Extraocular Muscles Involvement as the Initial Presentation in Metastatic Breast Cancer
Inês Coutinho,Marco Marques,Rui Almeida,Sofia Custódio,Teresa Simões Silva,Fernanda Águas 한국유방암학회 2018 Journal of breast cancer Vol.21 No.3
Orbital metastasis is a rare event, and metastatic disease affecting the extraocular muscles is an even less frequent complication of solid tumors. Herein, we report an unusual case of ptosis as the initial presentation of an invasive breast cancer. A 68-yearold woman presented with III and VI partial nerve paresis, secondary to a compressive retrobulbar mass. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an infiltrative lesion involving the extraocular muscles. Tissue biopsy yielded a result compatible with metastasis to the orbit, with immunohistochemistry analysis suggesting breast as the primary organ. Mammography identified an area of architectural distortion; stereotactic wire-guided biopsy confirmed the result of the previous orbital biopsy. A positron emission tomography scan demonstrated disseminated disease. Palliative chemotherapy with bone-modulating agents and subsequent hormonal therapy was proposed. Unfortunately, the patient did not respond to therapy and died 38 months after diagnosis.
Potentiation of Antibiotic Activity by Eugenia uniflora and Eugenia jambolanum
Henrique D.M. Coutinho,Jose´ G.M. Costa,Vivyanne S. Falca˜o-Silva,Jose´ P. Siqueira-Ju´nior,Edeltrudes O. Lima 한국식품영양과학회 2010 Journal of medicinal food Vol.13 No.4
This is the first report about the modifying antibiotic activity of Eugenia uniflora L. and Eugenia jambolanum L. In this study the ethanol extract of E. uniflora and E. jambolanum was tested for their antimicrobial activity against strains of Escherichia coli. The growth of the two strains of E. coli bacteria tested was not inhibited in a clinically relevant form by the extract. The minimal inhibitory concentration was ≥1,024μg/mL for both strains of E. coli assayed. Synergism between this extract and gentamicin was demonstrated. In the same extract synergism was observed between chlorpromazine and kanamycin and between amikacin and tobramycin, indicating the involvement of an efflux system in the resistance to these aminoglycosides. It is therefore suggested that extracts from E. uniflora L. and E. jambolanum L. could be used as a source of plant-derived natural products with modifying antibiotic activity to gentamicin.

This paper presents a study to observe playful interaction of children with the prototype version of the robotic toy Vrum-play. Vrum-play is a robotic toy for children designed using two objects with two distinct purposes: a toy in the shape of a car, and a projector as the headlights of the toy car. The project aims to observe creative usages of an augmented reality play-space. We present the development process of our design, the result of our user studies, a prototype and finally we discuss the implications of the outcomes to inform further development of the Play- Space.
The rs2304256 Polymorphism in TYK2 Gene Is Associated with Protection for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Felipe Mateus Pellenz,Cristine Dieter,Guilherme Coutinho Kullmann Duarte,Luís Henrique Canani,Bianca Marmontel de Souza,Daisy Crispim 대한당뇨병학회 2021 Diabetes and Metabolism Journal Vol.45 No.6
Background: Tyrosine kinase 2 (TYK2) is a candidate gene for type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) since it plays an important role in regulating apoptotic and pro-inflammatory pathways in pancreatic β-cells through modulation of the type I interferon signaling pathway. The rs2304256 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in TYK2 gene has been associated with protection for different autoimmune diseases. However, to date, only two studies have evaluated the association between this SNP and T1DM, with discordant results. This study thus aimed to investigate the association between the TYK2 rs2304256 SNP and T1DM in a Southern Brazilian population. Methods: This case-control study comprised 478 patients with T1DM and 518 non-diabetic subjects. The rs2304256 (C/A) SNP was genotyped by real-time polymerase chain reaction technique using TaqMan minor groove binder (MGB) probes. Results: Genotype and allele frequencies of the rs2304256 SNP differed between T1DM patients and non-diabetic subjects (P<0.0001 and P=0.001, respectively). Furthermore, the A allele was associated with protection against T1DM under recessive (odds ratio [OR], 0.482; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.288 to 0.806) and additive (OR, 0.470; 95% CI, 0.278 to 0.794) inheritance models, adjusting for human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DR/DQ genotypes, gender, and ethnicity. Conclusion: The A/A genotype of TYK2 rs2304256 SNP is associated with protection against T1DM in a Southern Brazilian population.
pyMPEALab Toolkit for Accelerating Phase Design in Multi-principal Element Alloys
Upadesh Subedi,Anil Kunwar,Yuri Amorim Coutinho,Khem Gyanwali 대한금속·재료학회 2022 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.28 No.1
Multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) occur at or nearby the centre of the multicomponent phase space, and they have theunique potential to be tailored with a blend of several desirable properties for the development of materials of future. The lackof universal phase diagrams for MPEAs has been a major challenge in the accelerated design of products with these materials. This study aims to solve this issue by employing data-driven approaches in phase prediction. A MPEA is frst representedby numerical fngerprints (composition, atomic size diference , electronegativity , enthalpy of mixing , entropy of mixing, dimensionless Ω parameter, valence electron concentration and phase types ), and an artifcial neural network (ANN) isdeveloped upon the datasets of these numerical descriptors. A pyMPEALab GUI interface is developed on the top of thisANN model with a computational capability to associate composition features with remaining other input features. With theGUI interface, an user can predict the phase(s) of a MPEA by entering solely the information of composition. It is furtherexplored on how the knowledge of phase(s) prediction in composition-varied AlxCrCoFeMnNi and CoCrNiNbx can help inunderstanding the mechanical behavior of these MPEAs.
