• The Effects of Structure on Participation: Informal Cooperative Learning in Small Groups

        Christopher Lange,Jamie Costley 공주대학교 교육연구소 2014 교육연구 Vol.28 No.2

This study examines the use of structure within informal cooperative learning group work as well as participation that occurs within such group work. The structures of various cooperative learning techniques including Numbered Heads Together, Think-Pair-Share, Think-Pair-Share/Jigsaw, and Jigsaw are compar ed based on the nature and levels of participation they elicit. The varying structu res of these techniques are analyzed to explore the possibility that more structure in specific techniques can lead to increased levels of participation as well as more even participation among group members. Quantitative research was cond ucted to analyze the cause and effect of variables in order to examine the relation ship of the structuring of these techniques with participation output of students in informal cooperative learning groups. The results of this study appear to favor the Think-Pair-Share related techniques over the non-Think-Pair-Share relate d techniques in regards to equality of participation, number of words per group, number of words per student, and number of words per turn taken. These result s are analyzed and implications are made to suggest further research.

Relationships of Motivational Orientation and Creativity and Their Effects on Writing Performance

        Christopher Lange,Hyun-Ju Kim 한국영어교육학회 2021 ENGLISH TEACHING(영어교육) Vol.76 No.2

Motivational orientation and creativity of students in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing courses have recently garnered increased attention in South Korea and around the world. In an effort to advance research in these areas, this study examined relationships involving motivational orientation (intrinsic goal orientation and self-efficacy), creativity, and writing performance. A group of university EFL students (n = 41) in South Korea participated in this study. They were asked to complete questionnaires of intrinsic goal orientation and self-efficacy, take the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking, and complete a series of writing tasks including a persuasive essay as part of their performance assessment of a writing class, which served as the context of this study. Results showed no significant relationship between motivational orientation and creativity. However, an interaction effect between intrinsic goal orientation and self-efficacy on student writing performance was found. Results are discussed and recommendations are made based on pedagogical implications of these findings.

      • How Semi-Formal Group Work can Support Learning in Large Online Classes

Costley,Jamie,Lange,Christopher,Fanguy,Mik 한국외국어교육학회 2018 한국외국어교육학회 학술대회 자료집 Vol.2018 No.-

This research looking into how the amount of group-work a learner does and their role in the group affects learning. The learners (n = 2260) in this study were taking classes at the OCU (Open Cyber University), and the present study looks at the effects of their self-generated group-work. Of the learners who were a part of this study 62% participated in some type of semi-formal group-work. This group work was voluntary so the high level of participation shows that students felt that is would be helpful for their learning (Costley & Lange, 2018). This follows other research on the topic that shows that learners often found group work helpful when dealing with abstract of difficult contents when studying online (Butson & Thomson). The results of this study show a strong positive relationship between the level of group work students do and higher levels of learning. However, as an individual’s contribution to the group increased, there was a negative relationship with learning. This led to an interesting moderating effect, whereby as the strong positive relationship between group work level and learning was weakened by the inclusion of group contribution in the model. In other words, the high contributors did not get the benefits of group work to the same degree that the low contributors did. This research used the survey method and moderation analysis was done using PROCESS macro model 1 (Hayes, 2013).

Case RePort : IgG4-Associated Cholangitis Can Mimic Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma

        ( Victor M Zaydfudim ),( Andrew Y Wang ),( Eduard E De Lange ),( Zimin Zhao ),( Christopher A Moskaluk ),( Todd W Bauer ),( Reid B Adams ) 대한간학회 2015 Gut and Liver Vol.9 No.4

IgG4-associated cholangitis can mimic hilar cholangiocarcinoma. Previously reported patients with IgG4-associated cholangitis mimicking cholangiocarcinoma had elevated serum IgG4 levels and long-segment biliary strictures. However, in the absence of other diagnostic criteria for malignancy, IgG4-associated cholangitis should remain a consideration among patients with normal serum IgG4 and a hilar mass suspicious for cholangiocarcinoma. The presence of a hilar mass and a malignant-appearing biliary stricture in two patients with normal serum IgG4 prompted further evaluation and subsequent concomitant liver and bile duct resection and reconstruction. The diagnosis of IgG4-associated cholangitis was established during the pathologic evaluation of the resected specimens. IgG4-associated cholangitis is a known imitator of hilar cholangiocarcinoma and should be considered in the differential diagnosis even among serologically IgG4-negative patients with a hilar mass prior to operative resection. FARVAT: a family-based rare variant association test

        Choi, Sungkyoung,Lee, Sungyoung,Cichon, Sven,,then, Markus M.,Lange, Christoph,Park, Taesung,Won, Sungho Oxford University Press 2014 Bioinformatics Vol.30 No.22

Motivation: Individuals in each family are genetically more homogeneous than unrelated individuals, and family-based designs are often recommended for the analysis of rare variants. However, despite the importance of family-based samples analysis, few statistical methods for rare variant association analysis are available. Results: In this report, we propose a FAmily-based Rare Variant Association Test (FARVAT). FARVAT is based on the quasi-likelihood of whole families, and is statistically and computationally efficient for the extended families. FARVAT assumed that families were ascertained with the disease status of family members, and incorporation of the estimated genetic relationship matrix to the proposed method provided robustness under the presence of the population substructure. Depending on the choice of working matrix, our method could be a burden test or a variance component test, and could be extended to the SKAT-O-type statistic. FARVAT was implemented in C+ +, and application of the proposed method to schizophrenia data and simulated data for GAW17 illustrated its practical importance.

      • On the Meta-Analysis of Genome-Wide Association Studies: A Robust and Efficient Approach to Combine Population and Family-Based Studies

        Won, Sungho,Lu, Qing,Bertram, Lars,Tanzi, Rudolph E.,Lange, Christoph S. Karger AG 2012 Human heredity Vol.73 No.1

For the meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies, we propose a new method to adjust for the population stratification and a linear mixed approach that combines family-based and unrelated samples. The proposed approach achieves similar power levels as a standard meta-analysis which combines the different test statistics or p values across studies. However, by virtue of its design, the proposed approach is robust against population admixture and stratification, and no adjustments for population admixture and stratification, even in unrelated samples, are required. Using simulation studies, we examine the power of the proposed method and compare it to standard approaches in the meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies. The practical features of the approach are illustrated with a meta-analysis of three genome-wide association studies for Alzheimer’s disease. We identify three single nucleotide polymorphisms showing significant genome-wide association with affection status. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms are novel and will be verified in other populations in our follow-up study.

Copyright © 2012 S. Karger AG, Basel
