<P>Tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), which is a primary cytokine responsible for inflammatory responses in skin, induces the synthesis of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), which causes skin aging. The protective effects of 3-deoxysappanchalcone against TNF-α-induced damage was investigated using human skin keratinocytes. The results showed that 3-deoxysappanchalcone inhibited MMP-9 expression at the protein and mRNA level, by blocking the activation of activator protein-1 (AP-1) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). Taken together, the inhibitory activity of 3-deoxysappanchalcone on MMP-9 expression and production in TNF-α-treated cells was found to be mediated by the suppression of AP-1 and NF-κB activation.</P>
P018 : Patch testing with the stage make-up materials

Background: Transforming the face with cosmetics is an essential paret of being a performer for most entertainers. By the way regulation and registration of stage make-up are not controlled by government in Korea. Some stage make-up materials may be responsible for the patients with contact dermatitis. Objectives: Our purpose was to determine whether stage make-up materials have positive reaction from patch test. Methods: Sixty female students who got the beauty and cosmetic class as major part were patch-tested with the Korean standard series and four stage make-up materials. We analyzed the skin conditions of the persons from a questionnaire. Results: The 24 antigen series to the cosmetology majors, shows that the positive rate of the patch test on the Korean standard antigen series, is 53.3% and the rate of the 4 Stage makeup materials is 13.3%. For the Korean standard antigen series, the top 3 antigen series are thimerosal, nickel sulphate, and p-tert butylphenol formalde-hyderesin in order. The antigen series in low positive rate, are colophony 3.3%, cobalt chloride 1.7%, paraben mix 1.7%, Cl+meIsothiazolinoe 1.7%, mercaptobenzothia zole 1.7%, mercapto mix 1.7%. For the 4 Stage makeup materials, only 13.3% as a whole positive rate, collodion 10% and spirit gum 3.3%, shows the positive rate of the path test. Conclusion: We found that stage make-up materials may have sensitizing abilities, and then the users should pay extra attention and offer the following-up control.

Ni/YSZ $(Y_2O_3-stabilized\;ZrO_2)$ composite as an electrode component for High Temperature Electrolysis (HTE) was fabricated by mechanical alloying method using Ni and YSZ powders. Characterization of the synthesized composite was investigated with various analysis tools, including XRD, SEM and PSA, and a self-supporting planar unit cell prepared with the Ni/YSZ composite was prepared to study the electrochemical reactions for the production of hydrogen. The Ni/YSZ cermet is composed of crystalline Ni and YSZ, in a sub-micro scale, and has an even distribution without aggregated particles. In addition, under an electrochemical reaction, the unit cell showed an $H_2$ evolution rate from steam of 14 Nml/min and $600mA/cm^2$ of current density at the electrode.

<P>This study evaluated periodontal repair and biomaterial reaction following implantation of a newly fabricated calcium phosphate chitosan block bone and chitosan membrane on the regeneration of 1- wall intrabony defects in the beagle dogs. The surgical control group received a flap operation only, while experimental group was treated with calcium phosphate chitosan block bone and/or chitosan membrane. All dogs were uneventful healing without any complication. The subjects were sacrificed 8 weeks after the experimental surgery, and a comparative histological and histometric examination was done. Chitosan membrane group significantly enhanced bone regeneration compared to control, CaP-chitosan block bone and combination group. Chitosan membrane remnants were observed in chitosan and combination group, while CaP-chitosan bone materials were resorbed completely. These results suggest that Chitosan membrnae significantly enhanced bone and cementum formation in advanced periodontal defects.</P>
