Background: All types of membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) areprogressive diseases with poor prognoses. Recently, a newly proposed classificationof these diseases separated them into immune complex- and complementmediateddiseases. We investigated the frequency of C3 glomerulonephritis amongpreviously diagnosed MPGN patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of patients diagnosed with MPGN atthree tertiary care institutions between 2001 and 2010. We investigated theincidence of complement-mediated disease among patients diagnosed with MPGN. Progressive renal dysfunction was defined as a 50% reduction in the glomerularfiltration rate or the need for renal replacement therapy. Results: Among the 3,294 renal biopsy patients, 77 (2.3%) were diagnosed withMPGN; 31 cases were excluded, of which seven were diagnosed with systemic lupusnephritis, and the others were not followed for a minimum of 12 months afterbiopsy. Based on the new classification, complement-mediated MPGN was diagnosedin two patients (4.3%); only one patient developed progressive renaldysfunction. Among the immune complex-mediated MPGN patients, 17 patientsdeveloped progressive renal dysfunction. Serum albumin and creatinine levels atthe time of MPGN diagnosis were risk factors of renal deterioration, after adjustingfor low C3 levels and nephrotic syndrome. Conclusion: Complement-mediated glomerulonephritis was present in 4.3% ofpatients previously diagnosed with MPGN.
Orotic Acid Induces Hypertension Associated with Impaired Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthesis

<P>Orotic acid (OA) is an intermediate of pyrimidine nucleotide biosynthesis. Hereditary deficiencies in some enzymes associated with pyrimidine synthesis or the urea cycle induce OA accumulation, resulting in orotic aciduria. A link between patients with orotic aciduria and hypertension has been reported; however, the molecular mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, to elucidate the role of OA in vascular insulin resistance, we investigated whether OA induced endothelial dysfunction and hypertension. OA inhibited insulin- or metformin-stimulated nitric oxide (NO) production and endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) phosphorylation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. A decreased insulin response by OA was mediated by impairment of the insulin-stimulated phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)-protein kinase B (PKB/Akt) signaling pathway in cells overexpressing the p110-PI3K catalytic subunit. Impaired effects of metformin on eNOS phosphorylation and NO production were reversed in cells transfected with constitutively active AMP-activated protein kinase. Moreover, experimental induction of orotic aciduria in rats caused insulin resistance, measured as a 125% increase in the homeostasis model assessment, and hypertension, measured as a 25% increase in systolic blood pressure. OA increased the plasma concentration of endothelin-1 by 201% and significantly inhibited insulin- or metformin-induced vasodilation. A compromised insulin or metformin response on the Akt/eNOS and AMP-activated protein kinase/eNOS pathway was observed in aortic rings of OA-fed rats. Taken together, we showed that OA induces endothelial dysfunction by contributing to vascular and systemic insulin resistance that affects insulin- or metformin-induced NO production, leading to the development of hypertension.</P>
Differential Effects of Ginsenoside Metabolites on HERG K<sup>+</sup> Channel Currents

The human ether-a-go-go-related gene (HERG) cardiac $K^+$ channels are one of the representative pharmacological targets for development of drugs against cardiovascular diseases such as arrhythmia. Panax ginseng has been known to exhibit cardioprotective effects. In a previous report we demonstrated that ginsenoside $Rg_3$ regulates HERG $K^+$ channels by decelerating deactivation. However, little is known about how ginsenoside metabolites regulate HERG $K^+$ channel activity. In the present study, we examined the effects of ginsenoside metabolites such as compound K (CK), protopanaxadiol (PPD), and protopanaxatriol (PPT) on HERG $K^+$ channel activity by expressing human a subunits in Xenopus oocytes. CK induced a large persistent deactivatingtail current ($I_{deactivating-tail}$) and significantly decelerated deactivating current decay in a concentration-dependent manner. The $EC_{50}$ for persistent $I_{deactivating-tail}$ was $16.6{\pm}1.3$ ${\mu}M$. In contrast to CK, PPT accelerated deactivating-tail current deactivation. PPD itself had no effects on deactivating-tail currents, whereas PPD inhibited ginsenoside $Rg_3$-induced persistent $I_{deactivating-tail}$ and accelerated HERG $K^+$ channel deactivation in a concentration-dependent manner. These results indicate that ginsenoside metabolites exhibit differential regulation on Ideactivating-tail of HERG $K^+$ channel.
TiN Anode for Electrolytic Reduction of UO2 in Pyroprocessing

파이로프로세싱 전해환원 공정에서 현재 사용 중인 Pt 양극을 대체하기 위한 소재 개발은 매우 중요하다. 이 연구에서는 전 기화학 반응시 산소를 발생시키는 전도성 세라믹 양극으로서 TiN의 전기화학적 거동을 알아보았다. UO2의 전해환원이 일어 나는 동안 TiN 양극의 적합성과 안정성에 대한 평가를 진행하였다. LiCl-Li2O 용융염에서 TiN 양극을 이용하여 UO2를 전기 화학적으로 금속 U로 변환시킬 수 있었다. 반응 도중 TiN의 산화 반응은 관찰되지 않았다. 하지만 TiN 내부에서 공공이 생 기는 것을 확인하였으며, 이에 따라 소재 수명에 제한이 있을 것으로 판단된다. Developing novel anode materials to replace the Pt anode currently used in electrolytic reduction is an important issue on pyroprocessing. In this study, the electrochemical behavior of TiN was investigated as the conductive ceramic anode which evolves O2 gas during the reaction. The feasibility and stability of the TiN anode was examined during the electrolytic reduction of UO2. The TiN anode could electrochemically convert UO2 to metallic U in a LiCl–Li2O molten salt electrolyte. No oxidation of TiN was observed during the reaction; however, the formation of voids in the bulk section appeared to limit the lifetime of the TiN anode.
Five Species of Syrphidae (Insecta: Diptera) Newly Recorded in Korea

In Korean Peninsula, a total of 175 syrphid species are currently known. As a result of ongoing systematic study of the family Syrphidae, we have discovered the following five species for the first time in the Korean Peninsula: Mallota rossica Portschinsky, 1877, M. shatalkini Mutin, 1999, Sphiximorpha rachmaninovi (Violovitsh, 1981), Volucella bivitta Huo et al., 2007, and V. inanoides Hervé-Bazin, 1923. Among these taxa, Sphiximorpha Rondani, 1850, is the genus recorded for the first time in Korea. In total, three subfamilies, 16 tribes, 70 genera, and 180 species are now officially recognized for the Korean syrphid fauna. In order to facilitate their identification, we here provide specific diagnoses and color photographs for the species listed.

Mollugin has been reported to have various biological activities including antineoplastic, antitumor, antiviral against the hepatitis B virus, anti-aging and antimutagenic activities. An effective and concise synthesis of mollugin in two steps including kinetic control from the cheap starting material 1,4-naphthoquinone has been introduced, and mollugin derivatives thus prepared are screened for their inhibition ability against the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and the dihydrobenzochromene structure might be an additional anti-HCV agent as a new leading compound.

Purpose: This case report discusses the effect of a root submergence technique on preserving the periodontal tissue at the pontic site of fixed dental prostheses in the maxillary anterior aesthetic zone. Methods: Teeth with less than ideal structural support for fixed retainer abutments were decoronated at the crestal bone level. After soft tissue closure, the final fixed dental prostheses were placed with the pontics over the submerged root area. Radiographic and clinical observations at the pontic sites were documented. Results: The submerged roots at the pontic sites preserved the surrounding periodontium without any periapical pathology. The gingival contour at the pontic site was maintained in harmony with those of the adjacent teeth, as well as the overall form of the arch. Conclusions: The results of this clinical report indicate that a root submergence technique can be successfully applied in pontic site development with fixed dental prostheses, especially in the maxillary anterior esthetic zone.
Implementation of a Reactive Semantics for an Industrial Manipulator using OPRoS

A Robot in factories has to execute its mission robustly in coarse environments and handle many types of events in dynamic real world. The former is related to dependability or real-time characteristics and the latter is related to reactivity or feasibility. But it is very difficult to prepare robot SW with reactivity and dependability at the same time for the industrial manipulators because general SW with feasibility fails to meet real-time requirements. Therefore, we suggest a method how to make industrial robot software have reactive semantics. For this aim, we use OPRoS (Open software Platform for Robotic Services) and application centric language interpreter. In this framework, state machine component connected abstracted sensor model components invoke signal to an interpreter component in order handle various external operation conditions. And the interpreter determines which robot behaviors will executed for the signals and make suitable robot behavior components work. Finally, we implement our robot software on mulit-core system in order to meet real-time needs including low-latency and strict period time.
