The effects of the ⁴He interfacial layer on the average superfluid fraction (pdp) were measured as a function of temeperature, pressure, and poresize by means of fourth sound propagation. Up to a pore size dependent threshold ⁴He coverage. pdp remain equal tl those for pure ³He. Beyond the threshold. pdp rapidly increase as ⁴He coverage is increased. The enhancements vanish at pressure greater than some critical pressures depending on ⁴He thickness and pore size.

Thermomechanical pulp (TMP) and chemical thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) of kenaf cultivated in Korea were manufactured and their fiber properties were investigated. TMP made of the core part of kenaf showed various geometric types of fibers such as rectangular, spindle, and cylindrical forms. The most TMP made of the outer part of kenaf were composed of bast fibers, where no damages on the surface and cutting section of bast fibers was found. CTMP made of the core showed that some fibers were damaged. However, the fibers in CTMP made of the bast were observed not to be damaged. The TMP made of the core showed sound fibers, but the CTMP made of the core showed some damaged fibers. The TMP made of the bast showed curl indexes higher than the CTMP made of the bast, and most of fibers were not damaged in both TMP and CTMP pulps.

This study was performed to investigate the effect of wax layer of bamboo on leaching of boron compounds. The removal of wax layer increased the loading of boron on bamboo surface. However, it had an effect on increasing the leaching rates of boron compounds during leaching test. The addition of water repellent retarded leaching of boron compounds to some extent from treated samples. Although borate/WRP system did not qualify borate treated wood for ground contact use, it showed a potential to improve performance of borate treated bamboo in above-ground applications not subjected to continuous wetting conditions.

To investigate the antimicrobial effects of essential oil in the leaves of Chamaecyparis obtusa extractives by paper disc method, the extractives were fractionated into four portions. In antimicrobial test, essential oil in the leaves of Chamaecyparis obtusa was found to have strong inhibitory effects against the growth of Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. A part of analyzed inhibition components of essential oil in the leaves of Chamaecyparis obtusa from GC-MS was supposed to be α,β-pinene, α-terpinolene, camphor, β-myrcene, 1-α-terpinolene, 4-thujen-2-α-yl, limonene, Cardinene.

In proportional counters the amount of ionization per discharge is a function of the primary ionization as well as of the tube characteristics and operating conditions. This paper described a construction for gas-flow proportional counter and pre-amp with use of domestic propane gas. Using propane gas in this gas-flow counter, the slope of plateau was 2.2%/100V, plateau regions were 4100∼4500V, operating voltage was 4300V and counting efficiency was 11.2%. We found that the possibility of constructing an efficient transisterlized gas-flow type proportional counter using inexpensive domestic propane gas.

Titanium thin film was deposited on the chemically etched (100) surface of silicon single crystal by the vacuum evaporation. The interfacial oxide was grown by ramp heating. The Ti/p-Si solar cells have shown good rectification properties with the 0.78V built-in potential and the 20μA/㎠ reverse saturation current density in dark. The best cell have 0.58V open circuit voltage, 38.0 mA/㎠ short circuit photocurrent density, 0.64 fill factor and 13.9% energy conversion efficiency under 100mW/㎠ tungsten halogen lamp irradiation. Therefore, this solar cell is very promising one, but the life testing is not performed yet in our laboratory.

Background/Aims: To analyze the incidence and risk factors of outcomes after liver transplantation (LT) in the Korean population. Methods: This study analyzed data from the liver cohort of Korean Organ Transplantation Registry (KOTRY) who had LT between May 2014 and December 2017. Study measures included the incidence of post-LT outcomes in recipients of living donor LT (LDLT) and deceased donor LT (DDLT). Cox multivariate proportional hazards model was used to determine the potential risk factors predicting the outcomes. Results: A total of 2,563 adult recipients with LT (LDLT, n=1,956; DDLT, n=607) were included, with mean±standard deviation age of 53.9±8.9 years, and 72.2% were male. The post-LT outcomes observed in each LDLT and DDLT recipients were death (4.0% and 14.7%), graft loss (5.0% and 16.1%), rejection (7.0% and 12.0%), renal failure (2.7% and 13.8%), new onset of diabetes (12.5% and 15.4%), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence (both 6.7%). In both LDLT and DDLT recipients, the most common post-LT complications were renal dysfunction (33.6% and 51.4%), infection (26.7% and 48.4%), and surgical complication (22.5% and 23.9%). Incidence of these outcomes were generally higher among recipients of DDLT than LDLT. Multivariate analysis indicated recipient age and DDLT as significant risk factors associated with death and graft loss. DDLT and ABO incompatible transplant were prognostic factors for rejection, and HCC beyond Milan criteria at pre-transplant was a strong predictor of HCC recurrence. Conclusions: This study is a good indicator of the post-LT prognosis in the Korean population and suggests a significant burden of post-LT complications. (Clin Mol Hepatol 2021;27:451-462)

Background/Aims: It is suggested that the hepatic lipid composition is more important than lipid quantity in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. We examined whether lipoic acid (LA) could alter intrahepatic lipid composition and free cholesterol distribution. Methods: HepG2 cells were cultured with palmitic acid (PA) with and without LA. Apoptosis, changes of the mitochondrial structure, intracellular lipid partitioning, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity were measured. Results: Free fatty acid (FA) increased apoptosis, and LA co-treatment prevented this lipotoxicity (apoptosis in controls vs PA vs PA+LA, 0.5% vs 19.5% vs 1.6%, p<0.05). LA also restored the intracellular mitochondrial DNA copy number (553±33.8 copies vs 291±14.55 copies vs 421±21.05 copies, p<0.05) and reversed the morphological changes induced by PA. In addition, ROS was increased in response to PA and was decreased in response to LA co-treatment (41,382 relative fluorescence unit [RFU] vs 43,646 RFU vs 41,935 RFU, p<0.05). LA co-treatment increased the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated FA concentrations and decreased the total saturated FA fraction. It also prevented the movement of intracellular free cholesterol from the cell membrane to the cytoplasm. Conclusions: LA opposes free FA-generated lipotoxicity by altering the intracellular lipid composition and free cholesterol distribution. (Gut Liver 2013;7:221-227)
