Bacillus thuringiensis (B. t.) strains are important microorganism because they produced a large amount of δ-endotoxin protein per bacterial cell and their toxins are highly toxic to Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Diptera depending on B. t. To date, more than a hundred Cry proteins have been identified and classified into 195 holotypes, based on the amino acid sequence identity. The Cry proteins or cry genes from the Korean native B. t. isolates in this study were not identified yet. The electrospray ionization of quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (ESI Q-TOF MS) was used to get the internal amino acid sequences of the endotoxin-spore culture mixtures of B. t. isolates, for which polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques were unable to detect the cognate genes. Most of Cry proteins seperated, excized, and extracted from the one dimensional - polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (1D-PAGE), instead of 2D-PAGE, were matched with protein databases using MS-MASCOT search program. The internal amino acid sequences which were submitted to protein BLAST (basic local alignment search tool) had partially homology with the Cry protein databases. Hence, present data strongly suggest that the de novo amino acid sequencing and ESI Q-TOF/MS analysis along with MASCOT search could be used as a simple and rapid method for detection of novel Cry toxins from B. t. isolates and identification of B. t. isolates.

Sung Kew Kim,Woong San Lee,Sang-Jin Han,Eun-Jung Kim,Mohammed I. El-Gamal,김병수,최태현,Chang Woon Choi,In-hye Ham,오창현,Ho-Young Choi,Jung-Hyuck Cho 대한화학회 2012 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.33 No.2
An 125I-labeled resveratrol derivative 1 was synthesized. It was purified by reverse phase HPLC. Radiochemical purity of the product was more than 98%, and the yield was 35% (decay-corrected). Its biodistribution in tumorbearing mice was studied. The results showed that the highest radioactivity was located in intestine and stomach. The biodistribution profile suggests that compound 1 can be effectively used as a promising imaging probe for intestine and stomach.

Our study proposes a novel strategy for the synthesis of Ag derivatives (AgX@Ag (X = Cl and Br) or Ag nano/microtubes) using the controlled chemical reduction or electron-beam irradiation of AgX nanowires (NWs), which are formed from the controlled dewetting of a AgX thin film on colloidal particles. The size of the AgX@Ag and Ag nano/microtubes can be controlled using the AgCl NWs as templates and varying the concentration of NaX. By controlling the concentration of NaBr, heterojunction-structured AgCl/AgBr NWs (H-AgCl/AgBr NWs) can be produced from the AgCl NWs due to a partial ion-exchange reaction (low concentration), and the AgBr NWs produced after a complete ion-exchange reaction between Cl- and Br- are further grown into micrometer-sized AgBr wires (high concentration). The resulting AgX NWs can be transformed into corresponding AgX@Ag or Ag nano/microtubes via a controlled chemical or physical method. The AgX derivatives (AgX@Ag nanotubes (NTs) and AgX NWs) are tested as visible-light-induced photocatalysts for decomposition of methyl orange. The AgX@Ag NTs exhibit the best photocatalytic activities due to the advantages of the core@shell structure, allowing multiple reflections of visible light within the interior cavity, providing a well-defined and clean Ag/AgX interface, and preventing direct adsorption of pollutants on AgX because of the shell structure. These advantages allow AgX@Ag NTs to maintain high catalytic performance even after multiple uses. The approach can also be used as a direct method for preparing Ag nano/microtubes with a tailored size and as a new method for incorporating a AgX NW core into a Ag nano/microtube shell. Our approach is useful for synthesizing various types of one-dimensional heterostructured NWs or metal NTs with controlled structures and properties.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Isolation of highly active Bacillus thuringiensis isolates against several Lepidoptera
Sang-Soo Oh,Jung Heub Song,Kyung San Choi,Gum Rae Joe,Hyung-Hoan Lee 한국응용곤충학회 2008 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2008 No.05
A B. thuringiensis kurstaki was first discovered by H. Dulmage in 1970 and commercialized as a DipelTM due to powerful toxicity to various Lepidoptera. Previously we isolated B. thuringiensis kurstaki on the basis of plasmid DNA profiling and H-antigen serotyping. The aims of this study were to screen larvicidal activities and select the highly active B. thuringiensis isolates against the important polyphagous pests of mandarine oranges and vegetables. The colony forming unit (CFU/ml) of each of culture mixtures was determined to estimate the δ-endotoxin concentration. The bioassay against artificial diet-rearing insects was conducted by surface contamination methods using the Petri dishes specially designed and manufactured by SPL Lifesciences. The insecticidal activities to the natural diet-rearing insect were measured by the application of spore and crystal mixtures to the leaf discs of the chinese cabbage with Potter spray tower. The following insects were used for the larvicidal activities of B. thuringiensis isolates: beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua, diamondback moth Plutella xylostella, giant looper Ascotis selenaria, tobacco cutworm Spodoptera litura, and variegated cutworm Peridroma sucia.
Effect of Patellar Taping on Quadriceps Muscle of Knee Joint
Sung Eun Lee,Shin Gyun Kim,Sung Hyoun Cho,Yoo Rim Choi,Chang Sook Kim,Sung Joon Kim,Ki San Nam,Gyung Kim 국제물리치료학회 2012 Journal of International Academy of Physical Ther Vol.3 No.1
This study aims to examine the effect of patellar taping common to patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome on the change of knee joint location. The total number of participants is 12 patients with no pain in their knee. There are three different experiments: no-taping, placebo taping, and patellar taping. After application, they squat on their hams. As a result, both the muscle activity of vastus medialis and that of vastus lateralis increased in placebo taping compared to no-taping, which wasn't statistically significant. However, the muscle activity of vastus medialis and that of vastus lateralis decreased in patellar taping compared to no-taping, which was statistically significant. This suggests that patellar taping causing the lateral attraction of knee joint is more influential to the dynamics of knee joint than skin afferent input in placebo taping. Therefore, patellar taping is effective to change the location of knee joint, affect the muscle activity of quadriceps muscle of thigh, and thus correct the misalignments of the knee joint.
CASE REPORT : A Case of Sarcomatoid Carcinoma Arising from Mucinous Cystadenocarcinoma of Appendix
( San Kim ),( Hyung Wook Kim ),( Dae Hwan Kang ),( Choel Woong Choi ),( Soo Bum Park ),( Tae Ik Park ),( Woo Sung Jo ),( Dong Hyuk Cha ) 대한장연구학회 2013 Intestinal Research Vol.11 No.1
Sarcomatoid carcinoma or carcinosarcoma is a very rare biphasic tumor characterized by a combination of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal cells. The pathogenesis of sarcomatoid carcinoma is not fully elucidated and the guideline of treatment has not been established yet. Although the upper aerodigestive tract, lung and female urogenital system are known to be the most frequently affected, this tumor also can occur in various sites, including the digestive tract. Since sarcomatoid carcinoma in colon was firstly reported in 1986, 24 cases have been reported to date. We report a rare case with sarcomatoid carcinoma of appendix. Interesting histologic feature of our case was the presence of mucinous cystadenocarcinoma with morphological “transition” between carcinomatous and sarcomatous tissue. To our knowledge, this is the first case of sarcomatoid carcinoma arising from mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the appendix. (Intest Res 2013;11:60-65)
