Possibility of Acquiring Bancroftian Filariasis on the Kinmen (Quemoy) Islands, Republic of China

In order to determine the possible threat of bancroftian filariasis to military personnel stationed on the Kinmen Islands, 55,606 civilians and 98,670 military personnel were eamined. The microfilarial (mf) rate was much higher in the civilians (9.1%) than in the military personnel (1.1%). The same tendency was also observed in 1952 (19.1% against 5.8%), 1957 (13.9% against 1.4%) adn 1970-3 (8.5% against 0.1%). A total of 1,425 female C. p. quinquefasciatus were collected from 61 villages, and 7.9% were found to be infected with an infection rate of 3.7% and filarial larval density of 6.4. The corresponding figures among 1,471 female C. p. quinquefasciatus in 48 camps were 0.1% adn 1. A total of 15,251 Kinmen Chinese in 34 villages and 6,173 soldiers in 34 neighbourin gcamps were also examined. The mf rate and clinical rate were found much higher in the civilians (11.2% and 22.4%) than those in the military personnel (0.1% and 0%). There was also no significant difference in the rate among the villages located at various distance from the camps. Nocturnal blood samples from 392 students (199 non-Kinmen Chinese and 193 Kinemen Chinese) attending a military training school were examined by the thick blood smear, Knott concentration method and the Millipore membrane filtration technique. In the Kinmen group, 18 were found positive, giving the mf rate of 10% and mf desity of 20 per ml night venous blood. No mf carriers were found among the non-Kinmen gropu. These findings indicate that bancroftian filariasis is not easily transmitted even among persons living very close together. Morevoer, it could be possible that no military personnel acquire filarial infection from the infected civilians for a certain period of 1∼2 yerars on the Kinmen (Quemoy) Islands.
Analysis and Conservation Management on Water Quality in Korea’s Four Major Rivers

The World Future Society warned that the price of water will rival that of oil and that two thirds of the world’s population will suffer from water shortages by 2025. In this study, the general status of water resource, water quality management, policy of water quality management and four major rivers in Korea were showed. Based on these status, we studied the water quality of Han River, Nakdong River, Geum River and Yeongsan River by some targets, for example, biochemical oxygen demand(BOD), total nitrogen(TN), total phosphorus, NO3-N, NH3-N and hazardous materials, from 1999 to 2009 year. During these 10 years, the value of most indexes was controlled in a certain range, though there was some high value exited. It could be considered that the policy of water quality management had been given full scope to the water quality control. Moreover, there were no hazardous materials in all of four major rivers from 1999 to 2009 year. Finally, we put forward some proposals to protect and improve the water quality. 1) establishment of more monitoring networks 2) constitution and improvement of environmental institutions 3) execution of projects for water quality 4) pro-environmental agriculture
The Korean Taenia and Taeniasis

제주도에서는 돼지 낭충증(swine cysticercosis)이 소 낭충증(bovine cysticercosis)보다 훨씬 빈번히 발견되며 주민들도 돼지의 고기와 내장육회를 보다 즐겨 먹고 있는 실정이다. 그러나 주민들에서 무구조충이 유구조충보다 많이 감염되어 있음을 볼 수 있다. 본 조사에서 채집된 충체는 형태학적으로 모두 무구조충이었으며 감염자의 19%는 오직 돼지고기만을 육회로 먹은 바 있다고 하였다. 감염 실험에서도 이 무구조충양(樣) 조충의 중간숙주는 돼지가 소보다도 더욱 역학적 의미가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 실험적 감염에서 발견된 모든 낭충은 돼지의 간에서만 적출되었다. 이로서 한국의 Taenia속 조충은 이미 알려진 Taenia와 T.saginata(African strain) 사이에는 DNA 유형이 현저히 다르다는 사실도 알게되어 한국, 대만 그리고 인도네시아산 Taenia 속 조충은 모드 같은 종으로서 이미 알려진 무구조충과는 다른 신종일 가능성이 있다. 그러나 보다 세밀한 연구가 요망된다.

In this study, AZO thin films prepared by direct current reactive magnetron sputtering using a Zn-Al alloy target and In with varied content were doped through the prefabricated layer doping method in order to optimize their thermoelectric properties. The effects of In content on the room temperature microstructure and thermoelectric properties of the AZO thin films were investigated. It was found that the absolute value of the Seebeck coefficient of the thin films increases stably after In doping and reaches 153 μV·K−1 when the In content is 0.71%. Though the electrical conductivity of In-doped thin films is smaller than those of the un-doped films, the power factor of the thin films shows a significant increase after In doping with a maximum value of 2.22 × 10−4 W·m−1·K−2, which is several times that of the un-doped films.
