Objectives: The purpose of this study is to compare the postoperative stability of conventional orthognathic surgery to a surgery-first orthognathic approach after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO). Materials and Methods: The study included 20 patients who underwent BSSRO for skeletal class III conventional orthognathic surgery and 20 patients who underwent a surgery-first orthognathic approach. Serial lateral cephalograms were analyzed to identify skeletal changes before surgery (T0), immediately after surgery (T1), and after surgery (T2, after 1 year or at debonding). Results: The amount of relapse of the mandible in the conventional orthognathic surgery group from T1 to T2 was 2.23±0.92 mm (P<0.01) forward movement and -0.87±0.57 mm (non-significant, NS) upward movement on the basis of point B and 2.54±1.37 mm (P<0.01) forward movement and -1.18±0.79 mm (NS) upward movement on the basis of the pogonion (Pog) point. The relapse amount of the mandible in the surgery-first orthognathic approach group from T1 to T2 was 3.49±1.71 mm (P<0.01) forward movement and -1.78±0.81 mm (P<0.01) upward movement on the basis of the point B and 4.11±1.93 mm (P<0.01) forward movement and -2.40±0.98 mm (P<0.01) upward movement on the basis of the Pog. Conclusion: The greater horizontal and vertical relapse may appear because of counter-clockwise rotation of the mandible in surgery-first orthognathic approach. Therefore, careful planning and skeletal stability should be considered in orthognathic surgery.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anti-cancer activity of cisplatin by studying its effects on cell viability and identifying the mechanisms underlying the induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines with varying p53 mutation status. Materials and Methods: Three OSCC cell lines, YD-8 (p53 point mutation), YD-9 (p53 wild type), and YD-38 (p53 deletion) were used. To determine the cytotoxic effect of cisplatin, MTS assay was performed. The cell cycle alteration and apoptosis were analyzed using flow cytometry. Western blot analysis was used to detect the expression of cell cycle alteration- or apoptosis-related proteins as well as p53. Results: Cisplatin showed a time- and dose-dependent anti-proliferative effect in all cell lines. Cisplatin induced G2/M cell accumulation in the three cell lines after treatment with 0.5 and 1.0 μg/mL of cisplatin for 48 hours. The proportion of annexin V-FITC-stained cells increased following treatment with cisplatin. The apoptotic proportion was lower in the YD-38 cell line than in the YD-9 or YD-8 cell lines. Also, immunoblotting analysis indicated that p53 and p21 were detected only in YD-8 and YD-9 cell lines after cisplatin treatment. Conclusion: In this study, cisplatin showed anti-cancer effects via G2/M phase arrest and apoptosis, with some difference among OSCC cell lines. The mutation status of p53 might have influenced the difference observed among cell lines. Further studies on p53 mutation status are needed to understand the biological behavior and characteristics of OSCCs and to establish appropriate treatment.

Generated axial force (GAF) due to internal friction of driveshaft joint is one of the causes generating the shudder of vehicle. It also causes vibration problem on steering wheels of vehicles during idling. In this study, automated test machine is developed to precisely measure the GAF caused by internal friction in constant velocity joints. As the developed machine can control the temperature of joint, loading torque, angle of rotation and joint angles, actual vehicle driving condition can be applied. In order to validate the developed constant velocity joint tester, GAF is compared by using different types of grease in tripod joints. Also GAF is measured for both on new and used constant velocity joints to be compared and analyzed. The test result shows the repeatability and consistency of the test machine in terms of the different test conditions. By using the constant velocity joint tester, friction performance of the joint can be evaluated by proposing the best constant velocity joints as well as greases generating lowest GAF.

이 연구에서는 최근 급격히 상승하고 있는 철근가격에 적절히 대응하기 위하여 세그먼트의 철근량을 줄일 수 있도록 고안되었으며, 3가지 철근상세에 대한 실대형 하중가력실험을 통하여 제안공법의 구조성능을 검증하였다. 실험결과, 세가지 형태의 실험체 모두 현행설계기준을 만족하였다. 그 중, 사다리형 철근상세를 적용한 실험체가 철근량이 감소함과 동시에 가장 뛰어난 성능을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. New shear reinforcement details were developed in this study for more economical application of precast segmental tunnel system, where existing typical stirrup, prefabricated-truss, and vierendeel truss were adopted. Full-scale loading tests were conducted on precast segment units with three different shear reinforcement details under a simply-supproted condition. Test results showed that all the specimens fully satisfied the structural performances required in current design code, and it also reveals that the segment specimen with vierendeel truss details can improve constructability and performance in terms of strength and deformational capacity compared to those with existing details.

The object of this study is meaningful for the national aerobic gymnastic players in the review of de-socialization process by retirement and re-socialization process experiencing in the adaptation process for the 2nd vocation through surveying, describing, and analyzing the retirement process and social adaption process of them. The results deduced out of such research process are as follows. First, the motive for the national players starting the workout in the initial stage getting into the aerobic gymnastic world has appeared to be the suggestion of acquaintances, own interest, or purpose to enter the university. Second, the reasons of retiring from the national aerobic gymnastic players, in the stepdown stage from the top, have appeared compositively with various factors of injury, military service, etc. For the national aerobic gymnastic players, third, it has shown that some players had prepared preliminarily for entering the new world, but there are other players who had not at all prepared for the new profession in the vocation preparing process after retirement.

<P>We evaluated the correlations between BMI, fasting glucose, insulin, testosterone level, insulin resistance, and prostate size in non-diabetic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients with normal testosterone levels. Data from 212 non-diabetic BPH patients with normal testosterone levels, who underwent transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) due to medical treatment failure, were evaluated retrospectively. Patients with prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels of ≥ 3 ng/mL underwent multicore transrectal prostate biopsy before TURP to rule out prostate cancer. Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) or serum testosterone levels of < 3.50 ng/mL were excluded from analysis. Correlations between clinical and laboratory parameters were determined. Prostate size correlated positively with age (<I>r</I> = 0.227, <I>P</I> < 0.001), PSA (<I>r</I> = 0.510, <I>P</I> < 0.001), and fasting glucose level (<I>r</I> = 0.186, <I>P</I> = 0.007), but not with BMI, testosterone, insulin level, or insulin resistance (each P > 0.05). Testosterone level inversely correlated with BMI (<I>r</I> = -0.327, <I>P</I> < 0.001), insulin level (<I>r</I> = -0.207, <I>P</I> = 0.003), and insulin resistance (<I>r</I> = -0.221, <I>P</I> = 0.001), but not with age, prostate size, PSA, or fasting glucose level (each <I>P</I> > 0.05). Upon multiple adjusted linear regression analysis, prostate size correlated with elevated PSA (<I>P</I> < 0.001) and increased fasting glucose levels (<I>P</I> = 0.023). In non-DM BPH patients with normal testosterone levels, fasting glucose level is an independent risk factor for prostate hyperplasia.</P>

선도적 기초원천연구 및 산업 연구개발 지원을 위해 세계 최고 수준의 다목적 방사광가속기 구축사업이 본격적으로 추진될 예정이다. 방사광가속기는 반도체, 소재, 바이오, 물리, 화학뿐만 아니라 지질환경과학 분야에도 많이 활용되고 있다. 본 발표에서는 방사광가속기를 활용한 다양한 연구분야의 소개와 함께 지질환경과학 분야의 국내외 연구 사례 등에 대해 소개하고자 한다. 또한, 방사광가속기 뿐만 아니라, 중이온가속기, 양성자가속기 등의 대형가속기를 활용한 국내외 연구 사례 및 다양한 활용 연구 분야 등에 대해서도 소개하고자 한다.
Heat stress during summer reduced the ovarian aromatase expression of sows in Korea

It has been addressed that heat stress due to high atmospheric temperature during summer in Korea induces impaired release of reproductive hormones, followed by occurring abnormal ovarian cyclicity, lower pregnancy ratio, and reduced litter size. Therefore, the present study attempted to compare seasonal change (spring versus summer) of the ovarian aromatase expression, an enzyme for converting testosterone into estrogen. While serum estrogen level in summer group was significantly lower than that of spring group, testosterone was not different between groups. Consistent with estrogen level, the ovarian aromatase expression in summer at follicular phase was significantly lower than the counterpart of spring. The ovarian aromatase expression was positively related with serum estrogen level significantly (r=0.689; P =0.008) and strongly negative correlation was identified (r=−0.533; P=0.078) with atmospheric temperature. The ovarian aromatase expression was not detected in immature ovarian follicles but specifically localized in the granulosa cell layers in both seasons. However, the aromatase intensity in the granulosa cell layers was stronger in spring than summer. Because testosterone level was not different between groups, it could be concluded that the lower level of estrogen during summer might be derived by not lack of substrate but lower expression of ovarian aromatase by heat stress.
