Pyrene-Tagged Ionic Liquids: Separable Organic Catalysts for S<sub>N</sub>2 Fluorination

<P>We prepared pyrene-substituted imidazolium-based ionic liquids (PILs) as organic catalysts for the S(N)2 fluorination using alkali metal fluoride (MF). In this system, the PIL significantly enhanced the reactivity of MF due to the phase transfer catalytic effect of the imidazolium moiety as well as the metal cation-pi (pyrene) interactions. Furthermore, this homogeneous catalyst PIL was easily separated from the reaction mixture using reduced graphene oxide by it pi-pi stacking with the pyrene of PIL.</P>

A novel mixed matrix membrane (MMM) is devleoped by incorporating pyrene-tagged ionic liquid-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (PTIL-rGO) into a polymer matrix. The as-prepared MMMs can separate CO<sub>2</sub> efficiently due to the simultaneous enhancement of diffusivity selectivity, solubility selectivity, and reacivity selectivity. The highaspect ratio rGO in a polymer matrix is expected increase the length of the tortuous path of gas diffusion and generate a rigidified interface between the polymer matrix and fillers, enhancing the diffusivity selectivity, combined with excellent affinity for CO<sub>2</sub> to enhance the solubility selectivity and reactivity selectivity of the ionic liquids.

An efficient reduced graphene oxide-supported heterogenized palladium complex with pyrene-tagged ketoiminato ligand has been developed and used for cross-coupling of less reactive heteroaryl halides in water. Desirable catalytic activity was observed with high (up to 98%) conversion of the less reactive reactants under relatively mild conditions. The efficiency and green nature of the catalyst were confirmed without significant loss of activity.
Pyrene-Tagged Alcoholic Ionic Liquids as Phase Transfer Catalysts for Nucleophilic Fluorination

Functional group?activity relationships of pyrene-tagged ionic liquid (PTIL)-based organocatalysts for nucleophilic fluorination using alkali metal fluorides (MFs) are described, which demonstrate that the pyrene, oligoether and alcohol moieties on the imidazolium ring are vital for efficient catalysis. Further investigation of these findings led to the discovery of new strategy, which showed superior catalyst separation process, i.e., catalyst is effortlessly separated from the reaction mixture using reduced graphene oxide. The catalytic efficiency of the PTIL as a phase transfer catalyst was demonstrated by the high conversion of the reactants up to 98% fluorinated yield using MFs in CH3CN or t-amyl alcohol. Importantly, the catalyst not only enhanced the reactivity of bimolecular nucleophilic substitutions (SN2) within a short reaction time and reduces the formation of by-products but also affords high yield with easy isolation and separation under mild conditions.

Rapd Analysis of Trichoderma Isolates for Superior Selection for Biopesticide Preparation

Thirty five isolates of Trichoderma species collected from seven different locations of Bangladesh were studied for morphological characters and molecular variation. Mycelial diameters of the isolates varied from 8.28 cm to 9.00 cm. Based on colony colour, isolates were grouped into five such as dark green, green, light green, yellowish green and whitish green. Maximum isolates were green and light green. On the basis of growth habit and colony consistency, the isolates were categorized into three groups, in which most species had fast growth and were compact in appearance. PCR-based Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique employing 3 decamer primers produced 36 scorable bands of which all (100%) were polymorphic. The co-efficient of gene differentiation (Gst) was 1.0000 reflecting the existence of high level of genetic diversity among the isolates. The Unweighted Pair Group Method of Arithmetic Means (UPGMA) dendrogram constructed from Nei's (1972) genetic distance produced 2 main clusters (13 isolates in cluster 1 and 22 isolates in cluster 2). The result indicating their genetic diversity has opened new possibility of using the most efficient and more isolates of Trichoderma in the preparation of biopesticide and decomposition of municipality waste.
Exploring Core Competencies of Sustainable Industry

Ready-made Garments (RMGs) industry is one of the Bangladesh’s success stories. Like many developing countries as South Korea has experienced in the sixties, Bangladesh was encouraged since the late seventies into the garments industry. The RMGs in Bangladesh is characterised by small and medium sized privately owned enterprise. The industry has attained phenomenal growth over the past three decades as the sector has been earning millions of dollars by exporting garments. In the context of export oriented industry, the garment industry has expanded very fast under the global competitions especially with China, and in spite of the termination of quota to export to the US since the Jan. 2005. Therefore, the present study is initiated exploring core competencies of ready-made garments in Bangladesh for its sustainable growth of RMG industry. Data were collected through a seven-point Likert type summated rating scales of questionnaire from strongly disagree (-3) to strongly agree (+3) were adopted to explore the competencies. Sophisticated statistical model as exploratory factor analysis (EFA) has been used. The study has identified three core competencies of sustainable industry as the results, which are determined in RMGs manufacturers in Bangladesh. The dominant competencies are demand for work contract, opportunity seeking and risk taking.
