대한제국기 도한(屠漢)(백정(白丁))의 호구(戶口) 양상과 사회,경제적 처지

During the period of Daehanjeguk, Dohan Hojeok(屠漢戶籍) for only Dohan was separately prepared. Now, there remains Dohan Hojeok that were prepared by Ulsan-gun, Boseong-gun and Chuncheon-gun. Married women were entered into the Dohan Hojeok as ‘Moseong(某姓)’ The fact means that their discrimination in social status existed customarily even during the period of Daehanjeguk. While only the family members in a direct line were registered and seen in Dohan Hojeok, moreover, other family members were not seen in them. This fact also indicates that these Dohan outcast groups began to be adapted to the Confucian society which put more emphasis on their direct-lined family members than other family members. With Gabo(甲午) reform of 1894, Baekjeong(白丁) were officially allowed to be treated as common people and wear a traditional cylindrical Korean hat. Nevertheless, their suffering from contemptuous treatment continued so that they could not wear a traditional hat. Only the cowhide was often allowed for their hat string for the purpose of discrimination against them. During the period, `Dohan` in the space for their occupations of Dohan Hojeok indicated the butcher, and was occupationally considered the most polluted and degrading. Because the Baekjeong people could not have more opportunities to have means of support to depend upon, they were forced to become the illegal butcher. The fact implies their severe difficulties in supporting their dependents. They were also exploited by local officers, governors or top official classes called Yangban(兩班), and there was a continuous increase in the butcher taxation so that their financial conditions became very difficult.
