Patterns of Fractured Discourse in Chaucer's Nun's Priest's Tale

As a writer of narrative, Chaucer is an obvious master. In his earlier works, and in almost all of the Canterbury Tales, the narration of events runs smoothly, the sections are usually clearly distinguished and articulated. What we find in the Nun's Priest's Tale (NPT) is conspicuously different and oddly difficult to categorize or explain. There is certainly a clear enough structure to the basic story; by it we are brought from an introduction through suspense to crisis and resolution, Yet we find a repeated pattern of narrative breakdown: points where the text halts, does an abrupt about-turn, and sets off in another, often almost opposite direction. This is in addition to the familar oddness of the Tale: accumulation of material not related to the fundamental structure and the difficulty of pinpointing any clear sense to it all at the end. These "breakdowns" may be considered deliberate fractures in the NPT's discourse, stylistic features to this one tale, although reflected elsewhere, part of its challenge to the interpreter intent on locating the strategy they represent. In order to illustrate what is meant by a "fracture", it seems best to start with the most striking and well-known example, the point where Chauntecleer offers to translate Latin into English for his wife.

Radical Fashion and Radical Fashion Innovation

This is a study of the related concepts of radical fashion and radical fashion innovation. Radical fashions are defined here as those that may never enter the market at all, and exist primarily on runway shows, in exhibitions and in publicityby contrast, radical fashion innovations may be very successful in the marketplace. Radical fashions represent a clear break from the old designs, as opposed to incremental fashions, which are defined as an extension or evolution of the old designs. Using this definition, radical fashion seems to be at odds with the definition of marketable fashion. Nevertheless, while most radical fashions do not enter the market at all and live only in runway shows, exhibitions, and museums, there are many examples of radical fashion innovations successful in the market. Accordingly, a series of questions rise: What is radical fashion? What is radical fashion innovation? What are the differences and similarities between these, and how are they connected? This study seeks to address these questions, using a foundation developed in the radical product innovation literature. Fashion innovations may be in terms form or function, or style, and can be radical(involving the breaking down of old ideas) or incremental (involving the evolution of new ideas from old ideas). We draw from the radical product innovation literature to build two related models. The first is a model of radical fashion and radical fashion innovation that illustrates the components of both concepts. The second is a model of radical fashion innovation diffusion, drawn from the general product innovation diffusion literature, which explores the evolution of and the connections between these two concepts from the beginning (i.e., the radical fashion) to the end (i.e., success in the mass market). Radical fashion may result in designs that are more suitable for the runway, catalogues, or even museum display, than for actual wear. Radical fashion has sometimes been called “new ideas before their marketing phase.” Radical fashion may successfully enter the market, however, and gain wide acceptance among consumers. All rights reserved. cal fashion innovation is not too different from the transitionfrom invention to innovation, which is familiar to researchers in product innovation. Notable in this transition process is the fact that, for many product innovations, what drives the first customers to purchase (the “Visionaries,” to use Moore’s terminology in his “crossing the chasm” model of innovation diffusion) may be very different from what drives the rest of the market (the “Pragmatists.”). If this “chasm” or divide between the two market segments is not recognized, the innovating firm may find that their product stalls during the diffusion process and never effectively reaches the mass market. In the case of fashion products, visionaries (such as celebrities and the fashion press) prime the market and create favorable word of mouthyet, at the same time, less-radical, wearable designs may be seen on the runway, or may be manufactured for the mass market and sold through department stores, specialty clothing stores, or even discounters. The most successful worldwide designers instinctively know this, and can continuously produce radically innovative fashion which also usually transitions to the mass market successfully.

Yeats, Beckett and Friel : Tradition or Counter-Tradition?

Yeats argued that the mainstream tradition of Irish theatre was realist, and that his drama was the opposite; subjective rather than objective, anti-naturalistic and symbolic. This article traces the profound influence of Yeats's drama on the two greatest Irish playwrights to have emerged since his death: Samuel Beckett and Brian Friel. Beckett was present at the production of Yeats's last staged play, Purgatory, at Dublin's Abbey Theatre in 1938. Its impact is evident in the minimalist staging, stylisation and dramaturgy of Beckett's two great plays in the 1950s: Waiting for Godot and Endgame. Brian Friel quotes Yeats's poetry extensively in his 1966 play, The Loves of Cass McGuire but it is the impression of his dramaturgy that is stronger, in this play and throughout Friel's lengthy career. Particular attention is paid to the presence of live people on stage who turn out to be dead, one of the main ways Friel draws on Yeats to avoid 'the tawdry device of realism'. The article concludes that what was once the counter-tradition of Yeats is now the tradition of Irish theatre.

Fireclay bricks produced from lithomargic clay

Lithomargic clay underlying Awaso bauxite deposits is non-plastic and therefore cannot be used to produce ceramic bodies. The plasticity of lithomargic clay has been enhanced by addition of 20 wt% of clay binder, moulded, dried and fired at 1350 and 1400 o C, respectively. The dwell time was varied from 30 to 120 minutes. Properties such as bulk density, apparent porosity, linear firing shrinkage, and compressive strength were investigated. Crystalline phases after firing were determined using X-ray diffraction technique. The results show the properties measured depends on both the temperature and dwell time. The optimum compressive strength for such bricks could be achieved either by firing at 1350 o C for 120 minutes or at 1400 o C for 30 minutes.

Treatment of Soft Tissue and Bony Spinal Stenosis by a Visualized Endoscopic Transforaminal Technique Under Local Anesthesia

Objective: To analyze long-term clinical outcomes of endoscopic transforaminal foraminoplasty for foraminal stenosis. Methods: Long-term 5-year MacNab outcomes, visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, complications, and unintended aftercare were analyzed in a series of 86 patients who underwent endoscopic transforaminal foraminoplasty for foraminal stenosis. Results: At minimum 5-year follow-up, excellent results according to the MacNab criteria were obtained in 32 patients (37.2%), Good in 40 (46.5%), fair in 11 (12.8%), and poor in 3 (3.5%), respectively. The mean preoperative VAS was 6.15. The mean postoperative and last follow-up VAS was 3.44. Both postoperative VAS and last follow-up VAS were statistically reduced at a significance level of p<0.0001. Postoperative dysesthesia occurred in 9 patients. Another 9 patients had recurrent disc herniations (10.5%). Failure to cure with persistent pain occurred in 3 patients. Two patients developed pain postoperatively stemming from a different level. One patient experienced a postoperative hematoma which ultimately was inconsequential and did not require any additional surgery. Only 3 patients opted for revision endoscopic discectomy and another 2 for revision fusion surgery. Conclusion: Patients with symptomatic foraminal stenosis may be treated successfully with early transforaminal endoscopic decompression while maintaining favorable long-term outcomes without the need for fusion in the vast majority of patients.

21세기인 지금 우리 세계의 미래가 그리 밝지 않다는 데에 이의를 제기할 자는없다. 인간들이 유발하는 자연재해와 재난들에 관한 연구와 과학적 분석들은 인류의 비관적 미래를 예견하고 있다. 현재 우리세계의 급박한 상황에도 불구하고 이와 같은 세계의 문제들에 대해 어떠한 태도를 견지해야하는지 물음을 던졌던 과학자들과 사상가들은 예부터 있어 왔다. 17세기에서 18세기에 이르는 계몽의 시대동안 두 명의 철학자가 낙관주의라는 개념에 대해 성찰하고 숙고했었다. “이 세계는 최 상의 것이다”라는 철학을 주장하는 라이프니츠는 낙관주의의 아버지로 통하고 있다. 신학과 형이상학의 논리적 틀을 통해 그는 우리가 최상의 가능세계에 살고 있다는 논변을 펼친다. 세상의 모든 존재의 충분한 이유와 더불어 악 역시 우리 세상 의 조화를 위해 필수적이라고 주장한다. 이에 반해 프랑스 철학자 볼테르는 라이프니츠의 낙관론을 전면적으로 비판하며 그 시대상황의 잔혹함과 최상의 가능세계라는 라이프니츠 이론의 부정합성을 주장한다. 그 시대 실제적이고 구체적 상황들에 얽힌 유머와 날카로운 풍자를 통해 볼 테르는 라이프니츠의 사상을 효과적으로 반박한다. 볼테르는 비관론으로 빠지는대신 그 시대의 정신과 관습들을 변화시키고자 하는 의지를 표명한다. 본 논문은이 세계를 바라보는 관점에 관한 라이프니츠와 볼테르 간의 철학적 논박과 긴장관계에 대한 정밀한 분석과 비교와 더불어 그 문제적 시대상황에 관한 철학적 태도가 현재 우리 세계에 관해 가능한 어떠한 답을 제시할 수 있는지에 대해서도 고찰하겠다.

North Korea as a State Sponsor of Terrorism: Views from Tokyo and Pyongyang

This paper examines the interconnections between American, Japanese, and North Korean policies and perspectives, mainly as they have pertained to North Korea’s inclusion on the US State Department’s list of states that support terrorism. In this context, this paper pays especially close attention to the very troubled Japan North Korean relationship. It shows that the recent movement by the Bush administration away from the hard line policy that it maintained for several years, which had been tainted by Cold War politics, has proven effective in improving relations between Washington and Pyongyang. However, relations between Japan and North Korea have remained severely strained by historical problems and animosities, which stem from the Cold War and earlier. This paper concludes by providing practical approaches to bring Japan and North Korea to rapprochement.
