Becoming Global Citizens through Global Literature: A Case Study of English Teacher Candidates in Korea

Chee Hye Lee(Chee Hye Lee) 한국영어어문교육학회 2022 영어어문교육 Vol.28 No.4

This study investigates the ways in which English teacher candidates in Korea can cultivate global citizenship through reading and responding to global literature. While reading Kashmira Sheth’s Keeping Corner, a story of a young Indian girl navigating her life as a widow, they were invited to build their own intercultural understanding through participating in various critical literacy activities. Employing a qualitative research method, this study analyzes the texts that they produced during the class. The findings reveal that through self-reflexivity they were able to move beyond a surfacelevel conceptualization of culture usually represented as specific artifacts or traditional practices and then recognize the dynamic factors that play a role in constructing their cultural identities. In addition, they were able to make personal, local, and global relevance and significance and thereby identify some issues that local and global communities are currently facing. Although many raised their awareness on global citizenship by deconstructing the self-other dichotomy and recognizing multifaceted aspects of one’s lived experience, the study also identifies some challenges in unraveling deeply rooted ideologies and superiority, as well as apathy toward local and global relevance and significance in a one-semester course. Finally, this study calls for more integration of global citizenship education into teacher education programs.

Surgical Management of Edentulous Atrophic Mandible Fractures in the Elderly

Chee, Nam Seok,Park, Seong June,Son, Min Ho,Lee, Eoy Jung,Lee, Soo Woon Korean Association of Maxillofacial Plastic and Re 2014 Maxillofacial Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Vol.36 No.5

Fractures of the mandible occur with a greater frequency in the elderly. This study reports three cases of edentulous atrophic mandible fracture in elderly patients treated with open reduction technique. Three patients who presented with edentulous atrophic mandible fractures underwent surgical management using open reduction and internal fixation. After treatment, clinical evaluations and postoperative complications were examined with postoperative x-ray. Patients were followed with clinical and radiographic examinations. In the postoperative clinical evaluation, two male patients healed well, but one female patient complained of pain and swelling. In radiographic examinations, no union delay or lack of fusion was observed in the edentulous area. Open reduction technique is a viable treatment option for the edentulous atrophic mandible fractures in geriatric patients.

Ultra Long Construct Minimally Invasive Spinal Stabilization Using Percutaneous Pedicle Screws in the Treatment of Symptomatic Multicentric Spinal Metastasis

Chee Kean Lee,Chris Yin Wei Chan,Mun Keong Kwan 대한척추외과학회 2015 Asian Spine Journal Vol.9 No.6

Managing multiple level spinal metastases is challenging. We report the case of a 58-year-old female with advanced lung cancer who presented with multiple pathological fractures of the thoracic spine (T5, T6, T7, and T8 vertebrae). She was treated with palliative radiotherapy. Her resting pain improved, but the instability pain persisted. One month later, she had a trivial fall leading to a pathological fracture of the L2 vertebra with cauda equine syndrome. The patient was treated surgically with minimally invasive decompression of the L2 and with percutaneous instrumented stabilization using an ultra-long construct from T3 to L5 (15 spinal levels), spanning the previously radiated zone and the decompression site. Postoperatively, she had significant improvements in pain and neurology. There were no surgical complications. Ultra long construct minimally invasive spinal stabilization is the ideal approach for symptomatic multicentric spinal metastasis with poor prognostic scores. Using this technique, the goals of spinal stabilization and direct neural decompression can be achieved with minimal morbidity.

Surgical Morphometry of C1 and C2 Vertebrae: A Three-Dimensional Computed Tomography Analysis of 180 Chinese, Indian, and Malay Patients

Chee Kean Lee,Tiam Siong Tan,Chris Yin Wei Chan,Mun Keong Kwan 대한척추외과학회 2017 Asian Spine Journal Vol.11 No.2

Study Design: Clinical imaging study. Purpose: To study the surgical morphometry of C1 and C2 vertebrae in Chinese, Indian, and Malay patients. Overview of Literature: C1 lateral mass and C2 pedicle screw fixation is gaining popularity. However, there is a lack of C1–C2 morphometric data for the Asian population. Methods: Computed tomography analysis of 180 subjects (60 subjects each belonging to Chinese, Indian, and Malay populations) using simulation software was performed. Length and angulations of C1 lateral mass (C1LM) and C2 pedicle (C2P) screws were assessed. Results: The predicted C1LM screw length was between 23.2 and 30.2 mm. The safe zone of trajectories was within 11.0°±7.7° laterally to 29.1°±6.2° medially in the axial plane and 37.0°±10.2° caudally to 20.9°±7.8° cephalically in the sagittal plane. The shortest and longest predicted C2P screw lengths were 22.1±2.8 mm and 28.5±3.2 mm, respectively. The safe trajectories were from 25.1° to 39.3° medially in the axial plane and 32.3° to 45.9° cephalically in the sagittal plane. Conclusions: C1LM screw length was 23–30 mm with the axial safe zone from 11° laterally to 29° medially and sagittal safe zone at 21° cephalically. C2P screw length was 22–28 mm with axial safe zone from 26° to 40° medially and sagittal safe zone from 32° to 46° cephalically. These data serve as an important reference for Chinese, Indian, and Malay populations during C1–C2 instrumentation.

      • Development of Transgenic Peppers Tolerant to Disease and A Roadmap towards Commercialization

Chee Hark Harn 한국작물학회 2007 한국작물학회 학술발표대회 논문집 Vol.2007 No.11

The virus infection to pepper crops has caused a heavy loss in productivity. In Korea, CMV (cucumber mosaic virus) is the most frequent occurrence virus followed by PepMoV (pepper mottle virus) and TSWV (tomato spotted wilt virus). The total occurrence of pepper infection from these viruses is over 80%. Therefore, if we could develop a pepper variety tolerant to these viruses, then we would protect a large portion of pepper cultivation and production from the virus damage. In order to develop tolerant peppers against these viruses, we have set up a transformation system of pepper using Agrobacterium with viral genes such as CP (coat protein) gene and HC-Pro (helper component-protease) gene. Genes used for constructing transgenic peppers are CMVP0-CP, CMVP1-CP, PepMoV-CP, CMV-CP::PepMoV-CP, PepMoV-HC-pro-C/Ri, TSWV-CP and so on. A large number of transgenic peppers transformed with those genes was tested for resistance to viral pathogens. We have found that CMVP0-CP, CMVP1-CP peppers were tolerant to a new CMVP1 pathogen and finally T3 peppers highly tolerant to CMVP1 pathogen were selected. The selected T3 peppers were tolerant under field test. In addition, transformed peppers highly tolerant to PepMoV were also selected. Here in Korea, none of the GM crops has ever been approved for safety testing yet. Although researchers in universities and national institutes have developed tens of GM crops during the last 10 years or so, only a few crops have been recently tested for the risk assessment. Unfortunately, it will take several years until any GM crops are on the Korean market. In other words, the present status of GM crop development in Korea is far behind worldwide levels in terms of research and development, which is not readily understood considering the fact that this country has at least 10 years history of GM crop biotechnology and 30 years of experience of tissue culture technology. What were the problems? Why has the crop biotechnology not been adopted sooner? Generally the tardiness shown by business in adopting GM crop biotechnology is caused by many factors: academical frontline, research funding, professional labor, systems for GM cultivation and risk assessment, understanding and help from the public, industrial success, professional leaders on GM crop development, and so on. Among these, the most critical aspect in Korean science community is the lack of industrial pipeline and interest from seed companies. In most cases, the driving force behind business comes from the private sector and we do not have private companies that are able to conduct the complicated biotechnology. A major question we are holding is what has to be done if we are to catch up in the race for the new green industry promoting people’s health, increasing food availability and protecting natural environment. Here I discuss about the successful events as to GM peppers and what the roadmap for commercialization would be.

Analysis of the distribution of lead concentration under steady state conditions in urban multimedia environment

Chee Burm Shin,Wonjin Jeon,Jong Ho Kim,곽병규,이종협,Jun Hee Lee,Woon Gi Lee,Sun Woo Lee,Hyeon Soo Park 한국화학공학회 2008 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.25 No.6

The environmental contamination problems caused by accelerated industrialization are becoming increasingly important issues. It is necessary to estimate the distributions of the contaminants and to recognize the risks to our environment. The behavior of volatile organic compounds (VOC) can be analyzed with the concept of fugacity. However, it is difficult to simulate the fate of heavy metals with this concept, because their vapor pressure is extremely small or unknown. Therefore, the aquivalence (from “equivalent aqueous”) theory, which was derived from the fugacity theory, is utilized to establish a mathematical model and to analyze the fate of heavy metals in an urban multimedia system. The target heavy metal is lead and the target region is around Jungrang stream in Seoul. The multimedia is composed of air, water, sediment, soil and vegetation. To verify the proposed mathematical model, the modeling results were compared with the measurement data obtained from the Korea Testing and Research Institute.
