Reading the Mirror Images in Virginia Woolf’s Between the Acts with Psychoanalytic Feminist Theory

Vol.23 No.2

In Virginia Woolf’s texts, images abound of women seeing themselves reflected in the metaphorical mirror. While reading Between the Acts, I began to ask the meaning of this recurring motif and Woolf’s aesthetic treatment of it. The mirror reflections in Between the Acts, associated with the male gaze, often demonstrate ideas of women’s being. The female characters do so by reifying certain social patterns and positing same-laden social identities such as “a mother of two children,” the “wife of stockbroker,” or “Sir Richard’s daughter.” However, they simultaneously feel intruded on and violated by looking at their own images in the mirror, since they have to become what the male subjects want to see—objects. Moreover, they seem to desperately find the possibility that their selfhood can be interspersed not with the rule of “sameness” in the male-dominated representative system but with the rule of “difference” by imagining what the other side of the mirror might be. In this paper, I explore how Woolf demonstrates the issues of women looking at themselves in the mirror in Between the Acts and the correlation of that conception with their sense of frustration, anxiety, and fear by using various feminist theories such as Luce Irigaray, Elizabeth Grosz, Julia Kristeva and Kaja Silverman, etc. For this, I divide my discussion into three parts: the relationship between the reflection in the looking-glass and the male gaze, the issue of the deficiency of female language, and Luce Irigaray’s and other’s feminist theory and its solution for it.

Exosome and Polymersome for Potential Theranostic Applications

2016 Macromolecular Research Vol.24 No.7

Nano-sized systems have been used extensively for the delivery of various therapeutics, such as pharmaceuticals, proteins, and nucleic acids. Exosomes are small extracellular vesicles secreted from parent cells by fusion of multivesicular late endosomes with the plasma membrane, which act as an intercellular communication mediator and contain bioactive molecules. Thus, exosomes may possess potential as a natural delivery system. Polymersomes are synthetic vesicles composed of external bilayers, typically generated from amphiphilic block copolymers, which resemble many aspects of exosomes and have been utilized widely in many drug delivery applications. In this review, general properties of exosomes and polymersomes and their recent applications in the drug delivery areas and potential in theranostic approaches are discussed.

Achromatic and Athermal Design of an Optical System with Corrected Petzval Curvature on a Three-dimensional Glass Chart

2017 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.1 No.4

We present a graphical method for determining a pair of optical materials and powers to design anachromatic and athermal lens system with corrected Petzval curvature. To graphically obtain the solutions,a three-dimensional (3D) glass chart is proposed. Even if a particular material combination is unavailable,we can select an element suitable for a specific lens and continuously change the element powers of anequivalent single lens for aberrations correction. Thus, we can iteratively identify the materials and powerson a 3D glass chart. By designing a fisheye lens using this method, an achromatic and athermal systemwith flat Petzval curvature is obtained, over the specified waveband and temperature ranges.

Vol.65 No.1

The main purpose of this paper is to apply Theodor W. Adorno’s non-identity thinking and negative dialectic to the major themes of J. M. Coetzee’s Elizabeth Costello. Elizabeth Costello is a dying female writer who travels around the worlds and gives lectures in the novel. Among many other issues, she accuses the deceitfulness of human subjectivity and its violence against animal others by the name of the Reason. Another question this paper examines is Coetzee-Costello’s writing ethics and how it can be used as a strategic tool or a distorting apparatus reflecting reality. This paper approaches Coetzee-Costello’s writing ethics and their rhetorical strategy through Adorno’s commitment to the formative nature of writing. Moreover, Coetzee’s critique of any kind of essentialism and attempt at illuminating different kinds of values, more immanent to the objects, are well demonstrated in Costello’s effort to embrace the (im)possibility of hearing the voices of the others. This paper, focusing on the commonality between Adorno and Coetzee-Costello writer, argues that their bleak and indifferent narrative style—that often uses the inter-contradictions to criticize the work itself—reveals the very limit of representation and proceeds toward the recognition of unknowability of others.

“Something taking shape / Something that has a new name”: Redefinition of Sexual Difference as a Transformative Power in Mina Loy’s and H. D.’s Modernist Poems

Vol.69 No.1

This paper explores how and Mina Loy’s and H. D.’s rhetorical experiments, which are analogous to the features of their feminine syntax, consequently revise the dominant social grammar in which woman is not defined as a ‘speaking’ and ‘desiring’ subject. Many avant-garde women poets from the 1910s through 1950s lived in the modernist society where male voices were often deemed universal and this mono-gendered literary world allowed no language to secure Loy’s and H. D.’s voices and experiences as women. Loy and H. D. shared the acute sense of loss and split derived from the fellow modernists’ ontological presumption on women and felt the consequent deprivation of language under the patriarchal gaze. In order to resuscitate the unnameable female experiences and inscribe “[s]omething taking shape / Something that has a new name” in their poetic languages, H. D. epitomizes her characters’ multiple and transforming identities by superimposing the variant myths in such a way that there can no longer be any question of which represents the original female image and experience. Loy also attempts to represent the abjected, anomalous, and marginalized female body and its experiences through such images of grotesque and visceral bodily fluids and orifices. This paper investigates how these modernist poets rearticulated what are the ways of living that count as femaleness and what qualifies as a female body in the early twentieth century, while at the same time keeping such ideas and terms at a cautious distance from the symbolic and its orderly proceedings.

Vol.32 No.-

Recently, high interest in blended learning adoption in enterprise education. Blended Learning is that students have the advantage of being less temporal and spatial constraints it to the mouth, using a variety of techniques can be utilized technology, these advantages will have had 가a positive effect on corporate training. Company S living being operated by an established educational organization dedicated training centers in order to strengthen the capacity of partners collaboration. There was a problem that appears while conducting supplier training, First, in case of small business enterprise, such as business partners is staff size is small business alternative manpower shortage and long-term education attended the will is difficult, Second, the goods and technology to produce each partner to various mouth and it is difficult to equalize the level of the students. Third, that it is realistically possible need for hands-on practical application in a production partner training. If letting to its employees, not partners training, but it could easily solve the above problem, in the case of a partner destination education because they can not sensibly and enforced company S in a strategy in the form giving practical assistance to partners to increase the quality of education to be established. Therefore, this study was carried out under the assumption that if you can solve conducted by introducing the Blended Learning. This study try applying a Blended Learning in corporate training, go through the task of verification for the positive effects of Blended Learning was demonstrated the possibility and the effect again, through measurable action on Blended Learning case studies in the future, partner training It plans to expand research.

In the Heart of the Country를 중심으로

Vol.12 No.3

This paper explores the issue of un/speakability of ghosts in postcolonial gothic novels, focusing on two female protagonists, Antoinette in Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea and Magda in J. M. Coetzee’s In the Heart of the Country. Following the theoretical leads of Gayatri Spivak, Homi Bhabha and Chandra Mohanty, this paper reads both Rhys’ and Coetzee’s works as postcolonial Gothic genre in which Antoinette and Magda attempt to enunciate and represent themselves from the position of absence in the dominant field of knowledge. Antoinette suffers from her unstable identity or culturally hybridized social status and is often regarded as an outsider, being rebuffed both within her birthplace and in England. Magda is also an isolated woman on her Boer farmer father’s farm in colonial and patriarchal South Africa. Magda’s marginalized voice, however, continuously seeks for the intimate personal and communal reciprocity from which she can regain her strength and active voice. However, their voices and willingness to represent themselves eventually failedto revolt against the patriarchal and colonial society. This paper further questions who and what made these female characters silent and how we should approach the issues. To answer these questions, I problematize the oppressive ideological mechanisms in the representative realm that often frustrates the victimized women’s attempts to speak out.

Vol.59 No.3

This paper explores Giorgio Agamben’s concepts of two different forms of life—“bare life” defined in Homo Sacer and “happy life” in Coming Community—discussing their relationship with Michael K’s identity in J. M. Coetzee’s Life & Times of Michael K. Michael’s solitary yet sufficient life as a gardener offers us a more extended way of understanding Agamben’s notions of “happy life,” or “form-of-life.” Throughout the novel, Michael undergoes a significant transformation. At the beginning, his life in many ways resembles Agamben’s concept of “bare life,” but soon new form of life begins to emerge in his deserted condition of life. In other words, Coetzee later in the novel shows us a touch of hope and political futurity through Michael’s passive-active resistance against the government’s identity politics. However, Agamben’s “pure potentials” should not be confused with moralistic values such as will power, faith, and determination. Rather, it is achieved when one’s state of abandonment is pushed to the extreme beyond any light of humanistic values. Both Coetzee in Life & Times of Michael K and Agamben in his theories well demonstrate what it means to live as a “bare life” and what mode of being inaugurates the true “form-of-life” in today’s global biopolitical system.

Vol.42 No.2

By incorporating computational methods into reading English literary texts, this study applied Franco Moretti’s reading frame, “Distant Reading” to the qualitative analysis of English novels. Through the combined quantitative and qualitative research, this research explores how the modern concept of nation-state have undergone significant changes from 1660 to 1918 in Western Europe. The development of modern nation-state in Western Europe from late Eighteenth century to Nineteenth century has been regarded as an ideological process in which the cultural boundaries of nations match up with their political boundaries. Especially, towards the Nineteenth century, this process has gradually removed them from the old monarchical structures and allowed much larger numbers of political subjects to retain higher level of loyalty of citizenry. To test this hypothesis, we worked on the frequency of geographical names of locations appeared in the Eighteenth and Ninteenth century literary texts from “Project Gutenberg” and measured a wide spectrum of emotional attitudes attached to those locations.
