The purpose of this study was to analyze the statistical errors of articles in the Journal of Korean Academy of Periodontology from 1973 to 1999. Of the 662 articles examined, 263 were included which analyzed the data. They were classified into 2 groups with time lapse; group 1: 1973∼1989, group 2: 1990∼1999. Authors made checklists for analyzing the data and detecting the errors and analyzed them with professional statistician. The results were as follows: 1. Of 263 atricles which applied statistical method, 40(19.3%) was in group 1, 223(49.0%) in group2. 2. In the number of statistical method applied, 170(64.6%) were analyzed with 1 statistical method, 73(27.8%) with 2 methods, 18(6.8%) with 3 methods, and 2(0.8%) with 4 methods 3. The number of statistical methods applied was 14, and they were applied in order of 119 of ANOVA, 72 of Student t-test, 63 of Paired t-test, 36 of CORRELATION, and 21 of Mann- Whitney U test. 4. In 87(33.1%) of 263 articles and in 18 error items, statistical errors were found out. In group I, 9 items (55%) of error were found out, and were in order of 5 of Student t-test instead of Paired t-test, and 4 of unnecessary statistical analysis. In group II, 16 items (29.1%) of error were found out, and were in order of 22 of Student t-test instead of Paired t-test, 7 of no multiple comparison test after ANOVA, 6 of Student t-test instead of ANOVA, 6 of unnecessary statistical analysis, and 5 of ANOVA instead of Paired t-test. In conclusion, the results noted that statistical analyses were increased, but statistical errors were decreased with time. But authors suggest that researchers should refer to standard statistical texts and seek advice from professional statisticians to avoid the statistical errors.
인간의 치은조직내 CuZn-SOD 와 Mn-SOD 에 관한 연구

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the presence of the scavenging enzyme, superoxide dismutase(SOD) in the human gingival tissue, in addition to the activity of SOㅇ according to age. For this study, a total of 29 patients ranged in age from 20 to 62 years(6 thirties, 7 forties, 12 fifties, and 4 sixties). Gingival tissues were surgically obtained during the periodontal surgery and extraction. The activity of CuZn-SOD and Mn-SOD in the healthy gingival tissues was measured by using UV-spectrophotometer by the same as Crapo et al did. To determine the degree of severity of ginaival inflammation, gingival tissues were stained by hematxylin-eosin stain, and author used leukocyte common antigen for white blood cells, CD3 for T lymphocytes, CD20 for B lymphocytes, CuZn-SOD and Mn-SOD as primary antibody for immunohistolocalization. The results were as follows: 1. There was a slight decreased tendency in Mn-SOD activity only with age. 2. The infiltrated inflammatory cells in excised gingival tissues were primarily CD3-positive T lymphocytes. 3. Immunohistochemistry showed 5∼50% of CuZn-SOD was positive in periphery of matrix collagen fibers in inflamed gingival tissues. 4. Immunohistochemistry showed Mn-SOD was positive less than 5% or negative in periphery of matrix collagen fibers in inflamed gingival tissues. The above results, within the limited experiment, demonstrated that decreased activity of Mn-SOD was related to agin, and the activity of CuZn-SOD increased according to the severity of gingival inflammation, in CD3+ T lymphocyte lesion.
당뇨환자 혈청내 Matrix metalloproteinase-3 활성도에 관한 연구

Diabetic mellitus(D.M.) is a systemic disease commonly associated with periodontal disease. The generalized periodontal changes of D.M. are abscess formation, enlarged gingiva, loss of attachment, increased tooth mobility and loosened tooth. The loss of connective tissue attachment and bone matrix resorption in periodontal disease is mediated by matrix metalloproteinase(MMP) released by cells such as kerationocytes. fibroblasts, endothelia cells, macrophages, tumor cells and neutrophils. Increased MMP-3 activity has been recognised to be strongly associated wit hinflammatory periodontal disease. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate pathogenesis of periodonatal tissue destruction in D.M. patients through examining the activity of MMP-3 in serum. Twenty-five adults were classified into four groups : healthy control group( n=8, 23-47 years, mean age : 29.6 years ), non-periodontitis D.M. group( n=7, 35-62 years, mean age : 45.7 years ), periodontitis group( 4=4, 23-57 years, mean age : 41 years ) and periodontitis-affected D.M. group( n=6, 42-71 years, mean age : 55.5 years ). Gingival index, diabetic duration and fasting blood sugar(FBS) were examined. The activity of MMP-3 in blood serum was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using proMMP-3 ELISA kit(The Binding site, San Diego, CA). The activity of MMP-3 was recorded by optical density measured by microwell plate reader(Bid-Tek instrument, U.S.A., 450㎚). The difference of gingival index and the optical density among groups was statistically analyzed by on way ANOVA. The relationship of diabetic duration and FBS with MMP-3 activity was statistically analyzed by Correlations. The results were as follows : 1. The diabetic duration and FBS were not associated with MMP-3 activity (p>0.05). 2. Periodontitis group was statistically higher than non-periodontitis group(p<0.05). 3. There was no significant difference in the MMP-3 activity between healthy control group and non-periodontitis D.M. group that had similar G.I.(p>0.05). 4. Periodontitis-affected D.M. group showed significantly higher activity, compared with periodontitis group that had similar G.I.(p<0.05). Within the limit of the present study, the above results suggest that periodontal inflammation is associated with increased activity of MMP-3 and periodontal destruction can be occurred more aggressively in periodntitisaffected D.M. than periodontitis alone.
A Case of Delayed Onset Tirofiban Induced Thrombocytopenia in a Chronic Renal Failure Patient

Compared with heparin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa inhibitor induced thrombocytopeniais characterized by a rapid and profound fall in the platelet count. In severe cases, the platelet countdecreases below 20,000/mm3 within the initial 24 hours after exposure to the drugs. It is often associated withsevere bleeding complications. Tirofiban is one of the GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors. A case of severe thrombocytopeniain a 60-year-old man, with chronic renal failure (CRF) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI), was recentlyexperienced. Tirofiban was administered to treat the AMI without ST segment elevation. The platelet count fellto 1,000/mm3 with hemoptysis and petechiae 80 hours after the initiation of tirofiban infusion. In this case, theclinical course was similar to that of the typical GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors induced thrombocytopenia, with the exceptionthat its onset time was unusually delayed. The platelet count was normalized in 9 days after cessation of tirofibaninfusion. Thus, this unusual case is reported as delayed onset tirofiban induced thrombocytopenia in a CRF patient.
가령에 따른 인체 치은조직내 Superoxide Dismutase 와 Catalase의 활성도 변화

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the activities of the antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase(SOD) and catalase in the human gingival tissue according to the aging, the presence or absence of inflammation, and sex. For this study, a total of 36 patients ranged in age from 12 to 66 years(average: 41.9 years, 22 males, 14 females) was involved. Gingival tissues were surgically obtained from marginal gingiva and maxillary tuberosity during periodontal surgery and extraction. Total protein concentration was measured by Bradford method. Western blot was performed for the activity of SOD and catalase in the gingival tissue, and the band density was measured by densitometer.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress pattern in different bone densities surrounding fin-type implant fixtures under the vertical and inclined loads (30) of 200N. Von-Mises stress, the pricipal stress, and the displacement on the implant fixtures under the loads were calculated by using the finite element method. Four different types of bicon implant fixture were used for this study. The geometries of implant fixtures to develop the model were used by a sales brochure and profile project. Three-dimensional finite element model of the mandible was developed with 6.0 mm implant in diameter wurrounded by approximately 2.5 mm of bone. Bone densities were classified according to the elastic modulus of the tree. The finite element program MSC PATRAN (MSC, Software Corp., USA) were used for analysis of stress distribution. The value of the Von-Mises stress, the pricipal stress, and the displacement on the implant fixtures under the vertical and inclined loads were decreased when the diameter of implant fixture was increased, and increased when the elastic modulus was decreased. The stress on implant fixture under the vertical and inclined loads was distributed through the length of implant fixtures in D3 and D4. The distribution of stress was influenced by the direction of loads. In the wide diameter of implants, the stress was developed at outer surface of bone. In conclusion, this study suggest that stress developing on the peri-implant tissues might be influenced by the dimension of implant, elastic modulus of bone, and direction of loads.
