        Immediate Effect of Elastic Taping on Postural Sway in Patients with Stroke

        Stroke can cause leg weakness, sensory abnormalities, and balance disorders. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of elastic taping on postural sway in patients with stroke. This study randomly applied elastic taping to 20 patients with stroke in two ways. The center of pressure (COP) distribution was measured before and after the elastic taping. The measurement variables were COP area and length, and measurements were performed immediately after taping. The elastic taping on tibialis anterior muscle showed a significant decrease in COP area and length compared to that without elastic taping. The elastic taping on gastrocnemius muscles showed a significant decrease in COP area and length compared to that without elastic taping. There was no significant difference in COP area and length between the elastic taping on tibialis anterior muscle and gastrocnemius muscles. Our results suggested that applying elastic taping on the ankle joints is effective in decreasing postural sway after in patients with stroke.

        Immediate Effects of Frequency-dependent Electrotherapy on the Gait and Ankle Range of Motion of Chronic Stroke Patients

        Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and interferential current therapy were applied to the plantar flexor of the stroke patients, and the immediately effects on gait and ankle ROM were investigated. TENS group (n=15) and ICT group (n=15) were applied to the paretic side plantar flexor, respectively. After 60 minutes of application, evaluation of the gait and passive ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM) using smartphone. After 60 minutes of application, immediate post evaluation was carried out. Two electrotherapy methods showed a significant increase in gait speed, cadence, and ankle ROM. Two electrotherapy methods were intervention methods that could increase the gait and ankle ROM of stroke patients. More subjects will be needed to pinpoint differences between the two electrotherapy methods.

        Effect of Inspiratory Muscle Training Combined with Trunk Stabilization Exercise on Inspiratory Muscle Activity and Pulmonary Function

        Background: Inspiratory muscle training can improve inspiratory strength and endurance through threshold loading. In addition, trunk stabilization exercises can improve trunk strength and respiratory function. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of application of inspiratory muscle training and trunk stabilization exercise on pulmonary function and inspiratory muscle activation in college students. Design: Randomized controlled trials. Methods: In this study, 24 college students were randomly divided into two groups: inspiratory muscle training and trunk stabilization exercise (experimental group, n=12), and trunk stabilization exercise (control group, n=12). Inspiratory muscle activity was measured using a surface electromyography. Pulmonary function was measured using a spirometer and a peak expiratory flow meter. Results: In the experimental group, the muscle activity of both upper trapezius and latissimus dorsi muscles increased significantly after the intervention. In the experimental group, both upper trapezius muscle activity was significantly increased than in the control group. In the experimental group, all the pulmonary function significantly increased after the intervention. Conclusion: In this study, when the inspiratory muscle training was additionally applied to the trunk stabilization exercise in college students in their twenty, it was possible to improve the inspiratory muscle activity and pulmonary function.

        Effect of kinesio taping on ankle strength, movement and function in patients with common peroneal nerve paralysis

        The effect of kinesio taping in patients with common peroneal nerve paralysis (PNP) have not been investigated. This purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of kinesio taping on patients with common PNP. Ten subjects who had common PNP were included in this study. Kinesio taping was applied to the ankle joint (direction of dorsiflexion and eversion). The measurements were by manual muscle test (MMT; tibialis anterior, peroneus longus), active ROM (ankle dorsiflexion, eversion), pain (visual analogue scale (VAS), pressure pain threshold (PPT)), and balance (one leg standing). Subjects were assessed at baseline and 8 weeks of intervention. In the results, all subjects showed improvements in MMT, active ROM, Pain and balance at the 8-week. These findings are considered to be effective in applying kinesio taping on ankle joint in common PNP patients.

        The Effect of Wearing a Soft Knee Brace and Balance Training on Paretic Side Foot Pressure and Knee Joint Muscle Strength in Stroke Patients

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of wearing a soft knee brace during balance training on paretic side foot pressure and knee joint muscle strength in stroke patients. The recruited 20 stroke patients were randomized into 10 experimental group and 10 control group. All subjects were subjected to balance training, and only the experimental group was trained in balance while wearing a soft knee brace. Experimental group and the control group before and after the intervention showed significant increases in foot pressure and knee joint muscle strength on the paralyzed side (p<0.05), experimental group showed a significant increase in foot pressure and knee joint muscle strength compared to the control group (p<0.05). This study confirmed that wearing a soft knee brace had a positive effect on paretic side foot pressure and knee joint muscle strength in stroke patients.

        유방암 절제술 환자의 관절가동술과 전기자극을 융합한 중재가 어깨 가쪽돌림과 통증에 미치는 영향

        본 연구는 관절가동술 후 두 가지 유형의 전기치료 방법을 각각 적용하였을 때 유방암 환자의 어깨 가쪽돌림 가동범위와 통증에 미치는 효과를 알아보기 위해 실시하였다. 유방절제술을 시행한 유방암 환자 30명을 STMG (관절가동술+비침습적 무통증 신호 전기치료) 15명과 TENMG (관절가동술+경피신경전기자극) 15명으로 나누었다. 중재는 4주간 주 3회, 1회당 1시간씩 실시하였다. 측정은 어깨 가쪽 돌림 관절가동범위(Range of motion, ROM), 통증(Visual analog scale)을 측정하였다. 중재 전·후 두 군 모두 어깨 가쪽돌림 관절가동범위, 통증에서 유의한 차이가 있었다(p<.05). STMG는 어깨 가쪽 돌림 관절가동범위를 제외하고 TENMG보다 통증 감소에서 더욱 효과적이었다(p<.05). 유방암 절제술 환자의 통증을 경감시키기 위해서는 STMG이 TENMG보다 더욱 효과가 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 다양한 차이를 확인하기 위해 대조군을 더하고, 더 많은 대상자가 필요할 것으로 사료된다

        경피신경전기자극과 호흡근 저항운동 동시 적용이 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 호흡근 근긴장도와 폐 기능에 미치는 영향

        PURPOSE: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the resistance respiratory muscle exercise with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on the respiratory muscle tone and pulmonary function of stroke patients. METHODS: Twenty stroke patients were divided into the TENS group (n = 7), placebo TENS group (n = 7), and control group (n = 6), and each intervention was performed on the three groups 5 times a week for 4 weeks. The assessment was carried out by measuring changes in the muscle tone of the latissimus dorsi and abdominal external obliques, and pulmonary function. RESULTS: In this study, the TENS group and the placebo TENS group had significant increases in the paretic side latissimus dorsi muscle tone, forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and peak expiratory flow (PEF). There was no significant difference in changes in respiratory muscle tone between the three groups. The pulmonary function was significantly different between the three groups, and it was observed from the results of the post-hoc test that FVC showed a significant increase in the TENS group and the placebo TENS group compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: Through this study, it was found that the respiratory muscle resistance exercise was more effective as a method to increase respiratory muscle tone and pulmonary function in stroke patients than combined transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

        Effects of Wearing a Weight-Bearing Jacket versus Increasing Speed during Treadmill Gait Training on Gait Parameters in Stroke Patients

        Background: A weight-bearing jacket during treadmill gait training is being used for rehabilitation in stroke patients. However, the effect on various gait parameters has not been confirmed. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the comparison of exercise intensity through speed increase and weight-bearing jacket during treadmill gait training to restore gait ability in stroke patients. Design: Randomized controlled trials. Methods: This study recruited 24 stroke patients. The subjects were randomly assigned to the experimental group (wearing a weight-bearing jacket during treadmill gait training, n=12) and the control group (speed increase during treadmill gait training, n=12). Gait measurement device (G-walk) was used to measure the gait parameters of the subjects. Results: Both the experimental group and control group showed a significant increase in cadence, gait speed, stride length, and gait symmetry index post intervention (P<.05). In comparison between the two groups, the experimental group showed a significant increase in the gait symmetry index post the intervention than the control group (P<.05). Conclusion: Through this study, it was found that wearing a weight-bearing jacket was a more effective method for improving the gait symmetry index than increasing speed during treadmill gait training in stroke patients.

        복부압박벨트가 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 균형 및 보행에 즉각적으로 미치는 융복합적 영향

        본 연구는 복부압박벨트가 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 안정성한계와 보행 변수에 즉각적인 효과를 알아보기 위해 실시 하였다. 뇌졸중 환자 30명을 모집하여 복부압박벨트 착용 전과 복부압박벨트 착용 후 변화를 확인하였다. 측정은 균형 변수인 안정성한계(limited of stability), 시공간적 보행 변수(spatiotemporal gait parameter)를 측정하였다. 복부 압박벨트 착용 후 마비측, 비마비측, 전방, 후방 이동면적이 유의하게 증가하였고(p <.05), 시간적 보행 변수인 분속수 (cadence), 보행속도(gait velocity), 공간적 보행변수인 보폭(stride length)이 유의하게 증가하였다(p <.05). 본 연구 를 통해 복부압박벨트 착용은 뇌졸중 환자에게 균형과 보행 기능 개선에 즉각적인 효과가 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 향후 연구에서는 뇌졸중 환자의 균형과 보행 기능 개선에 효율적인 복부압박 수준과 중재기간에 대한 연구가 필요하다. This study was conducted to investigate the immediate effects of abdominal pressure blet on limited of stability and gait parameter in patients after stroke. Thirty stroke patients were recruited to measured pre and post wearing the abdominal pressure belt. The assessment measured limited of stability and spatiotemporal gait parameter. This study result were significantly increase in paretic side area, non-paretic side area, forward side area, backward side area (p <.05) and cadence, gait velocity, stride length (p <.05). This study found that abdominal pressure belt had an immediate effect on improving balance and gait function in stroke patients. Future studies require studies of efficient abdominal pressure levels and intervention periods to improve the balance and walking function of stroke patient.
