Magnetoelectric (ME) effects for lanthanum modified $BiFeO_3-PbTiO_3\;(BE-_xPT)$ solid solutions have been investigated. The value of magnetoelectric polarization coefficient, up is 10 times greater than that of $Cr_2O_3$. The results also show that up is due to a linear coupling between polarization and magnetization, and that up is independent of do magnetic bias and ac magnetic field. The ME effect is believed to be significantly enhanced due to breaking of the cycloidal spin state of a long-period spiral spin structure, via randomly distributed charged imperfections.

Effects of coiling temperature on the prior structure and subsquent martensitic transformation has been studied in an high strength Fe-l.43%Cr -0.34%C steel. Spheroidization of cementite of the hot-rolled sheet depended upon coiling temperature; a lamellar cementite in larger pearlite colony was observed by raising coiling temperature but a globular cementite was shown by lowering coiling temperature. By austenitizing and then quenching, both coarser martensite and insoluble carbides were revealed in the specimens showing lamellar cememtite but only fine martensite was observed in the specimens showing globular cementite. Comparing Vickers hardness values of the hot-rolled sheets after annealing and then quenching, Vickers hardness value of the sheet annealed at lower temperature was higher than that of the annealed at higher temperature due to prior structure i.e., spheroidization of cementite.

Effect of cryogenic treatment on the microstructural change, retained austenite and precipitation has been studied in a STD 11 type cold-working die steel. The volume fraction of austenite increases but that of M7C3 decreases by increasing austenitizing time. However, the volume fraction of austenite decreases and carbide particles becomes finer and more uniform by cryogenic treatment i.e holding at -196 after austenilizing. The amartensite, which is transformed by austenitizing and then quenching, is coverted to tempered martensite by tempering at 550 and the size of carbides precipitated in tempered martensite becomes finer with increasing cryogenic treatment time.

Hydroxyapatite coatings were fabricated by a room temperature spray method on zirconia substrates and the influence of heat-treatment on their microstructure was also investigated. Phase composition of coated hydroxyapatite films was similar to the starting powder, but the grain size of hydroxyapatite particles was reduced to the size of nano-scale about 100 nm. Grain size, particle compactness, and adhesiveness to zirconia of hydroxyapatite coatings were increased with heat-treatment temperature, but some of cracks by heat-treatment above 1100℃ were initiated between hydroxyapatite coatings and zirconia substrate. Heat-treated hydroxyapatitelayers show the dissolution in SBF solution for 5 days. Hydroxyapatite-coated specimen heat-treated at 1100℃ for 1 h has a good biocompatibility, which specimen induced the nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite precipitateson the coating surface by the immersion in SBF solution for 5 days.
