        Up to recently severe pedestrian injury and death cases are seldom decreased because the structure of vehicles are increasingly stiffened to protect the driver and passenger. To overcome this problem, in this study the active hood lift system is developed composed of detecting sensor, algorithm, ECU and the actuator which lifts the hood. The operating time and the function of the discrimination of the pedestrian during impact are checked out after the developed system is integrated into the vehicles. Finally, the distinct decreasing of child headform injury could be identified through the EURO-NCAP headform tests and CAE simulations.

        <P>Strained-layer multiquantum-well distributed-feedback (SL-MQW-DFB) lasers at a wavelength of 1.55 μm operating from −40°C to 85°C without any coolers are demonstrated. The average value of IMD3 at 1.8 GHz and 5 mW operating conditions was −71 dBc, and the RIN at 2 mW was measured as 151 dB/Hz.         1998년도 대구지역 법의 부검 통계

        This is a report revealing statical cause of death brought to the department of forensic medicine, Kyungpook National University School of Medicine based on the result of autopsy. The summary of result is as follows. 1. The number of autopsy made during 1998 were 356, of these 225 cases(63.2%) were male, and 131(36.8%) were female. 2. 30's, 40's, 20's and 50's was the order according to the number of violent death, and in case of natural death, 30's, 50's, 40's was the oder. 3. August is the period during which autopsies are made most, with December placing second, and the other months are similar. 4. In distributing deaths by cases, violent deaths were 241 cases(67.7%), natural deaths were 105(29.5%) and unknown cases were 10(2.8%). 5. For the violent deaths, deaths due to injury were 128 cases(5301%), asphyxia were 63(26.1%), intoxications were 30(12.4%) and abnormal temperature were 19(7.9%). According to relationship with deaths, homicide is outstanding with 101 cases(41.9%), while suicide and accidental death was the same with 62 cases(25.7%). 6. for death due to injury, death due to blunt injury were 48 cases, sharp force injury which was used most in case of homicide were 43. 7. For the asphyxia, drowning is the most 20 cases, 13 cases of which is accidental death. 8. The deaths of intoxication is the largest part of suicide, and most of intoxication were involved in agrochemical. 9. Of 105 cases of natural death, deaths due to the disease of cardiovascular system were 51 cases(48.6%), of which deaths due to myocardial infraction were 35 cases. 10. Of all autopsy, alcohol intake were checked out in 90 cases and 21 cases of medical controversy took places. 11. Of all violent deaths, the cases involved in the discord between man and woman occupied percentage of 9.6. Of these, homicides were 18 cases, with all sacrificed being females, and of 16 cases of suicide, 13 cases were female.

      • IL-17A induces osteoblast differentiation by activating JAK2/STAT3 in ankylosing spondylitis

        <P><B>Background</B></P><P>IL-17A has recently emerged as a potential target that regulates the extensive inflammation and abnormal bone formation observed in ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Blocking IL-17A is expected to inhibit bony ankylosis. Here, we investigated the effects of anti IL-17A agents in AS.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>TNFα, IL-17A, and IL-12/23 p40 levels in serum and synovial fluid from patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis (OA), or healthy controls (HC) were measured by ELISA. Bone tissue samples were obtained at surgery from the facet joints of ten patients with AS and ten control (Ct) patients with noninflammatory spinal disease. The functional relevance of IL-17A, biological blockades, Janus kinase 2 (JAK2), and non-receptor tyrosine kinase was assessed in vitro with primary bone-derived cells (BdCs) and serum from patients with AS.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Basal levels of IL-17A and IL-12/23 p40 in body fluids were elevated in patients with AS. JAK2 was also highly expressed in bone tissue and primary BdCs from patients with AS. Furthermore, addition of exogenous IL-17A to primary Ct-BdCs promoted the osteogenic stimulus-induced increase in ALP activity and mineralization. Intriguingly, blocking IL-17A with serum from patients with AS attenuated ALP activity and mineralization in both Ct and AS-BdCs by inhibiting JAK2 phosphorylation and downregulating osteoblast-involved genes. Moreover, JAK2 inhibitors effectively reduced JAK2-driven ALP activity and JAK2-mediated events.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Our findings indicate that IL-17A regulates osteoblast activity and differentiation via JAK2/STAT3 signaling.         Myricetin Induces Apoptosis of Human Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer Cells via Mitochondria Dysfunction

        <P>Aim: Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy, with an increasing incidence worldwide. Most thyroid cancers are well differentiated and have a favorable outcome. However, undifferentiated thyroid cancers are one of the most lethal human malignancies. Anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) accounts for 2% of all thyroid cancers, and its median survival rate is low. ATC is responsible for more than one-third of thyroid cancer-related deaths. Myricetin is a flavonol compound found in walnuts, herbs, and various berries and is known to induce apoptotic death of various types of cancer cells. However, an anticancer effect of myricetin against human anaplastic thyroid cancer (HATCs) cells has not been demonstrated. Materials and Methods: In the present study, the anticancer effects and mechanism of action of myricetin were examined using SNU-80 HATC cells. SNU-80 HATC cells were treated with various concentrations of myricetin and compared with untreated controls. Results: Myricetin significantly reduced HATC cell proliferation, by approximately 70%. A substantial proportion of dead cells exhibited arrest in the sub-G(1) phase. Myricetin also exhibited cytotoxicity and induced DNA condensation in SNU-80 HATC cells in a dose-dependent manner. The mechanism of myricetin-induced cell death involved an increase in the activation of caspase cascades and the Bax:Bcl-2 ratio at a concentration of 100 mu M. Myricetin also induced the release of apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) from mitochondria into the cytosol and altered the mitochondrial membrane potential. Conclusion: Our results indicate that myricetin is a potent inducer of HATC cell death and may thus prove useful in the development of therapeutic agents for HATC.</P>

      • Automatic human body segmentation based on feature extraction

        <B>Purpose</B> - Automatic segmentation of unorganized 3D human body scan data was developed without heuristic specified values. It was reliable in finding the upper body's primary landmarks. The paper aims to discuss these issues. <B>Design/methodology/approach</B> - Quasi boundary point sequence (QBPS) was defined to find the boundary of the human body. Body scan data were categorized by clustering the features extracted from the predefined QBPS. A non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) approximation was used to detect the landmarks of the segmented upper torso. <B>Findings</B> - The segmentation method based on feature extraction was reliable regardless of the scan data's fidelity. It was verified that the landmark detection method introduced in this work is more robust than a previous method that utilizes the position of point data. <B>Originality/value</B> - There are several studies of human body segmentation and body landmark detection. This work, however, aims to automate fully segmentation and develop more reliable searching methods. Unlike previous work that uses only 2D human body information, this work uses 3D body information. Furthermore, previous landmark searching methods were superseded by more robust methods applying NURBS approximations.

      • Heat Dissipation of Transparent Graphene Defoggers

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>In spite of recent successful demonstrations of flexible and transparent graphene heaters, the underlying heat‐transfer mechanism is not understood due to the complexity of the heating system. Here, graphene/glass defoggers are fabricated and the dynamic response of the temperature as a function of input electrical power is measured. The graphene/glass defoggers reveal shorter response times than Cr/glass defoggers. Furthermore, the saturated temperature of the graphene/glass defoggers is higher than for Cr/glass defoggers at a given input electrical power. The observed dynamic response to temperature is well‐fitted to the power‐balance model. The response time of graphene/glass defogger is shorter by 44% than that of the Cr/glass defogger. The convective heat‐transfer coefficient of graphene is 12.4 × 10<SUP>−4</SUP> W cm<SUP>−2</SUP> °C<SUP>−1</SUP>, similar to that of glass (11.1 × 10<SUP>−4</SUP> W cm<SUP>−2</SUP> °C<SUP>−1</SUP>) but smaller than that of chromium (17.1 × 10<SUP>−4</SUP> W cm<SUP>−2</SUP> °C<SUP>−1</SUP>). The graphene‐based system reveals the lowest convective heat‐transfer coefficient due to its ideal flat surface compared to its counterparts of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO)‐based systems.</P>

        Increased Risk of Vitiligo Following Anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor Therapy: A 10-Year Population-Based Cohort Study

        <P>Anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha (anti-TNF) therapy is used to treat a wide range of chronic inflammatory conditions. However, there has been an increasing number of reports of development of vitiligo and alopecia areata secondary to anti-TNF therapy. In this study, we investigated the risks of vitiligo and alopecia areata in patients with ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease, or ulcerative colitis, who were treated with or without anti-TNF therapy using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Claims database from 2007 to 2016. The study comprised 11,442 patients treated with anti-TNF agents (anti-TNF group), and an equal number of age-, sex-, and disease- matched patients treated without anti-TNF agents (unexposed group). Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare the risks of vitiligo and alopecia areata between the two groups. A significantly increased risk of vitiligo (hazard ratio =1.99, 95% confidence interval =1.06-3.75) was observed in the anti-TNF group compared to the unexposed group (5.9/10,000 person-years vs. 2.5/10,000 person-years). In subgroup analyses, younger patients and those treated with etanercept showed higher risks of vitiligo. The risk of alopecia areata was not significantly different between the two groups. Our results provide insight on the role of cytokine imbalance in the pathogenesis of vitiligo.</P>

        대사억제시 세포밖 K 이온의 축적 및 그에 따른 활동전압의 단축은 세포내 ATP 농도가 임계수준 이하로 감소될 때 활성화되는 KATP 통로의 활성에 의해 일어나며, K-통로에 대한 여러가지 조절물질들을 이용하여 KATP 통로의 활성을 조절함으로써 심근허혈-재관류 후에 오는 심근손상이나 심근부정맥의 예방이나 치료에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다. To estimate the properties of KATP channels and their modulation by intracellular and extracellular factors, rabbit ventricular myocytes were voltage and current clamped by a conventional patch clamp method at a temperature of 37℃ or 27℃. Metabolic inhibition was simulated by either application of metabolic inhibitor (2,4-dinitrophenol, DNP) or excised membrane patches (reduction of intracelluar concentration of ATP as a common final pathway). DNP shortened the action potential and this shortening resulted from an enhanced speed of repolarization of the plateau phase. Glibenclamide, a specific blocker of KATP channel, prevented the DNP-induced shortening of the action potential and the DNP-induced single channel currents. The KATP channel activity was spontaneously active in the absence of ATP. It was closed by increasing [ATP]i. Glibenclamide (30 M) and various K+ channel blockers reversibly prevented channel opening. The [ATP]i causing half-maximal inhibition of current through KATP channels (KA) was 70 M and Hill coefficient (n) was 1.2. From the above results it could be suggested that the shortening of the action potential during metabolic inhibition is related to activation of KATP channels. Furthermore, opening or blocking the channel by the therapeutic potential of K+ channel modulators may be beneficial or detrimental to the subsequent recovery of the heart after brief of prolonged periods of ischemia followed reperfusion, and modulation of KATP channel activity may be antiarrhythmic or arrhythmgenic primarily depending on the type of cardiac arrhythmia.
