The Poisson effect on the curved beam analysis

The bending stress formula that taking into account the transverse deformation is developedfor plane-curved, untwisted isotropic beams subjected to loadings that result in deformations in the planeof curvature. In order to account the transverse Poisson contraction effect, a new constitutive relationstrains and deformed curvatures for a curved plateis derived in a 6 6 matrix form. This constitutive relation will provide the fundamental basis to theanalyses of curved structures composing of isotropic or anisotropic materials. Then, the bending stressformula of a curved isotropic beam can be deduced from this newly developed curved plate theory. Thestress predictions by the present analysis are compared to those by the analysis that neglected the Poisoncontraction effect. The results show that the Poisson effect becomes more significant as the Poisson ratioand the curvature are getting larger.
A CAN-Based Design for the Control of Electric Vehicle

Due to the development of the advanced technologies, in the recent years, electronic devices for the communication and computer engineering have been considered to implement the so-called “X-by-Wire” scheme for steering control and braking control of the vehicles. It is known that the weight reduction of vehicle systems can decrease the power consumption when the traditional mechanical components can be replaced by electronic devices. Thus, X-by-wire system will be a trend in the automotive industry for saving energy. An event trigger design for vehicle control is proposed in this paper for vehicle control by using the protocol of Controller Area Network (CAN). The proposed design covers the development of CAN communication node, which is developed by using microprocessor chip Microchip PIC18F4585 and MCP2551 CAN transceiver. In addition, an interactive GUI-based utility program developer is also built up for user to easily develop the required function call to cope with the design specification. A wireless electric-driven control vehicle is served as a platform to verify the design of drive-by-wire and brake-by-wire operations. Experimental results demonstrate the success of the proposed design.
A TDMA Based Scheme for the Construction of R2R Communication Platform

In the previous study (Liaw and Kuo, 2012), a preliminary version of the Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA)-based communication platform had been successfully tested to provide the function of wireless hopping data transmission. However, that design was only valid for the consecutive nodes which are close-by. A modified design was proposed in (Liaw, Wang and Lai, 2013) by using self-design Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) nodes to investigate the feasibility of the application in short range data communication. The effect of the packet size and distance between two consecutive nodes on the performance of remote data transmission was also studied. Instead, in this paper, we propose another scheme for time division wireless monitoring transmission protocol (TDWMTP). This design is based on IEEE 802.11a standard with the transmission method of TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) to enhance and implement the function proposed in (Liaw, Wang and Lai, 2013). Experimental results demonstrate the success of the proposed design.
A Study of Image Processing Based Object Depth Estimation

Issue of object’s depth estimation from binocular vision technique is studied in this paper. A binocular vision platform is set up to detect and estimate the object’s depth. Mathematical derivation of object’s depth from the two cameras of the proposed platform is re-visited to reveal the linkage between system parameters such as focal length and the estimation error. Both of simulation and experimental results are obtained for parametric analysis of estimation error. A comparison with Kinect is also given to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed design.
Optimization of EDM parameters for ZrO2 and Al2O3 ceramics using Taguchi method

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is the most commonly used technique in mold and die manufacturing. The purpose of this investigation was to optimize the machining parameters of EDM on zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3). During the EDM process, the surface of electrically nonconductive ceramic was covered with adhesive conductive copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al) foils to attain the threshold of electrical conductivity for the EDM process. The machining characteristics associated with the EDM process such as material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (SR) were explored through the experimental study according to an L18 orthogonal array using the Taguchi method. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to examine the significant machining parameters which affect the machining characteristics. As the experimental results show, peak current and pulse duration significantly affected MRR and SR. In addition, the optimal combination levels of machining parameters were also determined from the response graph of signal-to-noise (S/N) ratios for each level of machining parameters. A practical and convenient process for shaping the electrically nonconductive ceramics was developed which featured high efficiency, high precision, and high-quality of surface integrity.
Load Voltage Tracking of Electric Power Systems by Using Backstepping Design

A backstepping controller design is proposed for the load voltage tracking of electric power system. It is known that a power system might exhibit saddle-node and Hopf bifurcations as load change, which can lead to the appearance of dynamic and/or static voltage collapses. The output tracking control laws are proposed for the load voltage regulation of the electric power system via backstepping control scheme. The numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed control scheme not only could provide the regulation of the load voltage but also prevent and/or delay the appearance of bifurcation phenomena and chaotic behavior.
Transition and Development of Long-term Care Policy in Taiwan

Like most Western countries, population aging is under way in Taiwan primarily due to low fertility and a prolonged life span, The elderly had reached 7% of total population in 1993, and 11% at the end of 2011, Although the proportion of the elderly in Taiwan is not as much high as that of the average in EU countries, its rate of increase in the future is projected to be one of the fastest in the world. Household and Residence databases to do a projection and found that 2.62% of total population need long-term care services in 2011 in Taiwan. In addition, the proportion will rise to 4.42% in 2028. To cope with the first of the preceding challenges, the Department of Health set up six long-term care resource networks in Taiwan to try to improve the insufficiency and unequal distribution in long-term care resources, especially among professionals. In addition, the Ministry of Education has encouraged colleges/universities to set up long-term care programs, which can include several related long-term care courses, and the issuing of certificates if the students can achieve credits in these courses, as a means to develop a reserve of more professionals in long-term care field.

This paper is devoted to the development of the equations which describe the elastic response of a curved laminate subjected to in-plane loads and bending moments. Similar to the classic 6 × 6 ABD matrix constitutive relation of a flat laminate, a new 6 × 6 matrix constitutive relation between force resultants, moment resultants, mid-plane strains and deformed curvatures for a curved laminate is formulated. This curved lamination theory will provide the fundamental basis for the analyses of curved laminated structures. The stress predictions by the present curved lamination theory are compared to those by the curved laminate analysis that neglected the nonlinear terms in the derivation of the constitutive relation. The results show that the curved laminate analysis that neglected the nonlinear terms cannot reflect the effect of curvature and can no longer predict the stresses accurately as the curvature becomes noticeable. In this paper, a curved lamination theory that retains the nonlinear terms and, therefore, accounts for the effect of the non-flat geometry of the structure will be developed.
