A Study on Parameter Estimation for General Aviation Canard Aircraft

This paper presents the procedures used for estimating the stability and control derivatives of a general aviation canard aircraft from flight data. The maximum likelihood estimation method which accounts for both process and measurement noise was used for the flight data analysis of a four seat canard aircraft, the Firefly. Without relying on the parameter estimation method, several aerodynamic derivatives were obtained by analyzing the steady state flight data. A wind tunnel test, a flight test of a 1/4 scaled remotely controlled model aircraft, and the prediction of aerodynamic coefficients using the USAF Stability and Control Digital Data Compendium (DATCOM), Advanced Aircraft Analysis (AAA), and Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) were performed during the development phase of the Firefly and the results were compared with flight determined derivatives of a full scaled flight prototype. A correlation between the results from each method could be used for the design of the canard aircraft as well as for building the aerodynamic database.

<P>Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, with a complex etiology encompassing immunologic responses. AD is frequently associated with elevated serum immunoglobulin (Ig) E levels and is exacerbated by a variety of environmental factors, which contribute to its pathogenesis. However, the etiology of AD remains unknown. Recently, reports have documented the role of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the treatment and prevention of AD in humans and mice. The LAB, Lactobacillus casei (LC), is frequently used in the treatment of AD. To identify the active component of LC, we screened fractions obtained from the ion exchange chromatography of LC extracts. Using this approach, we identified the candidate protein, P14. We examined whether the P14 protein has anti-atopic properties, using both in vitro and in vivo models. Our results showed that the P14 protein selectively downregulated serum IgE and interleukin-4 cytokine levels, as well as the AD index and scratching score in AD-like NC/Nga mice. In addition, histological examination was also effective in mice. These results suggest that the P14 protein has potential therapeutic effects and that it may also serve as an effective immunomodulatory agent for treating patients with AD.</P>

The main purpose of this study is to obtain linear models for the design of automatic flight controller in order to operate the Light Sport Aircraft as unmanned air vehicle. Flight test equipments installed on the aircraft to acquire flight test data are described and maneuvers for practical speed calibration are introduced. Parameters for the linear models of lateral and longitudinal motion are estimated by the Output error method as well as trim data analysis using the flight test data. Simulated data using the estimated parameters is shown to agree well with the measurement data. Estimated parameters obtained for several flight conditions can be used to improve the aerodynamic database of the simulation program.
Design of a Robust Target Tracker for Parameter Variations and Unknown Inputs

This paper describes the procedure to develop a robust estimator design method for a target tracker that accounts for both structured real parameter uncertainties and unknown inputs. Two robust design approaches are combined: the Mini-p-Norm. design method to consider real parameter uncertainties and the $H_{\infty}$ design technique for unknown disturbances and unknown inputs. Constant estimator gains are computed that guarantee the robust performance of the estimator in the presence of parameter variations in the target model and unknown inputs to the target. The new estimator has two design parameters. One design parameter allows the trade off between small estimator error variance and low sensitivity to unknown parameter variations. Another design parameter allows the trade off between the robustness to real parameter variations and the robustness to unknown inputs. This robust estimator design method was applied to the longitudinal motion tracking problem of a T-38 aircraft.
Robust Tracker Design Method Based on Multi-Trajectories of Aircraft

This paper presents a robust tracker design method that is specific to the trajectories of target aircraft. This method assumes that representative trajectories of the target aircraft are available. The exact trajectories known to the tracker enables the incorporation of the exact data in the tracker design instead of the measurement data. An estimator is designed to have acceptable performance in tracking a finite number of different target trajectories with a capability to trade off the mean and maximum errors between the exact trajectories and the estimated or predicted trajectories. Constant estimator gains that minimize the cost functions related to the estimation or prediction error are computed off-line from an iterative algorithm. This tracker design method is applied to the longitudinal motion tracking of target aircraft.
