Production of SrCO3 and (NH4)2SO4 by the dry mechanochemical processing of celestite

A SrCO3 formation starting from activated SrSO4–(NH4)2CO3mixtures as a result of dry mechanochemical treatment for 180 min in a planetary ball mill of celestite together with (NH4)2CO3 was studied. The phases that formed during milling were successfully characterized by X-ray diffraction measurement (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and chemical analysis. A novel hydrometallurgical process to convert both SrCO3 (product) and (NH4)2SO4(by-product) from celestite via dry mechanochemical conversion with (NH4)2CO3 was developed for the first time in this work. Under optimum conditions, the conversion of SrCO3 was 98.1%. The (NH4)2SO4leach solution was crystallized.
Isoquinoline Alkaloids from Fumaria bastardii

The extract of the aerial parts of Fumaria bastardii Bor. afforded 12 alkaloids belonging to the skeletally six different groups of the isoquinoline allcaloids. In this publication, the isolation and identification of protopine (1), corydaldine (2), oxyhydrastinine (3), (-)-fumaritine (4), (+)-fumariline (5), (-)-O-methylfumarophycine (12), (+)-bicuculline (10), (-)-β-hydrastine (7), (-)-corlumine (11), (+)-tetrahydropalmatine (8), (-)-stylopine (6), and (+)-juziphine (9) are described. Their structures have been determined by using extensive spectroscopic techniques. This is the first report of the occurrence of these alkaloids in Fumaria bastardii of Turkish origin.
Local thin jacketing for the retrofitting of reinforced concrete columns

Two series of tests were conducted to investigate the behavior of local thin jacketing for the retrofitting of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. In the first series, four full-scale RC columns with a height of 400 cm and a 30 cm square cross-section were tested under constant axial load and reversed cyclic lateral displacements. The heavily damaged columns were retrofitted with local thin jacketing. Self-compacting concrete (SCC) was used in the production of 7.5 cm thick, four-sided jacketing. The height of the jacketing was 100 cm for one specimen and 200 cm for all others. In the second series, the retrofitted columns were retested with the same axial load and displacement history. The effectiveness of local thin jacketing in the retrofitting of RC columns was examined with respect to lateral strength, stiffness, inelastic load-deformation behavior and energy dissipation.

Many studies have reported that the widespread use and abuse of antibiotics have led to the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria, a significant weakness of current antibiotic therapy. Therefore, the present scenario motivates scientists to develop biocompatible nanoparticles (Nps) that apply better antibacterial effects and biocompatible properties, including cost-effectiveness. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of boron nitride (BN) and chitosan coated BN-Nps using different surfactants. In this regard, the potential antibacterial activity of prepared chitosan-coated and non-coated BN-Nps have been investigated against nine reference bacteria strains. BN-Nps and chitosan-coated BN-Nps were successfully developed and characterized. Nps determined that showed high zeta potential values (between -20.1 mV and +59.2 mV). Antimicrobial resistance results indicated that formulations of BN-Nps with negative zeta potential were found to be effective compared to chitosan-coated BN-Nps with high positive zeta potential. These findings emphasize the future availability of BN-Nps formulation providing antibacterial activity.

Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile is a Gram (+), anaerobic, spore forming, rod shaped bacterium that can produce toxin. The objective of this study is to reveal the presence of C. difficile in meat products, to analyze the ribotype diversity by PCR and to evaluate the antibiotic susceptibility of isolated strains. The organism was isolated in 22 out of 319 (6.9%) examined meat product samples and 9 out of 22 (40.9%) isolates were identified as RT027 and all isolates had the ability of toxin production. In terms of antibiotic susceptibility, all isolates were susceptive to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, tetracycline and vancomycin and 21 (95.4%) isolates to metronidazole. On the other hand, imipenem and cefotaxim resistance was observed in all. In conclusion, the results of this comprehensive study conducted in Turkey deduced the presence of C. difficile in different meat products. Therefore, these products can be evaluated as a potential contamination source of C. difficile from animals to humans especially for elders, youngsters, long terms wide spectrum antibiotic used and immuno-suppressed individuals.
