        Layered tungsten oxide-based hybrid materials incorporating transition metal ions

        Layered organicinorganic hybrid materials represent a quasi-two-dimensional system that may exhibit interesting behaviour. Tran-sition metal ions were incorporated in a tungsten oxide/a,x-diaminoalkane layered hybrid system via three synthesis techniques. X-raydiraction indicates an expansion of the interlayer spacing with increasing alkyl length. Infrared vibrational spectra of hybrid manganesetungstate hybrid compounds demonstrate that the inorganic framework is unaltered with dierent intercalates, and that the organicwith 2D3D coupling at low temperatures. Manganese tungstate hybrids exhibit antiferromagnetic correlations, while a nickel tungstatehybrid studied indicates ferromagnetic correlations and forms a spin-canted antiferromagnet. AC susceptibility measurements of irontungstate hybrids reveal spin-glass-like behaviour.

      • Examining Early Childhood Writing Development: Attention to Classroom Environment and Teacher Practices

        This longitudinal study examined preschool children’s exposure to writing materials and pedagogical supports. Thirty-four early childhood classrooms in the US participated. A total of 242 children four-yearold children also participated. Detailed observations in the fall and spring of the school year revealed that the majority of teachers provided access to writing tools for children to use during the day (96%), which included a variety of writing implements, paper, and for creating letters. Examinations of teachers’ writing supports revealed few writing interactions in which teachers modeled or scaffolded writing. Little change in writing environments and teacher practice across the preschool year was observed. Teacher behavior was primarily focused on supporting children’s handwriting (54% of interactions during the Fall, 48% of interactions during the Spring) or spelling (37.5% of interactions during the Fall, 36% of interactions during the Spring) skills. Relatively few experiences focused on supporting children’s composing skills (i.e., their ability to communicate; 6.5% of interactions during the Fall, 16% of interactions during the Spring). Data suggest that teachers often set their writing environments early in the school year and do little to provide additional experiences across the year, despite indications of children’s growing writing skills and interest in writing.

        Faster-than-real-time Hybrid Automotive Underwater Glider Simulation for Ocean Mapping

        The introduction of autonomous underwater gliders (AUGs) specifically addresses the reduction of operational costs that were previously prohibited with conventional autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) using a scaling-down design philosophy by utilizing the characteristics of autonomous drifters to far extend operation duration and coverage. Long-duration, wide-area missions raise the cost and complexity of in-water testing for novel approaches to autonomous mission planning. As a result, a simulator that supports the rapid design, development, and testing of autonomy solutions across a wide range using software-in-the-loop simulation at faster-than-real-time speeds becomes critical. This paper describes a faster-than-real-time AUG simulator that can support high-resolution bathymetry for a wide variety of ocean environments, including ocean currents, various sensors, and vehicle dynamics. On top of the de facto standard ROS-Gazebo framework and open-sourced underwater vehicle simulation packages, features specific to AUGs for ocean mapping are developed. For vehicle dynamics, the next-generation hybrid autonomous underwater gliders (Hybrid-AUGs) operate with both the buoyancy engine and the thrusters to improve navigation for bathymetry mappings, e.g., line trajectory, are is implemented since because it can also describe conventional AUGs without the thrusters. The simulation results are validated with experiments while operating at 120 times faster than the real-time.

        Transformative Mediation at Work: Employee and Supervisor Perceptions on USPS REDRESS Program

        The United States Postal Services (USPS) has implemented a nation‐wide mediation program called REDRESS. The program uses the transformative model of mediation which prohibits the mediator from taking a directive or an evaluative approach in mediation, but instead requires that mediators seek to empower the parties and generate opportunities for recognition of each others' perspectives. This study examines the perceptions of participants about procedural justice under the early implementation of the transformative mediation model by analyzing exit surveys. This study finds that a great majority of both employees and supervisors are satisfied with the mediation process and the mediators. This result holds even for employees whose disputes were not resolved at the mediation. In addition, this study finds that the mediation process and individual mediator performance are significant contributors to outcome satisfaction. Based on these results, this study concludes that the transformative model of mediation, which focuses not on resolving the immediate issue but on the empowerment and recognition of participants, is a promising alternative to traditional routes of dispute resolution in the public workplace.

      • Impact of structural disorder on the magnetic ordering and magnetocaloric response of amorphous Gd-based microwires

        <P>We have studied the impact of structural disorder on the magnetic ordering and magnetocaloric response of amorphous Gd68Ni32 and Gd53Al24Co20Zr3 microwires. We find that the presence of structural disorder significantly broadens the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic (PM-FM) transition and the temperature-dependent magnetic entropy change, while the nature of the second-order magnetic transition and long-range ferromagnetic order are not essentially affected by this effect. The large magnetic moment of Gd and the presence of the long-range ferromagnetic order are believed to result in a large magnetic entropy change, which together with the broadening of the PM-FM transition due to structural disorder contribute to a large refrigerant capacity. The excellent magnetocaloric properties of the amorphous microwires make them very promising candidates for active magnetic refrigeration. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.</P>

        3D Printing Based on Material Extrusion to Create Surface Patterns on Textile Fabrics

        3D printing technology has been developing rapidly in recent years. This technology is extensively used for producing prototypes of products and their designs with a wide range of materials in the manufacturing industry. The Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) process uses the extrusion of molten thermoplastic materials through heated printing nozzle to create design objects layer by layer. The current research was to develop 3D printing technology on textile fabrics to create surface design based on FDM process using the Ultimake 3D printer. Printing parameters play an important role for printing on fabrics specially to achieve strong adhesion between the printed patterns and the surface of the fabrics. This research developed a method for assessing the attachment strength in the interface between the printed objects and the surface of fabrics. The effect of the initial setting distance between the printing nozzle and the printing platform on the performance of 3D printed fabrics was investigated. The research work demonstrated the ability to create different design patterns in 3D on the fabrics with excellent durability to washing, which shows potential for the commercial application in fashion industry.

        Screening Carica papaya native promoters driving stilbene synthase expression in Arabidopsis thaliana for resveratrol glucoside (piceid) synthesis

        The use of promoters for downstream metabolic engineering in plants requires efficiently screening their transcriptional strength and the resulting levels of the desired metabolite. Carica papaya is a complex slowgrowing tropical tree, which is difficult to rapidly screen for promoter activity. Therefore, we used the simple model system, Arabidopsis thaliana (Columbia), to compare the effectiveness of two native papaya promoters (Cp9 and Cp29) with a positive control (CaMV35S promoter), in driving transcription of the stilbene synthase gene (Vst1) and production of the phytoalexin trans-resveratrol glucoside (piceid). Single transgene copy numbers were verified via Southern analysis of at least three independent transgenic lines for each promoter construct. The Cp29 and control CaMV35S promoters consistently produced high Vst1 mRNA levels, whereas Vst1 mRNA was 50–60 % less in the Cp9:Vst1 lines. The evolutionarily related chalcone synthase (CHS) gene produced 20 and 40 % less mRNAs relative to WT in the Cp29:Vst1 and 35S:Vst1 lines, respectively, but was unchanged in the Cp9:Vst1 lines. The transgenic lines accumulated piceid as identified through RP-HPLC and tandem mass spectrometry. Piceid levels were the highest in the 35S:Vst1 followed by Cp29:Vst1 and Cp9:Vst1 in the studied tissues. No overt deleterious phenotypes were observed in the Cp9:Vst1 and Cp29:Vst1 lines; however, 35S:Vst1 produced smaller plants. The levels of secondary metabolites (anthocyanins) and seed pigments (tannins) decreased in the CaMV35S:Vst1 and Cp29:Vst1 lines, likely due to competition between CHS and stilbene synthase for precursors p-coumaroyl- and malonyl-CoA. The Cp29:Vst1 expression in Arabidopsis produced adequate levels of piceid for future disease-resistance studies.
