Background: Olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, is an economically important aquaculture species in Korea. Olive flounders have been heavily damaged by streptococcal infections every year and are treated with antibiotics. However, antibiotic abuse is causing the emergence of resistant strains, and to overcome this, research has shown that new antibiotics must be applied. Tylosin is a relatively safe antibiotic and has good activity against Gram-positive bacteria and mycoplasma. We studied the therapeutic effects and side effects of tylosin on Streptococcus parauberis-infected olive flounder. Methods: After artificial infection of olive flounder with S. parauberis SPOF18J3, an appropriate dose of tylosin was confirmed by intramuscular injection (I.M.) at 2.5, 5, 10, and 15 mg/kg, and oral administration at 10 and 20 mg/kg. After I.M. and oral administration dosing of tylosin, side effects were confirmed by serological analysis, histopathological analysis, and median lethal dose (LD50) analysis at both an appropriate concentration and a high concentration. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). Results: The appropriate I.M. and oral administration concentration of tylosin administered to olive flounder infected with S. parauberis SPOF18J3 was found to be 10 mg/kg. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were showed not significantly different between the control group and the experimental groups. The histopathologic results showed mild inflammatory responses in muscle and tubular vacuolization and tubular atrophy appeared, but there were no significant differences between the groups. The LD50 was confirmed to be 461 mg/kg. Conclusion: In this study, an effective treatment method was provided by verifying the treatment effects and side effects of tylosin in olive flounder infected with S. parauberis, which can be applied directly to aquaculture sites. In addition, these results may be used as a reference for evaluation required upon request to obtain approval for tylosin antibiotics as fishery antibiotics in Korea. After approval, it is possible that a fishery disease manager will be able to prescribe and sell the antibiotic tylosin.

In this study, it reviewed the effect of moisture migration in concrete with heating rate on concrete spalling. Concrete specimens with compressive strength 30MPa and 110MPa are used and its size is □100×100×h200mm. And, two kinds of heating rate are set such as IS0 834 and 1℃/min. As a result, in the concrete specimen exposed to ISO 834 standard heating condition, moisture could migrate through pore network and surface concrete pieces fall out by generating moisture clog near the surface in 110MPa concrete specimen. Meanwhile, In the case of concrete specimens exposed to 1℃/min. heating condition, it is appeared that moisture could not migrate because temperature is distributed uniformly. Therefore, surface spalling is not occurred with low heating rate. However, in the case of 110MPa concrete specimen is exploded even though it heated by low heating rate.

<P>In this work, medical diagnosis of sepsis was conducted via quantitative analysis of lysophosphatidylcholine 16:0 (LPC 16:0) by using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry based on a parylene-matrix chip. In the first step, specific mass peaks for the diagnosis of sepsis were searched by comparing MALDI-TOF mass spectra of sepsis patient sera with healthy controls and pneumonia patient sera. Two mass peaks at <I>m</I>/<I>z</I> = 496.3 and 518.3 were chosen as those that are specifically different for sepsis sera to compare with healthy controls and pneumonia patient sera. These mass peaks were identified to be protonated and sodium adducts of LPC 16:0 by using tandem mass spectra (MS2 and MS3) of purely synthesized LPC 16:0 and extracted LPC 16:0 from a healthy control and a sepsis patient. In the next step, a standard curve for LPC 16:0 for the quantitative analysis of LPC 16:0 with MALDI-TOF MS based on the parylene-matrix chip was prepared, and the statistical correlation to the LC-MS analysis results was demonstrated by using the Bland-Altman test and Passing-Bablok regression. Finally, MALDI-TOF MS based on the parylene-matrix chip was used for the quantification of LPC 16:0 with sera from patients with severe sepsis and septic shock (<I>n</I> = 143), pneumonia patients (<I>n</I> = 12), and healthy sera (<I>n</I> = 31). The sensitivity and the selectivity of medical diagnosis of sepsis was estimated to be 97.9% and 95.5% by using MALDI-TOF MS based on the parylene-matrix chip, respectively.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find out validity of Surface Electromyography(sEMG) compared with Nerve Conduction Study and clinical assessment scale as assessment factors for facial palsy. Methods: We investigated 50 cases of patients with peripheral facial palsy who had records of sEMG and NCS to check. Then we analyzed the correlation between sEMG and NCS that carried out around 1 week after onset. And we analyzed the correlation between sEMG and clinical assessment scales that were measured three times around 1 week, 3-4 weeks and 5-6 weeks after onset. Clinical assessment scales used in this study were House-brackmann grade, Yanagihara unweighted grading scale and Sunnybrook facial grading system. We used Pearson's correlation for statistical analysis. Results: sEMG and NCS, measured at similar times, were statistically correlated. Especially, the correlation with the forehead region was high. And sEMG and clinical assessment scale, measured at same time, were statistically correlated, especially after 5 weeks from onset. Conclusion: According to this study, sEMG is expected to be useful to assessment facial palsy.
