Investigation of methods of reducing the number of pinhole defects in glossy-opaque floor tile glaze by modifying glaze properties

Ayse Tunali 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2014 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.15 No.4

Improvement of surface quality of glossy-opaque floor tile glazes by decreasing pinhole problem was the main purpose of this study. Glossy-opaque floor tile glaze was produced by mixing three different frit compositions. Effects of frit compositions on glaze surface properties were investigated by thermal analysis. Two hypotheses were improved and applied in terms of the analysis results. It was found that pinhole problems can be solved by optimizing softening point of glaze composition and glossyopaque glaze with enhanced functional and aesthetic features can be obtained by homogenously distributed nano size crystals

Love as a Contact Zone in Theresa Hak Kyung Cha`s Dictee (1982)

( Ayse Naz Bulamur ) 성균관대학교 동아시아학술원 2014 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.14 No.2

In Theresa Hak Kyung Cha`s (1951-1982) fragmented, multi-lingual, and non-linear novel Dictee, love is a contact zone that brings together Korean, French, Greek, and unidentified female characters who are silenced and oppressed in patriarchal societies. By connecting fictional and historical women across time and space, the novel shows how love serves as a political tool that endorses patriarchal, religious, and nationalist ideologies: Patriotic love connects French and Korean national heroines Yu Guan Soon and Joan of Arc; the French Saint Therese`s unconditional love for Jesus is juxtaposed with an unnamed wife`s slave-like position in marriage; and maternal love brings together an unnamed Korean mother and her Korean-American daughter with the Greek goddesses Persephone and Demeter. The novel shows how female sexual desire has been repressed and domesticated as women channel their love towards their nation, family, and Christ.

Interval finite element analysis of masonry-infilled walls

Ayse Erdolen,Bilge Doran 국제구조공학회 2012 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.44 No.1

This paper strongly addresses to the problem of the mechanical systems in which parameters are uncertain and bounded. Interval calculation is used to find sharp bounds of the structural parameters for infilled frame system modeled with finite element method. Infill walls are generally treated as nonstructural elements considerably to improve the lateral stiffness, strength and ductility of the structure together with the frame elements. Because of their complex nature, they are often neglected in the analytical model of building structures. However, in seismic design, ignoring the effect of infill wall in a numerical model does not accurately simulate the physical behavior. In this context, there are still some uncertainties in mechanical and also geometrical properties in the analysis and design procedure of infill walls. Structural uncertainties can be studied with a finite element formulation to determine sharp bounds of the structural parameters such as wall thickness and Young's modulus. In order to accomplish this sharp solution as much as possible, interval finite element approach can be considered, too. The structural parameters can be considered as interval variables by using the interval number, thus the structural stiffness matrix may be divided into the product of two parts which correspond to the interval values and the deterministic value.

Removable Partial Denture in a Cleft Lip and Palate Patient: A Case Report

Ayse Mese,Eylem Ozdemir 대한의학회 2008 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.23 No.5

This clinical report described the oral rehabilitation of a cleft lip and palate patient with removable partial denture. Although implant-supported fixed treatment was presented as part of the optimum treatment plan to achieve the best result, the patient declined this option due to the significant financial burden. Persons with a congenital or craniofacial defect are unique, and oral problems must be evaluated individually to the most ideal treatment. The changes in appearance, function, and psychological wellbeing have an enormous impact on patients’ personal lives and are rewarding for the maxillofacial prosthodontist providing this care.

Intravitreal Dexamethasone Implantation in Intravitreal Bevacizumab Treatment-Resistant Pseudophakic Cystoid Macular Edema

AYSE GUL KOCAK ALTINTAS,Cagri Ilhan 대한안과학회 2019 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.33 No.3

Purpose: To evaluate the changes in visual acuity (VA) and central macular thickness (CMT) after intravitrealdexamethasone (IVD) implantation in intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) treatment-resistant cases with pseudophakiccystoid macular edema (PCME). Methods: This study included 10 PCME cases who underwent uneventful phacoemulsification and intraocularlens implantation with similar methods and six PCME cases referred to our hospital for treatment oflow VA after cataract surgery. Due to the persistence of PCME, both topical steroid and anti-inflammatorymedication were administered first, followed by IVB injection. IVD implantation was performed for all IVBtreatment-resistant cases. VA and CMT values were compared before and at three months after the first IVDimplantation. Results: The mean VA values before and at 3 months after the first IVD implantation were 0.69 ± 0.19 logarithmof the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) (1.50 to 0.10 logMAR) and 0.26 ± 0.07 logMAR (1.00 to 0.00logMAR), respectively (p < 0.001). The mean CMT was 476.13 ± 135.13 mm (314 to 750 mm) and 294.06 ±15.26 mm (222 to 480 mm), respectively (p < 0.001). The mean number of implanted IVD was 1.44 ± 0.89 (1to 4) and the mean follow-up time was 7.4 ± 4.6 months (6 to 24 months). After IVD implantation therapy, themean VA and CMT values were 0.19 ± 0.05 logMAR (0.70 to 0.00 logMAR) and 268.38 ± 31.35 mm (217 to351 mm), respectively. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to show the efficacy of IVD implantationeven after repeated IVB injections in treatment-resistant PCME. IVD implantation is both a safe and effectivemethod for decreasing PCME after both uneventful and complicated cataract surgery.

Evaluation of high resolution computed tomography findings of cystic fibrosis

( Ayse Senay Sasihuseyinoglu ),( Derya Ufuk Altıntas ),( Sureyya Soyupak ),( Dilek Dogruel ),( Mustafa Yılmaz ),( Mahir Serbes ),( Gulsah Duyuler ) 대한내과학회 2019 The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine Vol.34 No.2

Background/Aims: Morphological changes due to lung disease in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) were evaluated using high resolution computed tomography (HRCT), and the HRCT scores obtained using the Bhalla scoring system were correlated with those obtained using clinical and laboratory indicators. Methods: Medical records of 28 children with CF who underwent chest CT in Department of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, Cukurova University Balcali Hospital between March 2011 and January 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic data and physical examination, respiratory cultures, pulmonary function tests, and chest HRCT findings were evaluated. Patients were divided into the following two groups according to their forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) values: normal FEV1 (≥ 80% of predicted values) and low FEV1 (< 80% of predicted values). Deep throat or sputum cultures were evaluated for the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PsA) and other bacteria. HRCT scans were scored using the Bhalla scoring system. Results: No significant correlation was found between the Bhalla scores and sex, age group, or height percentiles. Significant relationships were found between the Bhalla score and weight (p = 0.036) and body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.032) percentiles below the third percentile, bacterial growth in the sputum/ deep throat cultures (p = 0.009), and presence of PsA (p = 0.004). Moreover, a significant correlation was found between the Bhalla score and FEV1 (r = -0.315, p = 0.0272), forced vital capacity (FVC; r = -0.381, p = 0.0178), forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of FVC (r = -0.229, p = 0.0431), and BMI (r = -3.368, p = 0.050). Conclusions: Chest HRCT is an important diagnostic tool for the pulmonary evaluation of children with CF.

Design, modelling and experimentation of a novel compliant translational dwell mechanism

Ayse Tekes,Hongkuan Lin,Kevin McFall 대한기계학회 2019 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.33 No.7

A partially compliant novel translational double dwell mechanism is presented in this article. The designed mechanism consists of initially straight and preloaded pinned-pinned compliant links, rigid crank, slider-rail system and a DC motor. Slider doesn’t move until the critical buckling load is achieved and then snaps to its maximum and returns back to initial position as the crank completes a full rotation. Motion behavior of elastic members depending on the geometry and loading are investigated using Elastica theory. Kinematic analysis and dynamical model are obtained by representing the compliant pinned-pinned members as translational springs using polynomial formulation method. Mechanism behavior is also analyzed in Adams FlexView. Mechanism is built by 3D printing the flexible parts using polylactic acid (PLA). Displacement of the slider along with the deformation of buckling beams are recorded and deflection shapes are detected by machine vision measurement while the crank is subjected to complete rotation. Slider position is also recorded by a laser displacement sensor. Dynamical model results are validated by the experimental setup, machine vision measurement and Adams simulations.

      • Active School Travel in istanbul: environmental factors influencing walking as mode of access to/from school

        Ayse Ozbil,Demet Yesiltepe,Gorsev Argin 한국생태환경건축학회 2020 한국생태환경건축학회 학술발표대회 논문집 Vol.20 No.2

The aim of this study is to determine builtand social environmental factors shaping walking as mode of access to/from school. Within this scope, randomly selected 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students (ages 12-14) from 20 secondary schools (N=1954) in Istanbul, Turkey were asked to complete questionnaires that asked for their full address, age, primary mode of commuting to school, and if not actively commuting, the perceived barriers to active school travel (AST). Those walking to school were asked to draw their typical route on a map. Their parents (N=1118) were also asked to report the primary reasons for disallowing their children to walk, along with their socio-economic characteristics. Walkability of home-environments (800mt buffers) was measured through a syntactic connectivity measure: global Integration. The findings show that increased home-neighbourhood walkability is associated with increased AST rates between home and school, considering the interaction between walkability, income and education. The results of questionnaires indicate that there is consensus between students’ and parents’ perceived barriers to walking. For both groups the primary builtenvironment factor obstructing walking is the distance between home and school while the primary social environmental factor is the perception of neighbourhood crime (deserted streets). Furthermore, some students reported that they are willing to walk to/from school, but that their parents would not allow them. This finding supports the argument that the main factor in shaping walking behaviour among children is parental perceptions of the neighbourhood environment. Hence, attempting to change parental perceptions through pedestrian-oriented design interventions is crucial in promoting AST.

Processing of in-situ SiC reinforced AlN based composites

        Ayse Kalemtas,Gursoy Arslan,Pinar Kaya,Servet Turan,Ferhat Kara 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2018 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.19 No.2

In this study, highly dense (>97%) in-situ SiC reinforced AlN based ceramic-metal composites were produced by pressurelessreactive infiltration of 7075 aluminium alloys into porous α-Si3N4, α-Si3N4 + 4 wt. % carbon and α-Si3N4 + 8 wt. % carbonpreforms at 1400 oC for 4 hours under an argon gas atmosphere. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopyanalysis of the designed α-Si3N4-Al and α-Si3N4-C-Al composites revealed that Si3N4 was completely consumed during theinfiltration process via reacting with the Al alloy and resulted in the formation of AlN and Si phases. The aim of the currentwork was to introduce a novel method to produce in-situ SiC reinforced AlN based ceramic-metal composites. Composites withrelatively low metal contents were successfully fabricated through incorporating active carbon to the starting α-Si3N4 powder, which in turn consumes the liberated metallic Si phase in the system via chemical reactions leading to the formation of SiCceramic phase. Formation of in-situ SiC, AlN and metallic Si were also confirmed by analytical transmission electronmicroscopy investigations.
