the major cause of chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma in Korea. After hepatitis B vaccine era, the seroprevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is decreasing, especially in children and adolescents. In this study we estimated the nationwide, age-, sex- and area- adjusted seroprevalence of HBV infection in 2009. Methods: We reviewed data of a total of 290,212 subjects who had received health check-up examination in 27 institutions from January to December 2009. The estimated seroprevalence was adjusted by age, sex and area of the standard population based on the 2009 Census of Korea. Results: The overall seroprevalences of HBsAg and anti-HBs adjusted by age, sex and area were 4.0% and 73.5%, respectively. The area- and age- adjusted HBsAg positivity was higher in men (4.5%) than in women (3.4%) (p<0.001). The sex- and area- adjusted HBsAg positivity was the most common in forties and showed decreasing trend in age. The HBsAg positivity in Southern province including Jeju was significantly higher than that in central province(p<0.001). The area- and age- adjusted anti-HBs positivity was lower in men (71.6%) than in women (75.4%) (p<0.001). The seropositivity of anti-HBs was the lowest in Jeonnam. The concurrent positivity of HBsAg and anti-HBs was found in 0.1% of the subjects. The comparison between patients showing sole positive for HBsAg and patients showing concurrent positive for HBsAg and anti-HBs will be presented. Conclusions: The seroprevalence of HBV infection showed differences according to age, sex and areas in Korea. As the seroepidemiology is dynamically changing, and the overall seropositivity of HBsAg has shown continuously decreasing trend.

<P>The current study was undertaken to validate the performance for the determination of both TBA and β-trenbolone (β-TB) residues in porcine muscle at concentrations required to monitor compliance with the maximum residue limit (MRL). The method involves a one phase liquid–liquid extraction, cleanup with low-temperature fat precipitation, separation of the respective compounds by HPLC on a Capcell pak C<SUB>18</SUB> column, use of a methanol–water isocratic system as an eluent, and measurement by UV absorbance detection at 340 nm. Both compounds were confirmed using LC-MS/MS with electrospray interface (ESI) and a triple quadrupole (QqQ) analyzer. The method was found to be precise and accurate, with a linearity range of 1–10 μg/kg (r<SUP>2</SUP> >0.973). The intra- and interday precision showed good reproducibility with RSDs ⪇13.25%. The LODs were 0.12 and 0.22 μg/kg, and the LOQs were 0.37 and 0.66 μg/kg, for TBA and β-TB, respectively. The applicability of the method was demonstrated by analyzing real samples collected from major cities in the Republic of Korea. No residues of the selected compounds were detected in any of the samples. The advantages of our method are that it is: selective, sensitive, requires a short time for analysis (13 min), and performs simple sample extraction and clean-up procedure with low-temperature fat precipitation as compared to the previously published methods.</P>

Objectives: On February 16, 2022, 12 cases of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection were reported in a food manufacturing factory in Korea. The aim of this study was to identify additional cases and to determine the source of this HEV outbreak. Methods: This study was an in-depth investigation of 12 HEV immunoglobulin M (IgM)-positive cases and their demographic, clinical, and epidemiological characteristics. On-site specimens were collected from the environment and from humans, and a follow-up investigation was conducted 2 to 3 months after the outbreak. Results: Among 80 production workers in the factory, 12 (15.0%) had acute HEV infection, all of whom were asymptomatic. The follow-up investigation showed that 3 cases were HEV IgM-positive, while 6 were HEV IgG-positive. HEV genes were not detected in the HEV IgM-positive specimens. HEV genes were not detected in the food products or environmental specimens collected on-site. HEV was presumed to be the causative pathogen. However, it could not be confirmed that the source of infection was common consumption inside the factory. Conclusion: This was the first domestic case of an HEV infection outbreak in a food manufacturing factory in Korea. Our results provide information for the future control of outbreaks and for the preparation of measures to prevent domestic outbreaks of HEV infection.

<P>Extracellular superoxide dismutase (EC-SOD) is the only enzyme that removes superoxide radical in the extracellular space. The reduction of EC-SOD is linked to many diseases, suggesting that the protein may have therapeutic value. EC-SOD is reported to be insoluble and to make inclusion bodies when overexpressed in the cytoplasm of Escherichia coli. The refolding process has the advantage of high yield, but has the disadvantage of frequent aggregation or misfolding during purification. For the first time, this study shows that fusion with maltose-binding protein (MBP), N-utilization substance protein A, and protein disulfide isomerase enabled the soluble overexpression of EC-SOD in the cytoplasm of E. coli. MBP-tagged human EC-SOD (hEC-SOD) was purified by MBP affinity and anion exchange chromatography, and its identity was confirmed by MALDI-TOF MS analysis. The purified protein showed good enzyme activity in vitro; however, there was a difference in metal binding. When copper and zinc were incorporated into hEC-SOD before MBP tag cleavage, the enzymatic activity was higher than when the metal ions were bound to the purified protein after MBP tag cleavage. Therefore, the enzymatic activity of hEC-SOD is associated with metal incorporation and protein folding via disulfide bond.</P>

Background : This study is designed to select a wide-shading facility model for ginseng, which is suitable for coping with the climate change and for saving labor for culture in Gyeonggi Area on the growth of 5-year old ginseng according to the micrometeorology and photosynthesis for each model. Methods and Results : Wide-shading facilities were installed per model in 2017, such as the slope-shading facility I (Gyeongsangbuk-do ARES), slop-shading facility II (Gyeonggi-do, ARES), and roof-type shading facility (RDA). The black shading nets were installed for the slope-shading facility I and the blue shading nets were installed for both slope-shading facility II and roof-type facility in mid-April, 2017. As for the slope-shading II, aluminum screens 40% were additionally installed in the high temperature period of summer (from July to August). On Apr. 3rd, 2017, 90 2-year seedlings were transplanted per each treatment area of 1.62㎡. Micrometeorological device were installed in the middle section of the wide slope-shading facility in order to measure the amount of light, temperature, leakage, thermal image and optical spectrum. The photosynthesis was measured in the middle section of small leaves by using a photosynthesis measuring device (LI-6400, Li-COR) at 9:00 - 10:00 at 200μ mol s<sup>-1</sup>m<sup>-2</sup>. During the high temperature period of July and August, the maximum temperature under the roof type wide-shading facility was higher than that under slope-shading facility I or slop-shading facility II. The optical spectrum analysis for each treatment indicated the followings; slop-shading facilities using black shading nets showed similar patterns for natural light but as for slope-shading facilities II and roof-type shading facilities which use blue shading nets, the penetration of yellow, green and red light was lower in the wide band spectrum of blue, green, yellow and red. In the thermal image comparison, the slope-shading facility I, slop-shading facility II and roof type shading facility showed similar temperatures of 42.6 - 43.6℃. As for the growth of the above-ground part of ginseng per broad band type and model, the slope-shading facility I and slope-shading facility II showed good results while as for the photosynthesis, the slope-shading facility II showed to be a little higher. As for the growth of underground part of 5-year old ginseng, the length, diameter and weight of root under the slope-shading facility I and slope-shading facility II were better than those of root-type shading facility while, as for the weight of ginseng roots, that under the slope-shading II (1.92 ㎏/1.62㎡) was higher by 0.56 ㎏ than that under root-type shading facility. Conclusion : It is concluded that considering the climatic environment and growth characteristics, the wide-shading facility model which is suitable for the Gyeonggi-do area is the slope-shading facility II.

Patients were a man who had visited the Middle East, his wife, and a man who shared a hospital room with the index patient. Rapid laboratory confirmation will facilitate subsequent prevention and control for imported cases.</P>

In this study, a length adjustment algorithm for cyclic signals in manufacturing process using Time Invariant Feature point Extraction and Matching(TIFEM) is proposed. In order to precisely compensate the length of cyclic signals which have irregular length in the middle of signal as well as in the full length more feature points are needed. The extracted feature must involve information about the pattern of signal and should have invariant properties on time and scale. The proposed TIFEM algorithm extracts features having the intrinsic properties of the signal characteristics at first. By using those extracted features, feature vector is constructed for each time point. Among those extracted features, the only effective features are filtered and are chosen such as basis for the length adjustment. And then the partial length adjustment is performed by matching feature points. To verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, the experiments were performed with the experimental data mimicking the three kinds of signals generated from the actual semiconductor process.
