Rice takes up phosphorous (P) as major nutrient source for its growth and development when grown under anaerobic water-logged soil conditions. To better understand the underlying mechanisms and to develop potential protein biomarkers of P-starvation, hydroponically-grown rice seedlings in the complete media and phosphorus absence (P-starvation) of phosphorous nutrient solutions were investigated for physiological and proteome changes. The P-starvation manifested significant reduction in root growth in three-week-old seedlings compared to respective complete media. Furthermore, P-starvation also showed increased activity of acid phosphatase in roots of one- and three-week-old seedlings, suggesting that experimental design is suitable for proteomics survey of P-starvation responsive proteins. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis coupled with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry analysis of total root protein from three-week-old seedlings identified 10 P-starvation responsive protein spots out of 140 high-quality protein spots. Identified 10 proteins were involved in metabolism and defense/stress response. Out of 10, 2 and 8 protein spots were found to be up and down-regulated, respectively. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis of corresponding genes of four randomly selected proteins, including putative glyceraldehydes-3-phophate dehydrogenase (G3PDH, spot R1), S-adenosyl-L-methionine synthetase (SAMS, spot R4), ATP synthase subunit alpha (spot R6), and root-specific pathogenesisrelated protein 10 (PR-10, spot R8), showed that just as protein abundance, these proteins are also regulated at the transcript level. Results suggest identified P-starvation responsive proteins are involved in maintaining nutrient homeostasis and/or associated with changes in root physiology under the absence of P.

Purpose: Necrotizing soft tissue infection is the infection of the soft tissue with necrotic changes. It is rare, but results in high mortality. We analyzed the characteristics of patients, prognosis, and mortality factors after reviewing 30 cases of a single hospital for 5 years. Methods: From January 2009 to December 2013, 30 patients diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis or Fournier’s gangrene in Pusan National University Hospital were enrolled for this study. The following parameters were analyzed retrospectively: demographics, infection site, initial laboratory finding, initial antibiotics, isolated microorganisms, number of surgeries, time to first operation, length of intensive care unit, and total hospital stays. Results: The overall mortality rate was 23.3%. Mean body mass index (BMI) of the survival group (24.7 ± 5.0 kg/㎡) was significantly higher than the nonsurvival group (22.0 ± 1.4 kg/㎡, P = 0.029). When BMI was less than 23 kg/㎡, the mortality rate was significantly higher (P = 0.025). Two patients (6.7%) with chronic kidney disease requiring hemodialysis died (P = 0.048). Initial WBC count (>13×103/μL), CRP (>26.5 mg/dL), and platelet (PLT) count (<148×103/μL) were found to have negative impact on the prognosis of necrotizing soft tissue infection. Factors such as potassium level, blood urea nitrogen (>27.6 mg/dL), serum creatinine (>1.2 mg/dL) that reflected kidney function were significant mortality factors. Conclusion: Patients with low BMI or abnormal values of WBC count, CRP, and PLT count reflecting the degree of infection or abnormal renal function will need more intensive care.

Background/Aims: Westernization in many Asian countries have changed lifestyles and diets, so once rare diseases have now become prevalent. The aim of this study is to investigate the changing pattern of digestive and liver disease in Korea, from 1990 to 2006. Methods: We extracted data specific gastrointestina (GI) disease based on the International Classification of Diseases code from the in-patients records at the Kangnam St. Mary`s Hospital in 1990, 1996 and 2006. This hospital is a tertiary-care hospital in Seoul, Korea, which has a capacity of 800 beds. Results: The admission rate for GI disease increased between 1990 and 2006. Overall in-patients were 1,623 persons in 1990, 2,368 persons in 1996 and 4,166 persons in 2006. The mean age of in-patients increased as time went by. A stomach cancer was the most common diagnosis during all periods, but its prevalence has decreased. Colon cancer ranked the 7th in 1990, but markedly increased and now ranks the second. The third was a hepatocellular carcinoma. The bile duct and gallbladder cancer, pancreas and esophageal cancer ranking followed with little interval change. In cases of cancer patients, a regular admission dramatically increased for chemotherapy. The number of patients admitted with pre-malignant neoplasm of stomach and colon increased remarkably with the development of endoscopy. The liver transplant, inflammatory bowel discase, and reflux esophagitis emerged form mid-1990s with greater frequencies, yet much below the levels found in the West. The admission rate for peptic ulcer, especially ulcer bleeding remained relatively stable, despite a decreased rate for ulcer perforation. Liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, cholelithiasis with cholecystitis-cholangitis, appendicitis, hemorrhoid and gastritis all decreased. Conclusions: The stomach cancer is the leading cause of admission, despite a recent decline. Colon cancer showed a marked rise. The liver transplant, inflammatory bowel disease and reflux esophagitis were new diagnosis with an increased tendency.
Basic Properties of Cell Fabricated by Ion-beam Treatment for In-plane Switching LCD

We investigated the horizontal alignment properties such as surface morphology, pretilt angle, and polar and azimuthal anchoring energy of organic alignment material-coated surface treated by ion beam. In this investigation the energy and incident angle of ion beam were changed. We also fabricated an in-plane switching (IPS) cell by ion beam alignment. The results showed similar voltage-transmittance characteristics to those of a rubbed cell and better dark state.

<P>p53 plays a major role in apoptosis through activation of pro-apoptotic gene Bax. It also regulates apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE) expression in the base excision repair pathway against oxidative DNA damages. This study investigated whether p53-dependent apoptosis is correlated with APE using an experimental rat model of hydronephrosis. Hydronephrosis was induced by partial ligation of the right ureter. Animals were sacrificed on scheduled time after unilateral ureteral obstruction and the expression of 8-OHdG, γ款-H2AX, apoptotic proteins and APE was determined. The accumulated p53 activated Bax and caspase-3 7 days after hydronephrosis induction and the resulting high levels of p53-dependent apoptotic proteins and γ款-H2AX tended to decrease APE. The intensities of 8-OHdG and caspase-3 immunolocalization significantly increased in obstructed kidneys than in sham-operated kidneys, although APE immunoreactivity increased after hydronephrosis induction. These results suggest that oxidative DNA damages in obstructed kidneys may trigger p53-dependent apoptosis through repression of APE.</P>
Demonstration of Alternative Fabrication Techniques for Robust MEMS Device
Chang, Sung-Pil,Park, Je-Young,Cha, Doo-Yeol,Lee, Heung-Shik The Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic 2006 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.7 No.4
This work describes efforts in the fabrication and testing of robust microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Robustness is typically achieved by investigating non-silicon substrates and materials for MEMS fabrication. Some of the traditional MEMS fabrication techniques are applicable to robust MEMS, while other techniques are drawn from other technology areas, such as electronic packaging. The fabrication technologies appropriate for robust MEMS are illustrated through laminated polymer membrane based pressure sensor arrays. Each array uses a stainless steel substrate, a laminated polymer film as a suspended movable plate, and a fixed, surface micromachined back electrode of electroplated nickel. Over an applied pressure range from 0 to 34 kPa, the net capacitance change was approximately 0.14 pF. An important attribute of this design is that only the steel substrate and the pressure sensor inlet is exposed to the flow; i.e., the sensor is self-packaged.
