This paper examined the interaction between flow and spray in a D.I. diesel engine under constant volume spray chamber. At first, experiments were conducted in a 4-valve engine cylinder to obtain the swirl ratio which effects to diesel spray and combustion phenomena. Through this steady state flow test, the swirl ratio can be controlled in the range from 2.2 to 4 by intake control system [ICS]. And using the 2-D LDV system in-cylinder swirl flow patterns was observed for the four cases of the swirl ratio. Besides the injection pressure and needle lift were analyzed to know the fuel injection characteristics for the rotary type injection pump. And spray atomization processes were quantified using PDA technique.
Many researchers have developed the measurement technique of in-cylinder flow. Recently. there are lots of studies on steady flow with different SCV geometries. In this study the flow characteristics of four-valve cylinder head were examined in a steady test rig for different SCV open ratios. Each swirl ratio of several SCV angle was quantified by swirl impulse meter and 2D-LDV measurement. The results showed that the swirl ratio was controlled between 2.3 and 3.8 based on SCV angles. The velocity distributions of in-cylinder flow field were measured by 2-D LDV test and visualized swirl and tumble flow pattern at different positions. In this engine, we found out that the swirl was dominant flow.
It has been demonstrated that the in-cylinder turbulence is enhanced by inclined swirl with a SCV(Swirl Control Valve). This paper examined the interaction between swirl and tumble flows using the variable SCV's and analyzed the technical difficulties of finding exact measuring position to better understand flow characteristics. Experiments were conducted in a 4-valve optically accessed transparent research engine using a backward-scatter LDV mode under motoring condition at 1000rpm. In this paper the inclined-tumble flow structure along the principal measuring sections were analyzed to know the flow motion phenomena by obtaining angular momentum and turbulence intensity then the adapted technical method of the LDV measurement was proven more efficient.
It has been demonstrated that the in-cylinder turbulence is enhanced by inclined swirl with a SCV(swirl control valve). The inclined-tumble flow measurement and analysis were performed for various types of intake systems that generated several different combinations of swirl ratio and tumble ratio in the cylinder. Experiments were conducted in a 4-valve optically accessed transparent research engine using a backward-scatter LDV mode under motoring condition at l,000rpm. The influence of swirl/tumble levels on the characteristics of turbulence was analysed. This study presents experimental results of the inclined-tumble flow structure, including the flow motion phenomena, angular momentum and turbulence intensity.
The inclined-tumble flow measurement and analysis were performed for various types of intake systems that generated several different combinations of swirl ratio and tumble ratio in the cylinder. The in-cylinder motion is varied by means of flow control unit located between the intake manifold and the cylinder head. This study was conducted on an optically accessed transparent single cylinder research engine. The swirl/tumble ratio and angular speed of the tumble and swirl vortices, occuring inside the cylinder, are determined from a conventional steady flow rig and Laser Doppler Velocimetry under motoring conditions (at 1000rpm). The influence of swirl/tumble levels on the characteristics of turbulence was analysed. This study presents experimental results of the inclined-tumble flow structure, including the flow motion phenomena, swirl center rotation, angular momentum and turbulence intensity.
