      • Patterns of Fractured Discourse in Chaucer's Nun's Priest's Tale

        An, Sonjae,Anthony 한국중세영문학회 1996 중세영문학 Vol.4 No.-

As a writer of narrative, Chaucer is an obvious master. In his earlier works, and in almost all of the Canterbury Tales, the narration of events runs smoothly, the sections are usually clearly distinguished and articulated. What we find in the Nun's Priest's Tale (NPT) is conspicuously different and oddly difficult to categorize or explain. There is certainly a clear enough structure to the basic story; by it we are brought from an introduction through suspense to crisis and resolution, Yet we find a repeated pattern of narrative breakdown: points where the text halts, does an abrupt about-turn, and sets off in another, often almost opposite direction. This is in addition to the familar oddness of the Tale: accumulation of material not related to the fundamental structure and the difficulty of pinpointing any clear sense to it all at the end. These "breakdowns" may be considered deliberate fractures in the NPT's discourse, stylistic features to this one tale, although reflected elsewhere, part of its challenge to the interpreter intent on locating the strategy they represent. In order to illustrate what is meant by a "fracture", it seems best to start with the most striking and well-known example, the point where Chauntecleer offers to translate Latin into English for his wife.

It has become very easy to buy books from England. Through the WWW one need only go to Blackwell's Bookstore and click on "Tour of the Oxford Bookstore" to be able to select any of the volumes in their stock list(almost 300 in the Middle English Section) and at the end give your Visa number on a secure line. If you ask to have them sent by "Accelerated Surface Mail" you will have them in less than a month for little more than the surface mailing price. The address is http://www.blackwell.co.uk/bookshops/ Similarly, it is very easy to buy books published in America by using the Amazon.com electronic bookstore whose address is http://www.amazon.com and where yon have to use a book search to draw up lists of books if you do not have a clear idea of the titles you want. Amazon.com covers two or three million books, including a vast range of second-hand copies of works out-of-print, they offer many discounts. Finally, readers should note that the Eleventh International Congress of the New Chaucer Society will be held in Paris, July 17 - 20, 1998. Proposals for papers should reach the organizers of each Session by 1 July, 1997. A full list Of the planned sessions is to be found in the Spring,1997 issue of The Chaucer Newsletter, There is a related web site : http://www.cohums.ohio-state,edu/chaucer that may be helpful.

      • Radical Fashion and Radical Fashion Innovation

Dan Zhang,C,Anthony Di Benedetto 한국마케팅과학회 2010 Journal of Global Fashion Marketing Vol.1 No.4

This is a study of the related concepts of radical fashion and radical fashion innovation. Radical fashions are defined here as those that may never enter the market at all, and exist primarily on runway shows, in exhibitions and in publicityby contrast, radical fashion innovations may be very successful in the marketplace. Radical fashions represent a clear break from the old designs, as opposed to incremental fashions, which are defined as an extension or evolution of the old designs. Using this definition, radical fashion seems to be at odds with the definition of marketable fashion. Nevertheless, while most radical fashions do not enter the market at all and live only in runway shows, exhibitions, and museums, there are many examples of radical fashion innovations successful in the market. Accordingly, a series of questions rise: What is radical fashion? What is radical fashion innovation? What are the differences and similarities between these, and how are they connected? This study seeks to address these questions, using a foundation developed in the radical product innovation literature. Fashion innovations may be in terms form or function, or style, and can be radical(involving the breaking down of old ideas) or incremental (involving the evolution of new ideas from old ideas). We draw from the radical product innovation literature to build two related models. The first is a model of radical fashion and radical fashion innovation that illustrates the components of both concepts. The second is a model of radical fashion innovation diffusion, drawn from the general product innovation diffusion literature, which explores the evolution of and the connections between these two concepts from the beginning (i.e., the radical fashion) to the end (i.e., success in the mass market). Radical fashion may result in designs that are more suitable for the runway, catalogues, or even museum display, than for actual wear. Radical fashion has sometimes been called “new ideas before their marketing phase.” Radical fashion may successfully enter the market, however, and gain wide acceptance among consumers. The transition from radical fashion to radi- 1) Ph. D. Notable in this transition process is the fact that, for many product innovations, what drives the first customers to purchase (the “Visionaries,” to use Moore’s terminology in his “crossing the chasm” model of innovation diffusion) may be very different from what drives the rest of the market (the “Pragmatists.”). If this “chasm” or divide between the two market segments is not recognized, the innovating firm may find that their product stalls during the diffusion process and never effectively reaches the mass market. In the case of fashion products, visionaries (such as celebrities and the fashion press) prime the market and create favorable word of mouthyet, at the same time, less-radical, wearable designs may be seen on the runway, or may be manufactured for the mass market and sold through department stores, specialty clothing stores, or even discounters. The most successful worldwide designers instinctively know this, and can continuously produce radically innovative fashion which also usually transitions to the mass market successfully.

Waardenburg Syndrome Type IV De Novo SOX10 Variant Causing Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction

        Anthony R. Hogan,Krishnamurti A. Rao,Willa L. Thorson,Holly L. Neville,Juan E. Sola,Eduardo A. Perez 대한소아소화기영양학회 2019 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.22 No.5

Waardenburg syndrome (WS) type IV is characterized by pigmentary abnormalities, deafness and Hirschsprung's disease. This syndrome can be triggered by dysregulation of the SOX10 gene, which belongs to the SOX (SRY-related high-mobility group-box) family of genes. We discuss the first known case of a SOX10 frameshift mutation variant defined as c.895delC causing WS type IV without Hirschsprung's disease. This female patient of unrelated Kuwaiti parents, who tested negative for cystic fibrosis and Hirschsprung's disease, was born with meconium ileus and malrotation and had multiple surgical complications likely due to chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction. These complications included small intestinal necrosis requiring resection, development of a spontaneous fistula between the duodenum and jejunum after being left in discontinuity, and short gut syndrome. This case and previously reported cases demonstrate that SOX10 gene sequencing is a consideration in WS patients without aganglionosis but with intestinal dysfunction.

Decomposing Interest Differentials: An International Borrowing and Lending Approach

        ( Anthony J. Makin ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 (구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 2004 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.19 No.1

This paper proposes a new economy-wide framework for decomposing international interest differentials based on aggregate borrowing and lending behaviour in economies whose domestic capital markets are highly globally integrated. Using macroeconomic rather than microeconomic concepts, this alternative approach demonstrates how key inter-relationships involving relative inflation levels and exchange rate expectations govern “average” domestic and foreign interest differentials. It also contributes by identifying different kinds of risk premia that arise due to economy-wide factors such as the level of foreign debt and country and political factors. Unlike standard interest parity approaches, based simply on arbitrage of financial asset returns, it shows that changing exchange rate expectations influence international interest differentials through both excess domestic borrowing and foreign lending behaviour.

Computer Vision in Osteoporotic Vertebral Fracture Risk Prediction: A Systematic Review

        Anthony K. Allam,Adrish Anand,Alex R. Flores,Alexander E. Ropper 대한척추신경외과학회 2023 Neurospine Vol.20 No.4

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs) are a significant health concern linked to increased morbidity, mortality, and diminished quality of life. Traditional OVF risk assessment tools like bone mineral density (BMD) only capture a fraction of the risk profile. Artificial intelligence, specifically computer vision, has revolutionized other fields of medicine through analysis of videos, histopathology slides and radiological scans. In this review, we provide an overview of computer vision algorithms and current computer vision models used in predicting OVF risk. We highlight the clinical applications, future directions and limitations of computer vision in OVF risk prediction.

The Molecular Weight of Hyaluronan in Parotid and Mixed Human Saliva

Anthony Pogrel, M.,Low, Mari Anne,Stern, Robert,Schmidt, Brian L. Korean Academy of Oral Biology and the UCLA Dental 2000 International Journal of Oral Biology Vol.25 No.1

To determine the molecular weight of Hyaluronan〔hyaluronic acid〕i stimulated and unstimulated pure parotid saliva and in mixed whole saliva from the floor of the mouth. Ten volunteers where utilized for this study. Pure stimulated and unstimulated parotid saliva was obtained by cannulation of the parotid duct and mixed saliva was obtained from the floor of the mouth by aspiration. Molecular weight determination was carried out by separation on a Superose 6 column. The molecular weight of the hyaluronan in pure parotid saliva was of prdominantly high molecular weight〔>200,000Kd〕. The hyaluronan present in the mucosal saliva of the floor of the mouth had a molecular weight predominantly in the range of 20,000 to 200,000 Kd, with only 3 percent above 200,000 Kd. The precise role of hyaluronan in saliva is unknown. It may aid in the lubricating properties of saliva, it may aid in intraoral wound healing, and may act as a carrier for growth factors which are present in saliva and may hav important physiological functions. It is assumed that the lower molecular weight found in mixed saliva as against pure saliva is due to cleavage and breakdown of the hyaluronan due to bacterial action in the mouth. This bacterial action may affect the ability of the hyaluronan to transport growth factors in the oral cavity. The molecular weight of hyaluronan in mixed saliva is lower than in whole saliva. The significance of this is unknown buy may be detrimental to growth factor transport.
