Use of Artificial Intelligence in Sustainable Agriculture -A Preliminary Analysis

( Egemen Bezci ) 중앙대학교 인문콘텐츠연구소 2019 인공지능인문학연구 Vol.4 No.-

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has great potentials to address the pressing sustainability issues in the Anthropocene epoch. One of the most important use of AI technologies is recognized as its role to increase efficiency of the agricultural production to address poverty, and to reduce the negative environmental impacts. One of the important steps, thus, is to reduce the agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. However, an expert survey conducted as a part of this study warned that the AI applications for agricultural sector could creatr perverse incentives, increase hidden energy costs and ignore the externalities. This article initially surveys the role of the Artificial Intelligence for the agricultural production. Following the initial literature survey, this research provides a basic preliminary empirical data analysis from 73 countries to demonstrate the whether their advancements in AI applications has decoupled their Agricultural Greenhouse gas emissions from the food production.

Roughness Damage Evolution Due to Wire Saw Process

Egemen Teomete 한국정밀공학회 2011 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol. No.

The wire saw process is widely used for silicon wafer production with high yield and low surface damage in solar cell and microelectronics industries. The wire saw process is used to machine brittle materials in the ductile regime where high yield and low surface damage are desired. The wire saw process is also used to cut concrete and rocks in civil engineering. In this study, an experimental parametric study was conducted by varying process parameters to determine surface roughness damage. Ductile regime material removal by trans-granular failure and brittle fracture by inter-granular failure are observed in electron micrographs of the cut surfaces. A damage model that relates the roughness damage to process parameters was derived. The damage model predicts the roughness damage satisfactorily. The model shows that the roughness damage is proportional to the ratio of feed speed to wire speed. Improvement in the efficiency of the process without increasing the roughness damage can be attained by increasing the feed speed proportionally to wire speed. Wire tension does not affect roughness damage. Roughness damage, however, is affected by properties of the wire. Wires having smaller grit radius and small grit spacing cause less roughness damage.

The world began to search for new energy sources with increasing energy demand. Renewable energy sources are as hydropower important for alternative energy. Countries with high hydroelectric potentials continue to work to utilize hydroelectric power plants in the most efficient way. Pumped storage hydropower plants are an important investment to meet the growing energy needs at peak times and to store energy. Although it produces energy in many countries, pumped storage hydropower plants have not begun to be built in Turkey which has high hydroelectric potential. A new era will be opened for energy production in Turkey where a large number of pumped storage hydropower plants projects are in study phase with the construction of pumped storage hydropower plants and first nuclear power plant.

      • Effects of multiple dam projects on river ecology and climate change: Çoruh River Basin, Turkey

Aras, Egemen Techno-Press 2018 Advances in environmental research Vol.7 No.2

Depending on the increased energy needs, a large number of dams have been built around the world. These dams have significant impacts on river ecology and climate change. When the climate change scenarios are examined, it is stated that the annual average temperature in Turkey will increase by 2.5-4 degrees in the future years, the south of the country will be opposed to the severe drought threat, and the northern regions will have a flood risk. In particular, it can be predicted that many dams and dam lakes built in the North of Turkey may increase the impact of climate change. In this study, the effects of the dams constructed in Çoruh basin on climate change are examined. Environmental and ecological problems of dam reservoirs have been examined. As a result of the data received from meteorological stations, it was determined that temperature and rainfall changes in the region. In this direction, solution proposal is presented.

Theoretical and experimental investigation of piezoresistivity of brass fiber reinforced concrete

Aurore Mugisha,Egemen Teomete 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2019 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.23 No.6

Structural health monitoring is important for the safety of lives and asset management. In this study, numerical models were developed for the piezoresistive behavior of smart concrete based on finite element (FE) method. Finite element models were calibrated with experimental data collected from compression test. The compression test was performed on smart concrete cube specimens with 75 mm dimensions. Smart concrete was made of cement CEM II 42.5 R, silica fume, fine and coarse crushed limestone aggregates, brass fibers and plasticizer. During the compression test, electrical resistance change and compressive strain measurements were conducted simultaneously. Smart concrete had a strong linear relationship between strain and electrical resistance change due to its piezoresistive function. The piezoresistivity of the smart concrete was modeled by FE method. Twenty-noded solid brick elements were used to model the smart concrete specimens in the finite element platform of Ansys. The numerical results were determined for strain induced resistivity change. The electrical resistivity of simulated smart concrete decreased with applied strain, as found in experimental investigation. The numerical findings are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Contingent Negative Variation Is Associated with Cognitive Dysfunction and Secondary Progressive Disease Course in Multiple Sclerosis

        Utku Uysal,Fethi Idiman,Egemen Idiman,Serkan Ozakbas,Sirel Karakas,Jared Bruce 대한신경과학회 2014 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.10 No.4

Background and Purpose The relationship between contingent negative variation (CNV),which is an event-related potential, and cognition in multiple sclerosis (MS) has not been examined previously. The primary objective of the present study was thus to determine the association between CNV and cognition in a sample of MS patients. Methods The subjects of this study comprised 66 MS patients [50 with relapsing-remittingMS (RRMS) and 16 with secondary progressive MS (SPMS)] and 40 matched healthy volunteers. A neuropsychological battery was administered to all of the subjects; CNV recordingswere made from the Cz, Fz, and Pz electrodes, and the amplitude and area under the curve(AUC) were measured at each electrode. Results RRMS patients exhibited CNVs with lower amplitudes and smaller AUCs than thecontrols at Pz. SPMS patients exhibited CNVs with lower amplitudes and smaller AUCs thanthe controls, and CNVs with a smaller amplitude than the RRMS patients at both Cz and Pz. After correcting for multiple comparisons, a lower CNV amplitude at Pz was significantly associated with worse performance on measures of speed of information processing, verbal fluency, verbal learning, and verbal recall. Conclusions CNV may serve as a marker for disease progression and cognitive dysfunctionin MS. Further studies with larger samples and wider electrode coverage are required to fullyassess the value of CNV in these areas.

Epidural Hematoma after Minor Trauma on Patient with Biparietal Osteodystrophy

Yilmaz, Muhammet Bahadir,Egemen, Emrah,Ozbakir, Bora,Tekiner, Ayhan The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2013 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.53 No.1

Thinning of parietal bone bilaterally is extremely rare but well known phenomenon. Approximate prevalence is 0.4-0.5% according to radiological scans, case reports and anthropologic researches. Even though biparietal osteodystrophy occurs mostly in over 60-year-old women, it shows no special association with race or geographical area tendency. Current definition was changed by understanding that is a pathological situation, not an anatomical variety or result of growing old in time. Biparietal osteodystrophy may have an unusual presentation and treatment still remains unclear. We aim to present a patient with biparietal osteodystrophy associated with minor head trauma that caused parietal fracture and epidural hematoma underneath.

Small State Intelligence: New Zealand in SEATO Security Affairs

        İ. Aytaç Kadıoğlu,Egemen B. Bezci 인하대학교 국제관계연구소 2020 Pacific Focus Vol.35 No.1

This article aims to shed light on how and why small states enter into cooperation alliances with greater powers. It does so by assessing the intelligence and security cooperation activities of New Zealand in the Pacific basin as a small state during the Cold War era. It also assesses its relationships with the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States, as well as its role within the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO), an understudied international organization operating for collective defense. The article offers a threefold analysis involving financial costs, the quest for shelter and diversification. It argues that New Zealand utilized its alliance relationships with SEATO members to seek shelter and gain information with limited expenditure and less effort. Using original data from the archives of New Zealand and the UK, the article reveals that New Zealand's foreign and security policy commitments in the Pacific were shaped by the country's geographical remoteness and the limitations of its diplomatic capacity.
