목적: Our objective was to evaluate the effect of combined use of transient bilateral ovarian artery clamping, uterine artery ligation, and Bakri balloon tamponade during cesarean section in women with placenta previa. 방법: We performed a retrospective cohort study of all cesarean deliveries performed due to placenta previa from April 2013 until June 2016 at Chonbuk National University Hospital. Charts were reviewed to determine the amount of RBC transfusion, degree of blood loss and incidence of postpartum hysterectomy and uterine artery embolization (UAE) between conventional method and combined technique to control hemorrhage during cesarean section for placenta previa. Patients with unsortable technique were excluded. The outcome was analyzed using independent t-test. 결과: There was a total of 118 cesarean deliveries for placenta previa during the study period, with two groups of 100 patients using conventional hemostatic method and 17 patients using combined hemostatic technique. There were not different between two groups in the mean amount of PRC transfusion during operation (0.88 ± 2.12 unit vs. 0.24 ± 0.66 units, respectively, p=0.22) and the index of blood loss (0.22 ± 0.13 vs. 0.23 ± 0.14, respectively, p=0.78). The incidence of postpartum hysterectomies (0.05 ± 0.22 vs. 0 ± 0, respectively, p=0.03) and postpartum care (0.13 ± 0.46 vs. 0 ± 0, respectively, p=0.01) for continuous bleeding after cesarean section were significantly low in combined technique group. 결론: Our findings show that utilization of the combined technique (transient bilateral ovarian artery clamping, uterine artery ligation, and Bakri balloon tamponade) during cesarean section for placenta previa is associated with a decreased rate of postpartum hysterectomy and additional hemostatic procedure after cesarean section.

To identify the diversity of halophilic bacteria from fermented seafoods, 86 strains were isolated and a phylogenetic analysis was carried out based on the results of 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The isolated strains were divided into 3 phyla, 7 families, 9 genera, and 24 species. Bacilli class, the main phyletic group, comprised 84.9% with 4 families, 6 genera, and 19 species of Bacillaceae, Planococcaceae, Staphylococcaceae, and Enterococcaceae. The strains were tested for amylolytic, cellulolytic, lipolytic, and proteolytic activity and 55 strains showed at least one enzyme activity. Furthermore, auxin activity was determined in two strains. These results indicate that the isolated strains have the possibility for application in the food and feed industries and of being important genetic resources in Korea.

국민의 안전을 위해 교통사고를 방지하고자 교통 규제는 계속 확대되고 있지만, 교통사고는 여전히 줄어들지 않고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기상청의 날씨 예측 데이터, 도로교통공단의 요일, 시간대, 장소별 교통사고 발생 데이터, 특정 위치 정보 등 다양한 요인들의 연관관계를 인공지능을 활용하여 분석함으로써 특정 시간, 장소에 대한 교통사고 발생 확률을 예측하고자 한다. 본 연구는 이전의 수많은 교통사고 발생에 대한 객관적인 데이터와 기존의 다른 연구들에서 활용되지 않은 다양한 추가 요소들을 접목시켜 더욱 향상된 교통사고 발생 확률 예측 모델을 도출한다. 본 연구 결과는 국민의 안전한 삶을 위한 다양한 교통 관련 서비스에 유용하게 활용될 수 있을 것이다. Traffic regulations are expanding to prevent traffic accidents for people's safety, but traffic accidents are not decreasing. In this study, the probability of traffic accidents occurring at a specific time and place is estimated by analyzing various factors such as weather forecast data from the Meteorological Agency, day of the week, time of day, location data, and location information. This study combines objective data on the occurrence of numerous previous traffic accidents with various additional elements not considered in previous studies to derive a more improved traffic accident probability prediction model. The results of this study can be effectively used for various transportation-related services for the safety of people.
Genital tract cavernous hemangioma as a rare cause of postpartum hemorrhage

Cavernous hemangiomas rarely involve the female genital tract. It is difficult to identify vascular malformations when these lesions are concealed in the vagina or deep vulva area. We present a rare case of vaginal cavernous hemangioma in a 30-year-old primiparous woman with an early severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and delayed continuous bleeding from the episiotomy site. She was treated successfully with transarterial embolization of the left vaginal artery. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of PPH caused by rupture of a vaginal hemangioma during vaginal delivery in English literature.

Background/Aims: Despite the increasing need for geriatric assessment prior to chemotherapy, the method for this assessment remains inadequate for older cancer patients. We aimed to propose a simple assessment method to predict the performance of adjuvant chemotherapy in older patients after colon cancer surgery. Methods: This prospective study included patients over 65 years of age who were scheduled for adjuvant chemotherapy after colon cancer surgery. Before initiating chemotherapy, their functional status was assessed on the basis of activities of daily living (ADL)/instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). These parameters were analyzed with clinical characteristics and the patterns of adjuvant chemotherapy. The focus was on the completion rate of adjuvant chemotherapy. Results: A total of 89 patients with a median age of 72 years were analyzed. Among them, 54 (61%) were non-impaired and 35 (39%) were impaired regarding their ADL/IADL classification. Low body mass index and impairment of ADL/IADLs were significantly associated with chemotherapy interruption. Among toxicities, fatigue and hand-foot syndrome were independent prognostic factors for chemotherapy interruption. Impairments of ADL/IADL were significantly associated with fatigue regardless of age. Based on age and ADL/IADL stratification, younger patients (≤ 72 years) and/or those who were ADL/IADL non-impaired were significantly more likely to complete adjuvant chemotherapy than older patients (> 72 years) and ADL/IADL impaired patients (p = 0.038). This was regardless of the chemotherapy regimen. Conclusions: Functional assessment using ADL/IADL is a convenient method to predict chemotherapy toxicity and performance. These results suggested that routine screening for ADL/IADLs could guide appropriate patient selection for the completion of adjuvant chemotherapy and predict expected outcomes.

Natural environmental resources are considered a prospective source of microorganisms capable of producing biocatalysts with great potential in industrial areas. Arable soil fertilized with peat moss is a habitat for various microorganisms. The present research focused on the isolation and identification of hydrolase-producing bacteria that thrive at a broad temperature range. In this study, a total of 33 strains were isolated from arable soil fertilized with peat moss (Silla Garden in Busan, South Korea). The isolated bacteria were mesophiles and thermophiles with a wide temperature range. Taxonomic identification showed that the isolated strains belonged to 2 phyla, 5 families, 10 genera, and 24 species. Subsequently, the isolated strains were screened for hydrolase (amylase, lipase, and protease) activity. All isolates possessed activity of at least one enzyme and six bacterial isolates produced combined extracellular enzymes. Diversity of soil bacteria species in the present study suggest the potential of soil bacteria in the various industrial applications.

The growth characterization and enzyme productivity of halotolerant microorganisms isolated from the Nakdong River estuary wetland in Korea were investigated in this study. The isolation of halotolerant microorganisms was carried out through their cultivation at 37℃ for several days using a marine agar medium. After a single-colony isolation, 16 pure colonies were obtained, and phylogenetic analysis was done using 16S-based ID service in the EzBioCloud database. The isolated strains were divided into 3 phyla, 5 families, 7 genera, and 13 species. Possible industrial applications of the strains were confirmed upon testing for amylolytic, lipolytic, and proteolytic activity to confirm the possible production of hydrolytic enzymes, growth at a pH range of 5 to 9, and various salt concentrations being tested. Thirteen strains possessed at least one enzyme activity, and 5 strains possessed 2 enzyme activities. Eight strains could tolerate up to 10% NaCl concentration. This result indicated that isolated strains had shown the possible application in food and cosmetic industries. Therefore, this study would contribute to securing domestic biological resources and improving hydrolytic enzyme activity using these strains.

In order to investigate the electrochemical properties and the particle size effect of LiNi<sub>1-x-y</sub>Co<sub>x</sub>Al<sub>y</sub>O<sub>2</sub> (x=0.15, y=0.045 or 0.05, NCA) for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), two commercial NCA cathode materials (NCA#1, NCA#2) were used as cathode materials for LIB. The average particle size of the NCA#1 which consisted of uniform spherical particles was found to be approximately 5 μm. NCA#2 consisted of particles with bimodal size distribution of approximately 5 μm and 11 μm. From the results of charge-discharge performance test, a high initial discharge capacity of 197.0 mAh/g was obtained with NCA#2, which is a higher value than that with NCA#1. The cycle retentions of NCA#1 and NCA#2 up to 30 cycles were 92% and 94%, respectively.
