Turkish student teachers’ attitudes toward teaching in university-based and alternative certification programs in Turkey

Erdem Aksoy 서울대학교 교육연구소 2017 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.18 No.3

The objective of this study is to comparatively analyze the university-based and alternative teacher certification systems in Turkey in terms of the attitudes of trainee teachers toward the teaching profession, explore the reasons of choosing teaching as a career as well as analyze attitudes by gender, department, and graduating faculty type in the frame of dominant ideological and economical paradigms. For the study, rational screening model was used, employing mixed methods research strategy. Participants in the study were 208 trainee teachers from the departments at the faculty of educational sciences and 200 trainee teachers at alternative certification programs at the same university. As a result of this research, it was found that university-based trainee teachers have better attitudes than trainee teachers of alternative certification programs toward the teaching profession and that female trainee teachers in both groups had better attitudes toward the teaching profession. Further, it was found that university-based trainee teachers utilized intrinsic motivators more, whereas trainees at alternative certification programs mainly utilized extrinsic motivators for career choice. Thus, intrinsic motivations of student teachers need to be strengthened as without realizing and emphasizing the divine values and the respectability of the teaching profession, it would be impossible to raise a new generation of teachers with high levels of intrinsic motivation, and the result could be having an army of technicians aiming to earn more money or have a more comfortable life rather than intellectuals who believe in contributing to and making a change in the lives of students.

      • Pilates-Based Training for Postural Stability in Patients with Schizophrenia

Emin Ulaş Erdem(Emin Ulaş Erdem ),Eda Akbas(Eda Akbas ),Banu Ünver(Banu Ünver ) 사피엔시아 2019 Exercise Medicine Vol.3 No.-

Objectives: Impairment in postural stability is prevalent in schizophrenia patients and this poses potential hazards. This study was planned to investigate whether the Pilates-based training improve the postural stability of patients with schizophrenia. Methods: Outpatients with schizophrenia were allocated to either Pilates exercise group (n=10), or control group (n=10) receiving no exercise. Pilates exercise group participated in supervised Pilates mat exercise program twice per week for six weeks, while the control group participated in no regular physical activity during study. Biodex Balance System was used to assess the participants’ postural stability at the baseline and after six weeks. Results: Statistical analysis revealed that Pilates exercise group showed significant improvement in terms of overall and medial/lateral postural stability scores in static condition (p<0.05). Also, overall and anterior/posterior index scores on left leg, overall and medial/lateral index scores on right leg decreased after training (p<0.05). Postural stability scores in dynamic condition, medial/lateral index score on left leg and anterior/posterior index score on right leg did not change in the Pilates exercise group (p>0.05). Conclusions: Our results showed that Pilates-based training benefit and suggest potential particular benefits in terms of postural stability in patients with schizophrenia. Pilates exercise can be added to the rehabilitation program of schizophrenia patients as a safe and effective method. Future research should include comparative exercise groups in order to determine any particular advantage to Pilates-based training in schizophrenia.

Bifunctional Fe-SBA-15-SO3H Mesoporous Catalysts with Different Si/Fe Molar Ratios: Synthesis, Characterization and Catalytic Activity

Erdem, Sezer,Erdem, Beyhan,Oksuzoglu, Ramis Mustafa,Citak, Alime Korean Chemical Society 2013 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.34 No.5

Bifunctional Fe-SBA-15-$SO_3H$ mesoporous materials with different Si/Fe molar ratios (3, 5, and 7) have been synthesized via a simple direct hydrothermal method and characterized by XRD, $N_2$-adsorption/desorption, TG/DTG and FT-IR techniques, and used as solid acid catalysts in the esterification of lactic acid with methanol. XRD and $N_2$ sorption characterizations show successful iron doping within the mesoporous channels of SBA-15-$SO_3H$. The FT-IR and TG/DTG characterizations also reveal the presence of iron. With the incorporation of Fe ions into the SBA-15-$SO_3H$, the acid sites substantially increased because of the self-separated acidity of the hydrolysis of $Fe^{3+}$ solutions. However, in the Si/Fe = 3 molar ratio, the catalytic conversion decreased which is caused by the reduced cooperation effect between the acid pairs due to the weakened hydrogen bonds and collapse of the pore structure. This further suggests that the mesoporous structure decreases with the decrease in Si/Fe ratio.

Effect of Maternal Depression on Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor Levels in Fetal Cord Blood

        Erdem Onder Sonmez,Faruk Uguz,Mine Sahingoz,Gulsum Sonmez,Nazmiye Kaya,Mehmet Akif Camkurt,Zeynel Gokmen,Mustafa Basaran,Kazim Gezginc,Sami Sait Erdem,Hasan Haluk Dulger,Erkan Tasyurek 대한정신약물학회 2019 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.17 No.2

Objective: We aimed to assess the association between cord blood brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) concentration and maternal depression during pregnancy. Methods: A total of 48 pregnant women, admitted for elective caesarean section to Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The Konya Research and Training Hospital and Konya Necmettin Erbakan University Meram Medical Faculty, were included in this study. The study group included 23 women diagnosed as having depression during pregnancy and the control group included 25 pregnant women who did not experience depression during pregnancy. Results: The groups had similar sociodemographic characteristics. Cord blood BDNF concentration was significantly lower in babies born to mothers with major depression as compared with those in the control group. We didn’t find any correlation between the umbilical cord blood BDNF levels and BDI scores. Conclusion: The results suggest that the existence of major depression in pregnant women may negatively affect fetal circulating BDNF levels.

Histological and morphological development of the prepuce from birth to prepubertal age

        Erim Erdem,Mustafa Kaplan Caliskan,Meryem Ilkay Karagul,Erdem Akbay,Banu Coskun Yilmaz,Yuksel Cem Aygun 대한비뇨의학회 2024 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.65 No.2

Purpose: To study the histological changes of the preputial tissue from birth to prepubertal age in order to define unnoticed morphological changes. Materials and Methods: Prepuce samples were obtained from 79 healthy boys who underwent routine ritual circumcision. Specimens were divided into six groups according to the boys’ age: newborn, 0–1 year of age, 2–3 years of age, 4–5 years of age, 6–7 years of age, and 8–9 years of age. Histologic analysis of the specimens was performed by H&E, Masson’s trichrome, Verhoeff–Von Gieson, immunohistochemical staining. Results: Microscopic examinations showed that average epithelial thickness increased after the neonatal period (p=0.001). When collagen fiber density was evaluated, no significant differences between groups were found (p=0.083). When the elastic fibers in the dermis were evaluated, it was determined that the number and thickness of elastic fibers increased with age. Immunohistochemical examinations showed that the number of peripheral nerves marked with S100 was lower in the neonatal period than at other ages (p=0.048). When the vessels marked with CD105 antibody were counted, there was no significant difference between the groups (p=0.078). Conclusions: This is the first study to examine the age-related structure of connective tissue elements in the foreskin. Our results showed that the prepuce’s prepubertal maturation process is continuous, and the first 2 years of life are appropriate not only in relation to the physiological effects of age but also the optimum structural changes for wound healing, such as vessel diameter, epithelium thickness, peripheral nerve count.

Cationic surfactant templated synthesis of magnetic mesoporous nanocomposites for efficient removal of Light Green

Beyhan Erdem,Sezer Erdem,Nalan Tekin 한국화학공학회 2021 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.38 No.7

Fe3O4-SiO2-NH2, Fe3O4-CTABSiO2-NH2 and Fe3O4-SiO2-CTABSiO2-NH2 magnetic adsorbents were successfully prepared and could be used effectively for the adsorption of Light Green from aqueous solutions. Unlike the first sample, mesoporous silica coatings were created using cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide micelles as molecular templates on superparamagnetic iron oxide in one sample, and on silica-coated iron oxide in the other sample to improve the adsorptive properties of the nanocomposites. The characterization by FT-IR, SEM/EDX, Zeta-potential, XRD, VSM, and N2-adsorption/desorption confirmed the production of mesoporous silica layer. Although coating processes with both silica and mesoporous silica layers led to a vaguely decrease in saturation magnetization of the Fe3O4- SiO2-CTABSiO2-NH2, the nanoparticles were protected with silica coatings for environment conditions and made more suitable for subsequent amino functionalization. The results determined from Batch adsorption experiments fitted to Langmuir isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) equal to 56.18, 196.08 and 227.27mg g1, for Fe3O4-SiO2-NH2, Fe3O4-CTABSiO2-NH2 and Fe3O4-SiO2-CTABSiO2-NH2, respectively, and it was seen from the kinetic results, the LG adsorption was identified by pseudo-second-order kinetics, revealing that LG adsorption process is homogeneous, monolayer and based on chemical interactions. According to the results, both silica and mesoporous silica coating strategy can play crucial role in improving the adsorptive properties of nanocomposites.

Does the abdominal ultrasonography reliable in the diagnosis of postoperative pancreatic fistula after pancreaticoduodenectomy in the first postoperative week?

        Erdem Kinaci,Mert Mahsuni Sevinc,Savas Bayrak,Ceyda Turan Bektas,Aytul Hande Yardimci,Abdulkerim Ozakay 대한외과학회 2016 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.91 No.5

Purpose: We evaluated the efficacy of ultrasonography (US) in the early postoperative period after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) to diagnose postoperative-pancreatic-fistula (POPF). Early diagnosis is important to prevent POPF-dependent mortality after PD. The value of radiological modalities for early diagnosing POPF is not clear. Methods: Forty-five patients who underwent transabdominal-US in the first postoperative week after PD were retrospectively evaluated. Two types of grouping methods were performed. Firstly, peripancreatic or perianastomotic fluid collections at least 2 cm in diameter were considered to be a primary positive result on US. Patients then divided into 2 groups: group 1, US-positive and group 2, US-negative. Secondly, to increase the power of US, in addition to primary positive results, the presence of fever, leukocytosis or hyperamylasemia was considered to be a secondary positive result (group 1S). The remaining patients were considered to have secondary negative results (group 2S). The sensitivity and specificity for both grouping methods were calculated for the diagnosis of PF and clinically important PF (ciPF), according to the International Study Group on Pancreatic Fistula criteria. Results: For the first grouping method, the sensitivity was 36% and 28% and the specificity was 80% and 85% for PF and ciPF, respectively. For the second grouping method, the sensitivity was 36% and 29% and the spesificity was 74% and 81% for PF and ciPF, respectively. The unloculated fluid collections were not related to a significant increase in the risk of POPF (P = 0.694). Conclusion: Abdominal-US has low sensitivity and high specificity for the early diagnosis of POPF after PD.

      • Pax Sinica along the Silk Road: Avant-Garde Perspectives on Eurasian Geopolitics

ERDEM, CAGRI Academia Via Serica 2018 Acta Via Serica Vol.3 No.2

Pax Sinica is a historiographical term, modeled after the original phrase Pax Romana. It refers, in Latin, to a Chinese-provided peace which in turn is used to describe an era of peace in East Asia sustained by Chinese hegemony. In historical terms, both the Pax Sinica of the Eastern hemisphere through Han China and the Pax Romana of the Western hemisphere through Rome signified a trans-regional order based on rules and regulations. This orderly world of the Pax Sinica generated a number of positive results such as the intensification of travel, ever-expanding trade relations, an increase in the overall living standards of the populace, the proliferation of cities, and a demographic upsurge in Eurasia along the ancient Silk Road. During this period, China was the dominant civilization not only in the Eastern hemisphere but also in the Middle hemisphere due to its political, economic, military and cultural influence. This paper aims to reintroduce this historiographical term to elucidate the recent Chinese initiatives in Eurasia along the Silk Road to facilitate the integration and connectivity of the continent.
