Fiber Properties of Needle-punched Nonwoven Fabrics on Air Filter Applications

Various fiber types consisting of a single nonwoven fabric were investigated to provide a combination of good strength and filtration characteristics. Polyester staple fiber (PSF) 3, 6, and 15 denier, low melting PSF (LM-PSF) 4 denier, 3-ball-type, non-circular shaped, PSF 2 denier (NC-PSF), and splittable micro-PSF 2 denier (SM-PSF) that were divided into 8 pieces by needle punching force were used for investigation. The effects of the enormous increase in the surface area and the reduction in pore size due to the use of finer fibers are reported. As the fiber denier size was reduced, the dust arresting efficiency increased and the air permeability decreased. The dust arresting efficiency also increased with increasing SM-PSF content.

It is important for automobile manufacturers to eliminate unwanted noise in passenger compartments of vehicles. One of the methods free from noise is to use sound absorbing materials such as floor coverings, package trays, door panels and luggage compartments in auto interiors. In this study, the needle punched nonwovens were produced with the various blending ration of Non-circular shaped polyester, 2 denier and splittable micro-fiber, 2 denier. The sound absorption characteristic of nonwovens and corresponding mechanical properties are explored.

3-dimensional nonwoven fabrics show high loft performance owing to their dominant fiber orientation in the thickness direction. A high loft performance is a fundamental requirement for applications to cushion materials and pre-filters etc. In this study, the process was optimized to obtain 3-dimensional nonwoven fabrics with improved physical properties. The process conditions, such as the distance between the air ejection nozzles, compressed air pressure and web sustaining mesh size, were examined to develop a fiber orientation in the thickness direction of nonwoven fabrics. The mechanical properties and fiber orientation distribution function (ODF) were compared.

Recently, most of the steering system applied to vehicle is the EPS system using a motor. EPS can make the driver comfort and safe by providing proper steering performance on various driving condition. As the role and function of the EPS rises, the necessity of the EPS optimization design will be considered as an important task to increase the vehicle performance and customer satisfaction. But there are many EPS system during development due to mismatch among sub-systems and it causes extra resources such as cost and time. So steering system requires systematic design strategy and also to meet the requirement of functional safety(ISO 26262). Firstly, we analyzed issue histories such as vibration and noise by using DFMEA, then derived factors which influence on EPS system. The scope for each factors was determined by the tuning parameter of the EPS Module, Operation logic, and Performance calibration which are sub-system of EPS. The selected factors were derived by DFSS and were able to come up with a Robust Design for the EPS system by optimizing the main factor.
