Mechanical Properties of CVD Diamond
Yoshikawa, Masanori,Hirata, Atsushi The Korean Ceramic Society 1996 The Korean journal of ceramics Vol.2 No.4
This paper focuses the strength and wear resistance of CVD diamond films. The strength of free-standing CVD diamond films synthesized by microwave plasm CVD, DC plasma CVD, RF plasma CVD and arc discharge plasma jet CVD has been measured by three-point bending test. The wear resistance of CVD diamod films has been evaluated by the pin-on-disk type testing. diamond films coated on the base of sintered tungsten carbide pin by hot filament CVD have been rubbed with a sintered diamond disk in muddy water. Volume removed wear of CVD diamond has been compared with stellite, WC alloy and bearing steel.
Profile Measurements of Micro-aspheric Surfaces Using an Air-bearing Stylus with a Microprobe
Atsushi Shibuya,Wei Gao,Yasuo Yoshikawa,Bing-Feng Ju,Satoshi Kiyono 한국정밀공학회 2007 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.8 No.2
A novel scanning probe measurement system was developed to enable precise profile measurements of micro-aspheric surfaces. An air-bearing stylus with a microprobe was used to perform the surface profile scanning. The new system worked in a contact mode and had the capability of measuring micro-aspheric surfaces with large tilt angles and complex profiles. Due to limitations resulting from the contact mode, such as possible damage caused by the contact force and lateral resolution restrictions from the curvature of the probe tip, several system improvements were implemented. An air bearing was used to suspend the shaft of the probe to reduce the contact force, enabling fine adjustments of the contact force by changing the air pressure. The movement of the shaft was measured by a linear encoder with a scale attached to the actual shaft to avoid Abbe errors. A 50-㎛-diameter glass sphere was bonded to the tip of the probe to improve the lateral resolution of the system. The maximum contact force of the probe was 10 mN The shaft was capable of holding the probe continuously if the contact force was less than 40 mN, and the resolution of the probe could be as high as 10 ㎚. The performance of the new scanning probe measurement system was verified by experimental data.

The radial particle flux induced by drift-type fluctuations is observed by use of a gold neutral beam probe in the tandem mirror GAMMA 10. When the drift waves are excited in the plasma, the measured phase difference between the density and potential fluctuations is not zero; the radial profile of the phase difference is not constant. This showed that the radial particle flux had some profile and then the density profile would be varied due to the radial particle transport induced by the fluctuations through the radial particle flux. Experimental results showed the density reduction due to the transport induced by the drift-type fluctuations. The phase difference is an important parameter to decide the radial particle flux. The profiles of the phase difference are measured to understand the decision mechanism of the phase difference. The radial profile of the phase difference is varied by the ion heating power, the density and the potential profiles. As a result, the phase difference had a correlation with the difference between the local drift frequency (the electron diamagnetic drift frequency and the E×B drift frequency) and the observed frequency.

Background/Aims: Bispectral index (BIS) monitors process and display electroencephalographic data are used to assess the depth ofanesthesia. This study retrospectively evaluated the usefulness of BIS monitoring during endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS). Methods: This study included 725 consecutive patients who underwent EUS under sedation with propofol. BIS monitoring was usedin 364 patients and was not used in 361. The following parameters were evaluated: (1) median dose of propofol; (2) respiratory and circulatorydepression; (3) occurrence of body movements; (4) awakening score >8 at the time; and (5) awakening score 2 hours afterleaving the endoscopy room. Results: The BIS group received a significantly lower median dose of propofol than the non-BIS group (159.2 mg vs. 167.5 mg;p=0.015) in all age groups. For patients aged ≥75 years, the reduction in heart rate was significantly lower in the BIS group than in thenon-BIS group (1.2% vs. 9.1%; p=0.023). Moreover, the occurrence of body movements was markedly lower in the BIS group than inthe non-BIS group (8.5% vs. 39.4%; p<0.001). Conclusions: During EUS examination, BIS monitoring is useful for maintaining a constant depth of anesthesia, especially in patients75 years of age or older.
