Comprehensive Analysis of Turbo TCM over Two Typical Channels

In this paper, system performance of turbo trellis coded modulation (turbo TCM) is presented and analyzed through computer simulations over two typical channels, namely additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading channels. We use and compare different mapping strategies based on Ungerboeck partitioning (UP), block partitioning (BP), mixed partitioning (MP), Gray partitioning (GP), and Ungerboeck-Gray partitioning (UGP) of the signal constellation of the turbo TCM system. Furthermore, taking 8PSK modulation of turbo TCM as an example, our simulation results show that turbo TCM with UP can obtain better performance than turbo TCM with BP, MP, GP, and UGP in both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels.
Modeling and Performance Analysis of MAC Protocol for WBAN with Finite Buffer

The IEEE 802.15.6 standard is introduced to satisfy all the requirements for monitoring systems operating in, on, or around the human body. In this paper, analytical models are developed for evaluating the performance of the IEEE 802.15.6 CSMA/CA-based medium access control protocol for wireless body area networks (WBAN) under unsaturation condition. We employ a three-dimensional Markov chain to model the backoff procedure, and an M/G/1/K queuing system to describe the packet queues in the buffer. The throughput and delay performances of WBAN operating in the beacon mode are analyzed in heterogeneous network comprised of different user priorities. Simulation results are included to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed analytical model.
Novel Trellis-Coded Spatial Modulation over Generalized Rician Fading Channels

In this paper, a novel trellis-coded spatial modulation (TCSM) design method is presented and analyzed. Inspired by the key idea of trellis-coded modulation (TCM), the detailed analysis is firstly provided on the unequal error protection performance of spatial modulation constellation. Subsequently, the Ungerboeck set partitioning rule is proposed and applied to develop a general method to design the novel TCSM schemes. Different from the conventional TCSM approaches, the novel one based on the Ungerboeck set partitioning rule has similar properties as the classic TCM, which has simple but effective code design criteria. Moreover, the novel designed schemes are robust and adaptive to the generalized Rician fading channels, which outperform the traditional TCSM ones. For examples, the novel 4-, 8-, and 16-state TCSM schemes are constructed by employing different transmit antennas and different modulation schemes in different channel conditions. Simulation results clearly demonstrate the advantages of the novel TCSM schemes over the conventional ones.
Non‐linear chirp based UWB waveform design for suppression of NBI

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>In order to alleviate the narrowband interference (NBI) to ultra wideband (UWB) systems, we propose two non‐linear UWB chirp waveforms based on the <I>arctrigonometric</I> and <I>archyperbolic</I> function in this paper. The proposed UWB pulses can obtain good performance in NBI suppression. Both of the two chirp pulses require only the time domain processing because of the inherent relationship between the frequency domain and the time domain. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the direct sequence pulse binary amplitude modulation (DS‐BPAM) UWB systems with the proposed chirp waveforms can achieve excellent NBI suppression performance and outperform the linear chirp waveform based UWB system significantly. Cross-Layer Cooperative Scheduling Scheme for Multi-channel Hybrid Ubiquitous Sensor Networks

The multi-scenario topology of multi-channel hybrid ubiquitous sensor networks (USNs) is studied and a novel link auto-diversity cross-layer cooperative scheduling scheme is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme integrates the attributes of the new performance evaluation link auto-diversity air-time metric and the topology space in the given multi-scenario. The proposed scheme is compared with other schemes, and its superiority is demonstrated through simulations. The simulation results show that relative energy consumption, link reception probability, and end-to-end blocking probability are improved. The addressing ratio of success with unchanged parameters and external information can be increased. The network can tolerate more hops to support reliable transportation when the proposed scheme is implemented. Moreover, the scheme can make the network stable. Therefore, the proposed scheme can enhance the average rate performance of the hybrid USN and stabilize the outage probability.

Fucoxanthin (FX) is a carotenoid with antioxidant, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer and antibacterialactivities. It is poorly water soluble and highly sensitive to light, heat and the surrounding environment. Therefore, how to effectively encapsulate it and stabilize it for entry into the human body hasbecome a key research question at present. This study developed a single-carrier to encapsulate FX andshowed excellent characterization results. The experimental results showed that the diameters of FX-ZHparticles prepared by the four encapsulation processes ranged from 143.83 to 216.93 nm. Comparison ofantioxidant activity and stability to temperature and pH of the four complexes showed significant differences,with the best performance of the nanoparticles prepared using water-soluble method and a slowspeedstirrer. The nanocomplexes were proved to be more stable and more bioavailable, with a significant34.41% increase in FX content relative to free FX in the intestinal phase. Inhibition of human leukaemiacells HL-60 cells remained high, with 11.14% ± 6.03% inhibition at FX concentrations of 1 lg/mL. Thisstudy encapsulated FX based on colloidal nanoparticle systems for the first time using a single-carriermaterial, an innovation and breakthrough that could simplify the experimental steps and provide thenecessary basis for industrial realization.
Association between Alanine Aminotransferase and Intracerebral Hemorrhage in East Asian Populations

<P>Abstract</P><P><B><I>Background:</I></B> Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and chronic liver disease are relatively common in East Asian countries. However, the relationship between the two diseases is unclear. Thus, we investigated the association between serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels and ICH risk in East Asian populations. <B><I>Methods:</I></B> The East Asian Network for Stroke Prevention enrolled 279,982 participants with ALT measurements from four cohort studies in Korea, Taiwan, Japan and mainland China. Among them, 1,324 ICH events and 493 ICH deaths were observed. Cox's proportional hazard regression analysis was performed in each cohort to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) after adjusting for age, blood pressure, diabetes, total cholesterol, smoking and alcohol intake. Combined HRs were then estimated using pooled analyses with fixed-effects models. <B><I>Results:</I></B> The multivariate-adjusted pooled HRs (with 95% confidence interval, CI) for ICH incidence per 10 IU/l increments of ALT were 1.04 (1.03-1.04) in men and 1.01 (0.98-1.04) in women. Corresponding HRs for ICH mortality were 1.04 (1.02-1.05) in men and 1.04 (1.00-1.08) in women. The pooled HRs for ICH incidence in participants with ALT levels greater than or equal to 50 IU/l compared to those with levels less than 20 IU/l were 1.74 (1.41-2.16) in men and 1.60 (1.06-2.40) in women. The corresponding HRs for ICH mortality were 1.72 (1.21-2.44) in men and 1.63 (0.79-3.36) in women. <B><I>Conclusions:</I></B> An elevated ALT level was independently and significantly associated with an increased risk of ICH in East Asian men, but the association was less prominent in women.</P><P>© 2013 S.
