Background ; Tuberculosis (TB) is a prevalent infectious disease in Korea. It was observed that the epidemic of tuberculosis occurs sporadically. To implement effective TB control policy in the army, it is needed to understand population's knowledge and attitude on TB. Knowledge of Korean military personnel was not investigated, so far. Methods ; We surveyed 1,000 military personnel who were recruited from contacts of TB patients in barracks from 2012 to 2013 with structure questionnaire. The questionnaire was focused on the knowledge of TB, latent TB infection (LTBI) and contact investigation. Results ; 58.9% of subjects responded the correct answer (air-borne disease). 38.3% of respondents expected that 30% of LTBI carrier could be TB patients in their lifetime. It was found that close and casual contacts of index cases knew the mode of transmission and related symptoms of tuberculosis properly than non-contacts. Eighty five percent answered that they expect TB can be cured completely. Regarding the stigma of TB patients, four fifths (77.5%) answered that they would avoid the patients even though the infectivity was substantially reduced by medication. Conclusion ; For effective TB control policy, Korea put its effort on public campaigning on TB. Though considerable resources were injected to public advertisement and advocacy, this result showed that mis-understanding on TB and social stigma were remained. Efficient social campaigning on TB requires further study on public understanding on TB.

Objective : To obtain the incidence rate of anxiety disorders among the active duty Korean military personnel, who visited the military hospitals from 2011 to 2013, this descriptive epidemiological study was performed. Methods : After acquiring the data for the anxiety disorders from Defense Medical Statistics Information System, the annual incidence rates were analyzed by forces, position status, and specific disease entities. Results : One thousand, nine hundred and thirteen (1,913) active duty male military personnel were diagnosed with any kinds of anxiety disorders in their first visit to the psychiatric outpatient department (OPD). The total OPD visit counts were 7,870 during the same period. Anxiety disorder, NOS was the most frequent disorder, followed by panic disorder. While the incidence rate for anxiety disorder, NOS decreased, panic disorder displayed increasing tendency. Stress-related disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder were positioned third and fourth, respectively, for the number of first visit and they both showed decreasing tendency in annual incidence rates. Social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and mixed anxiety-depressive disorder followed next. The annual incidence rates for anxiety disorders showed decreasing tendency, particularly evident in army soldiers. However, naval officers showed higher anxiety disorder incidence rate compared to those of the army and the air forces. Conclusion : Comparing to general population, panic disorder was higher while specific phobias and GAD were lower in the Korean military. It is interesting to observe higher incidence rate for anxiety disorder in naval officers and warrants further evaluation.

Objectives : We aimed to investigate the prevalence of problematic alcohol use screened with Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) by a community addiction management center and provide data on descriptive comparison with the overall prevalence investigated by the community health survey 2012-2016. Since the community health survey does not utilize a standardized test, there is a need to examine whether it accurately captures the problematic alcohol use in the community. Methods : We analyzed the 2013-2017 data of 6888 people screened by the Uijeongbu Community Addiction Management Center with AUDIT. The prevalence was compared with the overall prevalence investigated by the community health survey 2012-2016. Results : Hazardous drinking behavior (male 53.8%, female 35.4%) and suspected alcohol use disorder (male 19.6%, female 6.7%) were significantly higher in males than females and the odds ratios of males were 2.13 and 3.40, respectively. The age groups from the twenties to the fifties reported high problematic alcohol use. The results revealed that hazardous drinking and suspected alcohol use disorder rate were higher at the center screening as compared to the general population based on the community health survey conducted during the similar period. Conclusion : Young and middle-aged adult males were the identified risk group for problematic alcohol use that re-quires more public health resources for the prevention. It is hypothesized that utilization of established screening tools in the community health survey may improve the accuracy of problematic alcohol use detection in the community.
