Clinical Features and Management of Snake Bites in 70 Dogs in Korea

Background: Snakebites remain a devastating and life-threatening environmental hazard. While the management of snakebites has been well described in humans, few clinical data and guidelines exist for dogs, especially in Korea. Objectives: This retrospective study evaluated the clinical features of 70 dogs with snakebite wounds in Korea. Methods: The medical records of 72 dogs that presented to three animal hospitals from June 2008 to July 2021 were reviewed; among these, 70 dogs that met the inclusion criteria were enrolled. Their signalment, history, clinical signs, physical examination, blood analysis, treatment, and prognosis were also evaluated. Results: Of 70 dog owners, 35 (50%) witnessed the bite, with a mean time between bite and hospital presentation of 9.7 ± 4.1 h in 58 dogs. Blood smears were evaluated in 45 dogs, of which 28 (62%) showed echinocytosis. Anemia and acute kidney injury were found in 21 (29%) and 2 dogs (3%), respectively. A total of 37 dogs (53%) were hospitalized, 5 (7%) of which died. Conclusions: The most significant finding was the high prevalence of echinocytosis. The data from this retrospective study could inform the management of dogs bitten by snakes in Korea.

<P><B>Summary</B></P> <P>Membrane-associated mucin domain-containing glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor proteins (MDGAs) bind directly to neuroligin-1 (NL1) and neuroligin-2 (NL2), thereby respectively regulating excitatory and inhibitory synapse development. However, the mechanisms by which MDGAs modulate NL activity to specify development of the two synapse types remain unclear. Here, we determined the crystal structures of human NL2/MDGA1 Ig1-3 complex, revealing their stable 2:2 arrangement with three interaction interfaces. Cell-based assays using structure-guided, site-directed MDGA1 mutants showed that all three contact patches were required for the MDGA’s negative regulation of NL2-mediated synaptogenic activity. Furthermore, MDGA1 competed with neurexins for NL2 via its Ig1 domain. The binding affinities of both MDGA1 and MDGA2 for NL1 and NL2 were similar, consistent with the structural prediction of similar binding interfaces. However, MDGA1 selectively associated with NL2, but not NL1, in vivo. Critically reviewing Chomsky’s (2001, 2004~2005) [Spec, TP] approach to the expletive there, this paper argues for Kim and Lee’s (2004) proposal that expletive there externally merges in [Spec, υP], which is supported by the complementarity of Object Shift and Transitive Expletive Construction, as observed in Richards and Biberauer (2005). [Spec, υP] analysis is shown to have advantages over [Spec, TP] analysis with respect to the following: There, merged in [Spec, υP], raises to [Spec, TP] like any other formal subject. Since [Spec, υP] is in T’s c-command domain, there can be probed and valued by T like any other nominal. And, like other nominals, it is rendered active by a Case feature. There is, therefore, no need to assume that its defective ø-set is unvalued: its [Person]-feature has default, third-person value, hence it is not entitled to be a probe, contra Chomsky (2005). If there merges inside T’s Agree domain, then the EPP problem in Chomsky’s analysis is also naturally overcome, since it satisfies T’s EPP via Move in the same way that nominal arguments do. In the current analysis, [Person]-feature of there being interpretable, there is no need to assume, contra Kim and Lee (2004), that there enters Agree with its associate. The Case features of the expletive and its associate are valued via multiple Agree with T, which implies that the two share the same Case. As for the locus of Merge-there, it is argued that there is allowed to merge in [Spec, υP], provided that this position is not occupied by a thematic element (an external argument or causing event). On the observation that only a subset of un-accusative verbs allows there-construction, we specify this to be the specifiers of non-inchoative unaccusatives.

In this study, dynamic stiffness analysis and static stiffness analysis were conducted by using nonlinear finite element analysis program and linear finite element analysis respectively to compare the results and to confirm reliability about results of nonlinear finite element analysis program. First, dynamic stiffness analysis has been performed on side out panel, crash box, sub-frame and BIW(Body In White) that has been connected with front bumper, rear bumper and sub-frame. Second, static stiffness analysis has been conducted on crash box and hood that has been modeled with spot weld elements and rigid body elements. Consequently, differences of dynamic and static stiffness analysis results through nonlinear finite element analysis program and linear finite element analysis were below 6 % but difference was more than 6 % as to dynamic stiffness of BIW.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Electronic textiles (e-textiles) need to have high heat durability for various applications. However, current e-textiles are usually damaged by high-temperature processes. We report silk-based e-textiles fabricated by simple pyrolysis with axial stretching that demonstrate high electrical conductivity and thermal durability. The electrical conductivity of the proposed e-textiles was on the order of 10<SUP>3</SUP>S/cm and the electrical characteristics were maintained even after heating and bending. Furthermore, we prepared e-textiles with various electronic properties, such as semiconducting, superconducting, and light-emitting properties, by depositing ZnO, MoSe<SUB>2</SUB>, and NbN onto the commercial silk-based e-textiles using sputtering and evaporation. We introduced a simple method for fabricating silk-based e-textiles with various electronic properties, which are compatible with the current textile industry.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

In this paper, we argue that defective T is devoid of EPP-feature, and that the weak expletive there bears Case feature. On the observation that the target of Move or Merge for the purpose of satisfying the EPP of T is invariably a Case marked position, we propose to reduce the EPP-feature to Case checking requirement. The proposed analysis has advantages of eliminating the Merge over Move Preference and redundancy in EPP and Case checking.
