The role played by the artist and the nature of art are two of the most enduring and controversial themes in Western philosophy. Indeed, if we were to trace the history of aesthetics, it seems evident that the role of the artist and the effects of art have been called into question as history crosses over into another age. My concern in this study has to do with the function of art and the artist throughout Western history, which is not so much an emancipatory movement as it is a crisis of transcendence. Likewise, the secular intellectual dogmatism that, in our age, treats literary texts as open documents of linguistics analysis without consideration for the author’s intention is less a democratic endeavor than it is a crisis of religious belief.

High-performance concrete, besides aggregate, cement, and water, incorporates supplementary cementitious materials, such as fly ash and blast furnace slag, and chemical admixture, such as superplasticizer. Hence, it is a highly complex material and modeling its behavior represents a difficult task. This paper presents an evolutionary system for the prediction of high performance concrete strength. The proposed framework blends a recently developed version of genetic programming with a local search method. The resulting system enables us to build a model that produces an accurate estimation of the considered parameter. Experimental results show the suitability of the proposed system for the prediction of concrete strength. The proposed method produces a lower error with respect to the state-of-the art technique. The paper provides two contributions: from the point of view of the high performance concrete strength prediction, a system able to outperform existing state-of-the-art techniques is defined; from the machine learning perspective, this case study shows that including a local searcher in the geometric semantic genetic programming system can speed up the convergence of the search process.
A full-range hybrid device for sound reproduction

The paper deals with the design of a device for sound reproduction to be fixed to a supporting surface. The device is made up of two different types of acoustic actuators based on different technologies. This allows to reproduce sound in the range of frequencies from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The generation of sound at high frequencies is demanded to a magnetostrictive actuator, while a more traditional magnetodynamics actuator is used to generate sound at low frequencies. The coupling between these two actuators leads to a device having small overall dimensions and high performance.

Pd-ceramic composite membranes and catalytic membrane reactors(CMR) have been studied for hydrogen and its isotopes (deuterium and tritium) purification and recovery in the fusion reactor fuel cycle. Particularly a closed-loop process has been studied for recovering tritium from tritiated water by means of a CMR in which the water gas shift reaction takes place. The development of the techniques for coating micro-porous ceramic tubes with Pd and Pd/Ag thin layers is described : P composite membranes have been produced by electroless deposition (Pd/Ag film of 10-20 $\mu$m) and rolling of thin metal sheets (Pd and Pd/Ag membranes of 50-70 $\mu$m). Experimental results of the electroless membranes have shown a not complete hydrogen selectivity because of the presence of some defects(micro-holes) in the metallic thin layer. Conversely the rolled thin Pd and Pd/ag membranes have separated hydrogen from the other gases with a complete selectivity giving rise to a slightly larger (about a factor 1.7) mass transfer resistance with respect to the electroless membranes. Experimental tests have confirmed the good performances of the rolled membranes in terms of chemical stability over several weeks of operation. Therefore these rolled membranes and CMR are adequate for applications in the fusion reactor fuel cycle as well as in the industrial processes where high pure hydrogen is required (i.e. hydrocarbon reforming for fuel cell)

Many hyperparameters have to be tuned to have a robust convolutional neural network that will be able to accurately classify images. One of the most important hyperparameters is the batch size, which is the number of images used to train a single forward and backward pass. In this study, the effect of batch size on the performance of convolutional neural networks and the impact of learning rates will be studied for image classification, specifically for medical images. To train the network faster, a VGG16 network with ImageNet weights was used in this experiment. Our results concluded that a higher batch size does not usually achieve high accuracy, and the learning rate and the optimizer used will have a significant impact as well. Lowering the learning rate and decreasing the batch size will allow the network to train better, especially in the case of fine-tuning.

Accurate High Performance Concrete Prediction with an Alignment-Based Genetic Programming System

In 2013, our research group published a contribution in which a new version of genetic programming, called Geometric Semantic Genetic Programming (GSGP), was fostered as an appropriate computational intelligence method for predicting the strength of high-performance concrete. That successful work, in which GSGP was shown to outperform the existing systems, allowed us to promote GSGP as the new state-of-the-art technology for high-performance concrete strength prediction. In this paper, we propose, for the first time, a novel genetic programming system called Nested Align Genetic Programming (NAGP). NAGP exploits semantic awareness in a completely different way compared to GSGP. The reported experimental results show that NAGP is able to significantly outperform GSGP for high-performance concrete strength prediction. More specifically, not only NAGP is able to obtain more accurate predictions than GSGP, but NAGP is also able to generate predictive models with a much smaller size, and thus easier to understand and interpret, than the ones generated by GSGP. Thanks to this ability of NAGP, we are able here to show the model evolved by NAGP, which was impossible for GSGP.
A Case of Moderate Hidradenitis Suppurativa and Psoriasis Treated with Secukinumab

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a disorder of the apocrine gland causing a chronic, recurrent and painful inflammation. It is a disabilitating condition and, though many therapeutic options are available, the response is often ineffective in most cases and patients can present many recurrences with physical and psychological sequelae. Recent data had shown increased interleukin (IL)-17 serum levels in patients with HS. Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disorder and new evidences have shown the role of Th17 cells in its pathogenesis and the therapeutic efficacy of anti-IL-17 antibodies. We present a case of a patient suffering from psoriasis and HS successfully treated with anti-IL-17 antibodies for both conditions. This is the first case report of HS treated with secukinumab.
