<P>The incidence rate for scarlet fever in South Korea is rising. During 2008–2015, we collected group A <I>Streptococcus</I> isolates and performed <I>emm</I> and exotoxin genotyping and disk-diffusion antimicrobial tests. Scarlet fever in South Korea was most closely associated with <I>emm</I> types <I>emm</I>4, <I>emm</I>28, <I>emm</I>1, and <I>emm</I>3. In 2015, tetracycline resistance started increasing.</P>
An optimal method for phosphorylation of rare earth chlorides in LiCl-KCl eutectic based waste salt

A study on an optimal method for the phosphorylation of rare earth chlorides in LiCl-KCl eutectic waste salt generated the pyrochemical process of spent nuclear fuel was performed. A reactor with a pitched four blade impeller was designed to create a homogeneous mixing zone in LiCl-KCl eutectic salt. A phosphorylation test of NdCl<SUB>3</SUB> in the salt was carried out by changing the operation conditions (operation temperature, stirring rate, agent injection amount). Based on the results of the test, a proper operation condition (450<SUP>o</SUP>C, 300rpm, 1eq. of phosphorylation agent) for over a 0.99 conversion ratio of NdCl<SUB>3</SUB> to NdPO<SUB>4</SUB> was determined. Under this condition, multi-component rare earth (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Y) chlorides were effectively converted into phosphate forms. It was confirmed that the existing regeneration process of LiCl-KCl eutectic waste salt can be greatly improved and simplified through these phosphorylation test results.
60 GHz SoC/SoP radio system for high data-rate transmission

<P>We present the 60 GHz CMOS and system-on-package (SoP) research activities in Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology for high data-rate and short-range wireless communication. A low-power single-chip resonant frequency CMOS receiver for 60 GHz mobile terminals consists of four-stage current reuse LNA, resistive mixer, Ka-band low-phase noise VCO, high-suppression frequency doubler, and two-stage current reuse drive amplifiers. The receiver conversion gain and input P1dB are −9.5 dB and −12.5 dBm, respectively, with a size of 2.67 × 0.75 mm<SUP>2</SUP> and power consumption of 21.9 mW. The integration and communication tests of a transmitter/receiver (Tx/Rx) radio have been demonstrated at a data rate of 3 Gbps for short-range transmission and with a communication distance of over 3.5 m at 650 Mbps data rate. The design and fabrication of mmW subcircuits, such as low-loss transmission lines and transitions with noble air cavity structures, a high-Q resonator using zigzagged dual-row via posts and a λ/4 short stub, and the monolithic integration of band-pass filter and antennas, have been performed for low-temperature cofired ceramic SoP integration with a size of 37 × 11 mm<SUP>2</SUP> for the whole Tx or Rx radio. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Background and Objectives: Impaired recovery from left ventricular (LV) dysfunction is a major prognostic factor after myocardial infarction (MI). Because P2Y12 receptor blockade inhibits myocardial injury, ticagrelor with off-target properties may have myocardial protection over clopidogrel. In animal models, ticagrelor vs. clopidogrel protects myocardium against reperfusion injury and improves remodeling after MI. We aimed to investigate the effect of ticagrelor on sequential myocardial remodeling process after MI. Methods: High platelet inhibition with ticagrelor to improve LV remodeling in patients with ST-segment elevation MI (HEALING-AMI) is an investigator-initiated, randomized, open-label, assessor-blinded, multi-center trial done at 10 sites in Korea. Patients will be enrolled if they have ST-segment elevation MI (STEMI) treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention and a planned duration of dual antiplatelet treatment of at least 6 months. Screened patients will be randomly assigned (1:1) using an internet-based randomization with a computer-generated blocking with stratification across study sites to either ticagrelor or clopidogrel treatment. The co-primary primary endpoints are LV remodeling index with three-dimensional echocardiography and the level of N-terminal prohormone B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) at 6 months representing post-MI remodeling processes. Changes of LV end-systolic/diastolic volume indices and LV ejection fraction between baseline and 6-month follow-up will be also evaluated. Analysis is per protocol. Conclusions: HEALING-AMI is testing the effect of ticagrelor in reducing adverse LV remodeling following STEMI. Our trial would show the benefit of ticagrelor vs. clopidogrel related to the recovery of post-MI LV dysfunction beyond potent platelet inhibition. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an inducible isoform protein, regulates diverse biological actions in vascular pathophysiology. COX-2 is induced in response to numerous stimuli, which results in prostaglandin (PG) production related to inflammation. Crotonaldehyde (CRA) is an extremely toxic α, β-unsaturated aldehyde and a major compound found in cigarette smoke. α, β-Unsaturated aldehyde in cigarette smoke is thought to mediate inflammation and vascular dysfunction. In this study, we evaluated the effect of CRA stimulation on COX-2 expression in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. CRA-stimulated COX-2 induction was accompanied by enhanced p38 phosphorylation and PGE2 generation. However, CRA-induced PGE2 production was reduced by pretreatment with an inhibitor of p38 MAPK. These results demonstrated that in human endothelial cells, CRA-induced COX-2-dependent PGE2 generation was mediated by p38 MAPK, and CRA may play a role in the development of inflammation.

Cigarette smoke contains approximately 5,000 chemical components, including reactive chemicals and free radicals that are associated with an increased risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Cigarette smoke is also known to promote inflammation as part of various inflammatory airway diseases. Crotonaldehyde (CRA) is a highly toxic α, β-unsaturated aldehyde that is a major component of cigarette smoke. Exposure to CRA has been previously shown to result in adverse effects on respiratory health. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an inducible enzyme that is activated by various stress-inducing stimuli to perform a diverse range of physiological functions, including anti-oxidant, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory effects. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of CRA stimulation on HO-1 expression in human lung adenocarcinoma epithelial (A549) cells. Stimulation of cells with CRA was shown to result in upregulated HO-1 expression via the induction of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) nuclear translocation, and activation of the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. Furthermore, zinc protoporphyrin (ZnPP; a specific HO-1 inhibitor) was used to inhibit HO-1 activity, and this was shown to cause a significant increase in the rate of apoptosis of CRAexposed cells. Taken together, these results suggest that HO-1 exerts an anti-apoptotic effect in CRA-exposed human lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cells, and thus protects cells against CRA-induced oxidative stress.
Burst Locating Capability of the Korean Solar Radio Burst Locator (KSRBL)

The Korean Solar Radio Burst Locator (KSRBL) is a solar radio spectrograph observing the broad frequency range from 0.245 to 18 GHz with the capability of locating wideband gyrosynchrotron bursts. Due to the characteristics of a spiral feed, the beam center varies in a spiral pattern with frequency, making a modulation pattern over the wideband spectrum. After a calibration process, we obtained dynamic spectra consistent with the Nobeyama Radio Polarimeter (NoRP). We compared and analyzed the locations of bursts observed by KSRBL with results from the Nobeyama Radioheliograph (NoRH) and Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA). As a result, we found that the KSRBL provides the ability to locate flaring sources on the Sun within around 2′.
